Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nocturnal, Australia, Macropod

Quokkas are famous for their smiling faces and they're found in Australia. They're a tiny animal about the size of a house cat. They have a short flat tail, are primarily nocturnal, and can climb trees. Like kangaroos, they are considered macropods which can hop on the ground.
2. Mainly Africa, Acinonyx, Fast

When we're talking about land animals, no other animal can match the land speed of a cheetah. They've been clocked at 100 km/hr (about 60 mph) in short bursts. The cheetah is a carnivore that lives primarily in Southern Africa with a small population in Iran.

Their speed is obtained by getting all four feet off the ground at the same time. They have a light frame, powerful legs, and a tail that allows the cheetah to balance. Acinonyx is the Genus type of the cheetah.
3. Carrion, Aves, Five continents

The vulture has an incredible sense of smell and can identify decaying flesh, carrion, from great distances. They are classified as Aves, which is given to all birds. There are over twenty species of vultures worldwide and some can be found in North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
4. Omnivore, Musteloidea, Sett

The badger is one of the pound for pound fiercest animals in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. They are classified as Musteloidea, a group of carnivores that share similar skulls and teeth, but the badger also eats plants making it a rare Musteloidea which is an omnivore.

The mammal is known for its aggressive digging and can be found living underground with other badgers in a home called a sett.
5. Herbivore, Sirenian, Aquatic

The manatee is also called a sea cow. They're very gentle, slow, grazers of plants, and are not a natural predator, which are all traits similar to cows (bovines). The major difference is that manatees live exclusively in the water, process food differently, and are part of the Sirenian branch of mammals.

They are found in salt water where the temperatures exceed 60 degrees F (15.5 degrees Celsius). So you would likely see one in the Caribbean, Amazon, West Africa, and states like Florida.
6. Pack animal, Spitting, Camelidae

The alpaca are common to South America. They may get a little inferiority complex as they often mistaken for llamas or even camels. They are classified as Camelidae. An alpaca has incisors only on the bottom of their mouth and a pad on the top to mash their food, with molars at the back.

They have been known to spit at other alpacas when upset. A fun fact is that a male alpaca is called a macho and the female is called a hembra.
7. Marsupial, Australia, Backward pouch

To keep dirt out of their pouch, the Australian wombat has a backward pouch. Baby wombats are also called joeys like that of the Australian kangaroo, a fellow marsupial. The unique burrowing animal is known for their cube like poop! Wombats often live alone, primarily nocturnal, and can reach speeds of 25 miles per hour (40 kilometers per hour) in short bursts.
8. Crepuscular, Rodentia, Syrian (pet)

Hamsters were named for the German word for "hoard", as the lovable rodents are known to carry mass quantities of food in their cheeks. There are five major types of hamsters but the most common kept as pets are called Syrian (golden) or pygmy hamsters.

In the wild, the little rodent is active not only at night (nocturnal) but also during dusk/dawn making it crepuscular. Syrian and European hamsters are now rare to see in the wild due to habitat loss and could become extinct in the coming decades.
9. Leporidae, Cuniculture, Six Continents

In the modern day, there are close to thirty different rabbit species. The small energetic mammal can be found on every continent except Antarctica. They are classified under the family of Leporidae. The versatile animal has been used as human pets and even as livestock. Cuniculture is the breeding of rabbits to be used for food, fur, or scientific research.
10. Herbivore, Bovine, Swimmer

The buffalo is a large bovine that will surprise you on how athletic they are. Buffalo have been clocked at 35 miles per hour (60 km/hr) running on land and they are excellent swimmers. You will find buffalo in Africa and Asia. In North America, they are often known as bison.

They can weigh over a ton, defend themselves by forming packs, and are typically gentle animals that primarily eat grass and leafy plants.
