Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Drop one letter from the word 'dressed' and anagram the remainder to find ritual Jewish feasts that mark the beginning of Passover (Plural).

Answer: SEDERS

The solution would have involved dropping one of the D's and anagramming the rest.

Passover is a major Jewish holiday that commemorates the Israelites escape from slavery in Egypt. The seder, which means 'order', is a structured meal of symbolic foods that leads into readings, songs and storytelling, all of which relate to the events of the Passover.
2. Drop another letter and anagram the rest to find flowering plants from the grass family Poaceae (Plural).

Answer: REEDS

The solution would have involved dropping one of the S's and anagramming the rest.

The common reed (Phragmites australis), is the original of the species named reed, but reeds don't just belong to the grass family Poaceae. They are also in the sedge family Cyperaceae, with the best known being papyrus, the family Typhaceae, which contains reed-mace and the bur-reed and, the family Restionaceae, which holds the thatching reeds.
3. Drop another letter and reverse the order of the rest to find a creature, whose female version, is the first one mentioned in the song "Do-Re-Mi".

Answer: DEER

From the word 'reeds', you needed to drop the 'S' and then reverse the word reed.

"Do-Re-Mi" is a show tune from the 1959 musical "The Sound of Music" by Rodgers and Hammerstein. In the play, the governess to the Von Trapp children, Maria, teaches the solfège of the major musical scale to the children, who are learning to sing for the first time.

The opening line of the solfège is:
"Doe: a deer, a female deer", which alludes to the first solfège syllable, do.
4. Drop another letter and reverse the order of the rest to reveal a 2010 movie starring Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman.

Answer: RED

In a similar way to the previous answer, drop one of E's from 'deer', which leaves you with 'der'. Reverse this to get 'red'.

"Red", is an acronym in the film for "Retired and Extremely Dangerous". Bruce Willis is a retired CIA black-ops agent whose peaceful life is suddenly interrupted by a team of assassins. Disposing of them he then assembles his old team in a bid to find out who wants to get rid of him. The ensemble cast also includes John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, and Mary-Louise Parker.
5. Simply drop another letter to uncover a prefix that means "again".

Answer: RE

The solution was to drop the 'D' off the end of red.

"Re" is a Latin loanword that can indicate repetition i.e. repeat or regain. It can also mean a backward movement. For example, retrace or revise. Earlier in the quiz we mentioned the solfège scale that was used to create a show tune in the 1959 musical "The Sound of Music". "Re" is the second syllable within that scale ("Do-Re-Mi").
6. Drop another letter and you're left with a letter used within the Motion Picture Association (MPA) film rating system.

Answer: R

The solution was to drop the letter 'E'.

The MPA rating system is used by the US motion picture industry to advise the suitability of films to certain audiences. Currently, within their system, the letter 'E' is not used. A film that receives an R-rating advises that it is aimed at adults over 17 years of age. It doesn't, however, mean that those under 17 are not allowed to enter a cinema to view the movie but, if they do, then they must be accompanied by an adult or an adult guardian.
7. Now you need to add a letter to locate an important Sumerian city in ancient Mesopotamia.

Answer: UR

As you can see, I think the solution to this one is pretty straightforward and doesn't really need an explanation.

The ancient city of Ur once sat where the modern day site of Tell el-Muqayyar sits in southern Iraq. It was once a coastal city, sitting on the mouth of the Euphrates River in the Persian Gulf. The river shifted course and Ur now sits well inland. The city is believed to have been significant and this was borne out by the discovery of Ur's Royal Cemetery in 1922.
8. Add another letter to the front of the previous answer and then reverse it to provide a liquor made by fermenting and then distilling sugarcane juices.

Answer: RUM

Adding 'M' to the front of Ur, gives you 'mur'. Reverse that to produce 'rum'... if only it were that easy.

Rum originated in the Caribbean during the 17th century but, today, wherever you find a major sugar growing region, there's a fair chance you will also find a rum distillery. Light rums or clear rums are generally used in cocktails but, if you like your rum either neat or on-the-rocks, your best course is either a dark or golden rum.
9. Simply add a letter to play on a musical instrument that belongs to the percussion family.

Answer: DRUM

The letter that you needed was the 'D' and it needed to be at the front of your previous answer.

The drum, also known as a membranophone, is made up of a membrane (the drumhead) stretched over a shell. To play it, you strike it, either with a percussive mallet (drumstick) or with the whole or part of the hand. A resonating sound comes out underneath.
10. Add a letter to the previous answer and then anagram that set to create a verb that means to object.

Answer: DEMUR

The letter 'E' is added to the set before being anagrammed.

Demur - if you're not sure how to pronounce it, it rhymes with 'Defer' - can also be used as a noun, meaning the act of objecting. It should not be confused with the word 'Demure' - rhymes with 'Impure' - which means reserved, modest or shy.
