Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I used to be sent out in my RUMBLY CAR to fetch this from the nearest Indian restaurant before Bob gave me a recipe that works.

Answer: Lamb curry

Shameful to admit but I had never been able to produce a good home made curry. My past attempts all involved jars of curry paste, and the like, until a very good cook from FunTrivia gave me a recipe that works every time - even when I tinker with the ingredients!

I believe this proves it's not what you put into a curry that counts but how you prepare and cook it.
2. This OUT ACES everything for versatility. If we lived in a castle we would probably fill our MOAT with it!

Answer: Tomato sauce

No two tomato sauces in this house are ever quite the same and it very much depends on what it's being used for as well, but nothing is quite as versatile as the simple tomato sauce.
To use with pasta; tinned tomatoes or fresh plum tomatoes are best, with lots of garlic, fresh basil, pepper and onion; simmered for an hour or more not forgetting a good glassful of red wine.

Other dishes, such as veal or fish we use fresh ripe tomatoes (and most of the ingredients above) sautéed in olive oil or butter and a drop or more of white wine and reduce the sauce quickly cooking time around 5 minutes.
3. I have an AUNT who doesn't like meat. When she comes to stay we SORT her out with this tasty vegetarian alternative.

Answer: Nut roast

Nut roasts come in many shapes and forms and we certainly prove that here! It's good for everyone to take a break from meat. They are a great Christmas veggie option so I'm told (personally I've never given up our turkey).
Also very tasty with home made tomato sauce.
4. No smoking allowed in the kitchen so the PUFFERS STEPPED outside and missed these yellow, red, orange or green vegetable being filled.

Answer: Stuffed peppers

Peppers are great for stuffing. I'm talking about the large bell shaped Capsicum, sweet as opposed to the little hot ones called chillies.

The favourite stuffing in my household is; a mix of rice and wild rice, minced lamb, and herbs and spices but they are easy to adapt for vegetarians - use mushrooms and cheese instead of the meat. Fresh garden peas , if you have them, add a very special touch to the filling.
5. I don't have to go AFAR in my QUEST to find this French cheese but I don't want my friends to DROOL over it or the green stuff that makes this temping entrée.

Answer: Roquefort salad

I'm almost sure that at least two of my quizzes have recipes for Roquefort salad and I'll not bore the editors with yet another description - So on the quiet - green salad leaves, walnuts and the said cheese tossed in , if you want, a very light oil and vinegar dressing.
6. As you might know ROMMEL was a GENUINE Field Marshal but I wonder if he ever enjoyed this dessert that combines the tart flavour of a citrus fruit with a sweet topping, and usually a pastry base.

Answer: Lemon meringue

Lemon Meringue is an British classic - forgotten by many but remembered by us expatriates.
If you have never had a home made Lemon Meringue, then go and make one now. You will not regret it!
7. These little PLUMS do not go DING when they drop from the tree but are instead little balls of suet, flour and water that drop deliciously into any stew or casserole.

Answer: Dumplings

To my way of thinking, and my family's, why not throw a few dumplings in to any stew or casserole. They should come out light and fluffy if you make them right and a few herbs don't go amiss.
We astonished our French friends who first looked at them with suspicion!
8. When your ACNE is running AMOK there's nothing better than these tasty North African meatballs from Liz's CROFT.

Answer: Moroccan Kefta

This is a dish that my wife (Liz) makes. I tried once but it wasn't half as tasty.
If you would like her recipe - beg! Just jesting she is happy to give it to anyone.
9. The Giant said "Fie FIE fo. I wish I had a SHIP to catch the fruit of the sea".

Answer: Fish pie

We eat a fair amount of fish and there is no one definite recipe for what we call fish pie.
The favourite with the children is any white fish simmered (bones removed) and then added to a creamy white sauce, with a little parsley, hard boiled eggs and seasoning . Top the lot with mashed potato and put it in the oven. Lovely! Mushrooms and leeks are great in the sauce too.
10. Did a mouse run off with the APPLET or a RAT? Neither - we ate it!

Answer: Apple tart

The humble apple tart, pie/crumble or pudding appears to link the French with the British and both with North Americans.
I like to think that I have a recipe (adapted from a few) which is the best. Well okay the best in our household!
