Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here's the first sentence containing a card game hidden within it: "The card player was awarded a Medal of Honor." Hiding within that sentence is a card game. Figure out what it is, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: "Low Rider" band

You can find the card game in the sentence: "The card player was aWARded..."
The band War had a 1975 number one hit on the Billboard R&B singles chart with "Low Rider", a song that has been used in countless movie and TV soundtracks.

The card game War is played with two players who split a 52-card deck evenly between them after it has been shuffled. Both players then simultaneously turn over the top card from their face-down deck. The player whose card is higher wins that first battle, and collects both cards and places them at the bottom of their face-down deck/pile. If both cards revealed are the same value, it is a tie, and then each player places three cards from their pile face down next to the initial two cards that were tied. They follow up with one more card from their pile and place it face up. Whichever of those two cards is the higher value is then declared the winner of all the cards in that round, which would be ten cards. But if it's another tie, the tie-breaker process is repeated.
The game is won when one player has collected all 52 cards.
2. Where is the card game hidden in this sentence? "The student asked how history would help him in school." Concealed within that sentence is a card game. Find it, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: Rhymes with kissed

Four players play Whist with partners sitting across from each other. The cards are dealt out to the players starting with the player to the dealer's left. The last dealt is the dealer's and that card is dealt face-up so all can see it (all other cards have been dealt face down to each player, and then each player collects their cards). That last card, the dealer's card is the trump card, and whatever suit it is determines the trump for that round. The game starts with the player to the left of the dealer playing a card. Players must follow suit if they can, but if they have no cards in the suit, they may play any card from their hand-either a trump card or a card from another suit. The hand, or trick, is won by the highest trump card played in the trick, or if no trump was played, the highest card of the suit that was led wins. The winner of that trick leads the next card.
After all 13 tricks have been played, the hand is scored. The team that wins the majority of tricks scores points:
Each trick won over six counts as one point, so for example, if that team won 8 tricks, they would score 2 points. The first team to reach the agreed-upon total score wins the game.
3. And here's the sentence: "The recipe calls for two tablespoonsful of a pig or donkey." Somewhere within that sentence is a card game. Spot which card game, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: Like ladles

You can find the card game in the sentence: "The recipe calls for two tableSPOONSful..."

The fast-paced card game Spoons is also known as Pig or Tongue, and is played with three or more players and a normal 52-card deck. This card game is unusual in that you also use prop spoons, one less than the total number of players, and the spoons are placed in a cluster in the center of the table. Four cards are dealt to each player, with the remaining deck placed next to the dealer.
The dealer picks up the top card from the deck, and decides whether to keep it or pass it, the goal being to collect four-of-a-kind. If the dealer keeps the card, they must discard one card from their hand, placing it face-down to the player on their right. If the dealer does not want the card, they pass it face-down to the player on their right. The next player does the same: take the card passed to them, keep or discard, and pass right.
This process continues around the circle constantly, no turns, just constant passing. When a player eventually gets 4 of a kind, they speedily grab a spoon. And when that happens, everyone else must grab a spoon too, as fast as possible. One person will be left without a spoon.

The loser of the round is assigned a letter, the first letter being an "S". ("S" from the word SPOONS). The play continues round after round, and each time a player loses, they get the next letter (S, then P, then O, etc.).
The first player to spell out "S-P-O-O-N-S" is eliminated. The last player remaining wins the game.
4. Here is the next sentence: "Whatever you're thinking of is hard to figure out from your expression." Somewhere within that sentence is a card game. Find where that card game is, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: This card game has an animal in its name.

You can find the card game in the sentence: "Whatever you're thinkinG OF IS Hard ..."

The goal of the game Go Fish is to collect the most "books", that is, sets of four cards of the same value. Two to six players play (though more than two is better) with a standard 52-card deck. The dealer gives 7 cards to each player if 2-3 players, or 5 cards each to 4 or more players. The remaining cards are placed face down in a draw pile in the center.

The player to the left of the dealer goes first, and asks any other player he chooses if they have a certain card (e.g. Do you have any 8s?); but the player asking must already have at least one card of the kind he's asking for. If the player that was asked, does have such a card he must hand over all the cards he has of that rank. Since the asker succeeded in finding a player who had the card he asked, for then he gets to ask another player if they have a certain card. If the asked player does not have the card asked for, he says, "Go Fish!", and then the player who asked must draw the top card from the face-down pile. If the card he draws happens to be the same rank he just asked for, he shows it to the group, and he gets to ask someone again if they have a certain card. Otherwise, his turn ends and the next player asks someone if they have a certain card.
At any time a player collects all four cards of the same rank he has a "book", he shows the book to the group and places the foursome face-down on the table in front of him.

The game ends when all 13 books have been made, or when a player runs out of cards. The player with the most books is the winner.
5. In this sentence, can you find a card game hidden within? "When the baker built his baby's crib, bagels decorated the side." Somewhere within that sentence is a card game. Scan the sentence to find it, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: Anagram of "Big Brace"

You can find the card game in the sentence: "When the baker built his baby's CRIB, BAGEls...."

Cribbage is played with a 52-card deck for two players (though it can be adapted for 3 or 4), and uses a wooden board with 120 holes and pegs to keep score. The goal is to be the first player to score 121 points by combining cards into certain combinations. At the start, each player is dealt 6 cards, and chooses 2 cards to discard face-down into a discard pile called "the crib". The crib belongs to the dealer and will be scored later. Each player now has 4 cards, and the crib also has 4 cards.

The non-dealer takes the remaining deck and cuts the cards into two piles. The dealer then turns up the top card of the pile that had been the bottom half of the deck that was just cut. That top card is now the Starter Card. If the Starter Card is a Jack, the dealer immediately scores 2 points.

Players take turns laying down one card at a time, announcing the running total of the played cards value. So, if the first player lays a 7 and says "seven", and then the next player lays a 10 he would say "seventeen", etc.
Card Values: Jacks, Queens, Kings = 10; Aces = 1; All other cards = their face value.

Each player's cards are face up on the table in front of that player, so that the hands can be seen and analyzed and gathered and scored. To score, players play cards to make specific combinations of card total values:
If you play a card that makes the total exactly 15, you score 2 points, or if you play a card that makes the total exactly 31, you score 2 points. The count then resets to zero, and play continues.
If you play a card that is the same value the card just played by your opponent, you score 2 points for a pair.
If a third card of the same value is again played immediately after (three of the same card played in a row) the player of the third card scores 6 points. And if a fourth consecutive card of the same value is played, the player scores 12 points.

If a player cannot play a card without exceeding 31, they say "Go," and the opponent scores 1 point, and thus moves his peg one more space along the board as players have been doing each time they score points.

You can also score points by playing a card that forms a sequence of three or more consecutive cards, for example 3, 4, 5 or Jack, Queen, King, etc. The points awards are equal to the number of cards (e.g., 2-3-4, J-Q-K), you score points equal to the length of the run. And important to note that the "run" does not have to be in sequential order as in 8, 9, 10, Jack; in other words don't have to be laid down in value order-so if you laid down a 10, then 8, then Jack, and then the 9 you get 4 points for a 4-card run of a sequence (8,9,10, Jack).

After a round has completed the hand counting is done affording other scoring opportunities such as a flush whereby four cards of the same suit in the players hand scores 4 points, or if the starter card in the crib is also the same suit, the players scores 5 points.
6. In this sentence, can you find a card game? "The virgin rum my Dad mixed was appropriate for us underage kids." Somewhere within that sentence is a card game. Scan it, find it, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: Two alcohol references

You can find the card game in the sentence: "The virGIN RUM MY Dad mixed..."

A two-player game using a standard 52-card deck, each player is dealt 10 cards. The next card is placed face-up to start the discard pile. The remaining cards are placed face-down in the stock pile. The goal is to be the first to reach the end-of-game agreed upon score (usually 100 or 250), by forming your 10-card hand into various sets (at least three cards of the same rank), or runs (consecutive sequences of cards in the same suit.)

Players take turns drawing either the top card from the face-down stock pile, or the face-up discard pile. Then they discard one of the cards from their hand onto the discard pile.

You can end a round by calling out "Knock" if either all the cards in your hand are in sets and/or runs, or if the total value of your unmatched cards (called deadwood) is 10 points or less. All players then lay their cards on the table, and they can add any of their unmatched cards onto the knocker's sets and runs if they fit in appropriately. Once all players have laid out their sets and runs, the point values of their deadwood is counted. If the Knocker has a lower deadwood total than the opponent, he scores the difference between the two totals. If the Opponent has an equal or lower total, then the opponent scores the difference, plus a 25-point bonus.
7. Can you find the card game in this sentence? "Harmonicas in operas are about as common as gaming chips in cookies." Concealed within that sentence is a card game. Which clue applies to that card game?

Answer: Bellagio

You can find the card game in the sentence: "HarmoniCAS IN Operas..."

Casino can be played with 2 to 4 players with a standard deck, the goal being to score more points than your opponent by capturing cards from a certain layout of the cards on a table. The dealer deals two cards face-down to the opponent, and two cards face-up in the center of the table, and two cards to himself, and then repeats this process so that each player ends up with 4 cards, and there are 4 face-up cards on the table. The remaining deck is placed face-down as a stock pile.

The card values are as such: Number Cards (2-10) are their own face value.
Jacks, Queens, and Kings have no numerical value, and they can only be captured by a card of the same rank-that is, a Jack can only capture another Jack, for instance.
Aces can be worth 1 point or 14 points, depending on the capture being made.

When it's a player's turn, they capture one or more cards from the table layout by taking two cards that add up to a card value in his hand. For instance, if he has an 8, he can capture a 5 and a 3 from the table layout, or a 6 and 2, or a 3, a 4 and an Ace, etc.
If a player can't capture any cards, or perhaps opts not to, he must then add a card from his hand to the face-up cards laid out on the table, thus adding to the available cards for the opponent to capture.
After a player's turn, the player draws a new card from the stock pile to return his hand of 4 cards.
If you capture all the cards on the table in one move, you've made a "sweep", which is worth 1 extra point at the end of the round.
The game is typically over when one player reaches a predetermined total score, usually 21 points.
8. In this sentence, can you find the card game that is hiding? "They went stir crazy eight Sundays in a row without an NFL game to watch." Your task here is to find where a card game is hiding, and then see which of the clues applies.

Answer: Two words

Crazy Eights is one of those card games in which the goal is to get rid of all your cards. Players are dealt 5 cards each, and the rest of the deck forms a face-down pile from which cards will be drawn. The top card of that pile is flipped over, revealed and starts off the discard card pile. Players take turns discarding a card from their hand if it matched the discard pile card's suit or rank. If a player doesn't have a card that matches either criterion he must draw from the draw pile until he does draw a card that he can discard. Eights are wild, and when a player discards one, he gets to choose any suit for the next player to play. The game is over when a player has gotten rid of all the cards in his hand.
9. Here is the next sentence that has a card game hidden within it: "The Hungry Hippo, Kermit the Frog, and the Lorax vied for Newberry Awards." A card game is in that sentence. Find where, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

There are so many variations of poker but the most popular version is Texas Hold'em. In poker the goal is to win the pot by either having the best five-card hand at the end of the final betting round, or being the last player remaining if all the other players fold. The order of poker hands is as follows from best to worst:
Royal Flush: The Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10 all of the same suit
Straight Flush: Any other five consecutive cards all of the same suit
Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same value, or rank
Full House: Three of a kind, and one pair.
Flush: Five cards all of the same suit
Straight: Any five consecutive cards of mixed suits
Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same value, or rank
Two Pairs: Two pairs of different ranked cards
One Pair: One pair of cards with the same rank.
High Card: No one has any of the hands above, so whoever has the highest ranked card in their hand wins.
10. Here is the last sentence: "While looking in a trashcan a stagnant water puddle indicates the Sanitation Department hasn't collected it yet." A hidden card game in that sentence is what you're looking for. Then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: Three syllables

You can find the card game in the sentence: "While looking in a trashCAN A STAgnant..."

Like bridge, canasta is played with four players, with two per team, or partnership sitting across from each other, but this time, two standard decks are used and the jokers are included, making for 108 cards altogether. Each player is dealt 11 cards, and the remaining cards are placed face-down as the stock pile. The top card of that pile is turned over and set to the side, becoming the discard pile.

The goal is to form melds in your hand like in rummy, and in canasta a meld is at least three cards of the same rank that players lay face up on the table to score points. Melds can include wild cards, which in this game are jokers and twos, but there can't be more than three wild cards per meld, and there must always be at least two non-wild cards in each meld. The usual drawing of cards and discarding of cards occurs, and a meld containing at least seven cards of the same rank is called a "canasta" which earns bonus points. Other formations of melds have varying point scores. The usual goal is the first team to get to 5000 points wins.
