Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There's one bank at each end of the street.

Answer: Kate

There's one banK AT Each end of the street.

Kate is one of several variations of the name Katherine, which came into English from the Greek name Aikaterine. The latter may have been a variant of Hecate, a Greek goddess of witchcraft, magic and the moon, or else derived from 'katharos' meaning 'pure'. One well-known English award-winning movie actress whose birth name is Kate is Kate Winslet, who had the main female role in the 1997 movie 'Titanic'. An American movie actress who also used her birth name professionally was Katherine Hepburn, who won a then record number of four Best Actress Academy Awards.

A number of actresses have changed their names from one variant of Katherine to another for professional purposes. Two of them are the Australian Cate Blanchett, who was given the first name of Catherine, and the American Katie Holmes, whose original name was Kate.
2. As a musician, I take myself to many concerts.

Answer: Anita

As a musiciAN, I TAke myself to many concerts.

The name Anita is derived from the Hebrew name Hannah and was adopted into the classical Greek and Latin languages and then from there into other, more modern European languages. It appears to have come into English and into some other languages via Spanish, in which language Anita is a pet form of the name Ana. Hannah meant (and means) 'gracious' and 'compassionate' and Anita has kept essentially the same meaning, usually being translated as 'grace'. One lady with this name was Anita Roddick, the English entrepreneur who founded the Body Shop chain of shops which sell environmentally-friendly cosmetics and skincare products.

A number of ladies connected with the arts have been given Anita as their first or second name, for instance the American writer Anita Loos, whose full name was Corinne Anita Loos and who was an actress as well as a writer of screenplays and novels. Anita Ekberg, originally Kerstin Anita Marianne Ekberg, was born in Sweden and began her career as a model before becoming an international actress. Also, the Englishwoman Anita Dobson had some success as a singer but her main career has been as an actress. She later became known as Anita, Lady May because her husband Brian May, a member of the band Queen, has received a knighthood from King Charles III.
3. The thugs attacked us but our hero sent them packing straight away.

Answer: Rose

The thugs attacked us but our heRO SEnt them packing straight away.

There are two explanations as to how Rose became a given name and the most usual is that it originated in the Latin name Rosa, meaning the 'rose flower', which is believed to have links to the ancient Greek word 'rhódon', meaning 'rose'. From Latin, Rosa was adopted into Old English as 'rōse', which had become 'rose' by the late Middle Ages, when the word started to be used as a first name. The less usual explanation is that the word was first used as a surname derived from the Germanic 'Hrodheid' or 'Hrodohaidis' which evolved into the English word via the Norman French 'Roese' and 'Rohese'.

Well-known ladies with the first name Rose include Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, who was first called Rose Fitzgerald then added the last name Kennedy when she married Joseph Kennedy. Their nine children included President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, presidential candidate Robert Francis Kennedy and Senator Edward Kennedy. The economist originally named Rose Director was born in the Ukraine but grew up in the USA and, similarly to Rose Kennedy, added her husband's last name when she married the economist and Nobel prize winner Milton Friedman, so becoming Rose Director Friedman. The Australian actress Rose Byrne, whose full name is Mary Rose Byrne, chose to use her middle name professionally and first acted in movies and television shows in Australia before moving to the USA to continue her career.
4. The swimming race is starting soon. Let's watch it.

Answer: Grace

The swimminG RACE is starting soon. Let's watch it.

The name Grace is derived from the Latin word 'gratia', which means 'goodness' and 'blessing'. The word was adopted into Old French as the first name Grace, where it meant the slightly different 'pleasantness', and thence into English, where the name can also mean 'God's grace' and as such was popular with Puritans in the UK and America. One famous English lady with the first name Grace was a lighthouse keeper's daughter named Grace Darling, who went out in a rowboat with her father in weather too bad for a lifeboat to be launched and saved several people from a shipwrecked boat.

Among American entertainers named Grace was the award-winning movie actress Grace Kelly, who retired from acting when she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco and so became a Princess. Although born in Jamaica, Grace Jones moved to the USA when she was young and also acted in movies for a while but has concentrated mainly on singing. Grace Slick, whose original name was Grace Barnett Wing, was a vocalist and keyboardist for many years, notably with the group Jefferson Airplane, but later concentrated on painting and drawing.
5. No woman or man can hold their breath for thirty minutes.

Answer: Norma

No womaN OR MAn can hold their breath for thirty minutes.

The explanation as to how the name Norma originated considered the more likely is that the word was derived from a similar ancient Latin word meaning 'rule' or 'norm'. An early thirteenth century document using Norma as an English name has been found but the modern name may have been (re)created by the French poet and playwright Alexandre Soumet for his early nineteenth-century play 'Norma, ou L'infanticide'. This play was adapted by librettist Felice Romani for Vincenzo Bellini's then well-known 1831 opera 'Norma' and it is believed the name then became fairly popular. An alternative suggestion is that the name came into English from Old Germanic where it may have meant the female equivalent of 'northman'.

A very famous American lady who was first a model and then an actress was known professionally as Marilyn Monroe but her original name was Norma Jean Mortenson. In contrast, a famous Canadian-American actress, Edith Norma Shearer, kept most of her own name and was known professionally as Norma Shearer. Among American singers who kept their original first and last names are Norma Tanega, who had a long career as a singer, songwriter and musician, and Norma Wright, who was lead vocalist of the band Chic for a time and continued to sing as part of other groups and as a backing singer. From a different field of achievement, the successful Irish Fianna Fáil politician Norma Foley became Minister for Education in 2020.
6. Mountains like Aconcagua and Annapurna are very difficult to climb.

Answer: Anna

Mountains like Aconcagua and ANNApurna are very difficult to climb.

The name Anna, like related names such as Anne and Ann, is believed to have been derived from the Latin and Hebrew name Hannah, which was linked to the Greek name Avva, and all the names have the similar meanings of 'gracious', 'compassionate' and/or 'favour'. From Latin the name came down into other languages and by the Middle Ages had become, for instance, the French Anne and the English Anna and Ann. It has been suggested that the use of the Greek and Hebrew forms of the name in the Bible's New Testament for the mother of the Virgin Mary and for a prophetess who recognised that Jesus was the Messiah influenced its adoption into other languages.

In modern times a number of famous ladies in different fields of achievement have/have had the first name of Anna. One of these was the early twentieth century Russian prima ballerina Anna Pavlova, who was most famous for her solo dance 'The Dying Swan'. A more recent well-known Russian is Anna Kournikova, a former tennis player who became a model and has appeared on television entertainment shows. An English lady who was also well known for having appeared on television, but in more serious roles, is Anna Ford, who used to be a newsreader and presenter of current affairs programmes for British televison channels, as well as a journalist, until she retired.
7. With the title of Sultan, I am ruler of Brunei.

Answer: Tania

With the title of SulTAN, I Am ruler of Brunei.

The origin of the name Tania and its alternative spelling of Tanya is not agreed on but it seems likely to have originated as the Latin name Tatiana, which was the female form of Tatitnus or Tatius, whose meaning is no longer known. It has also been speculated that it may be derived from/influenced by the name of Shakespeare's fairy queen, Titania, in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', which he might in turn have adapted from Titanes, the collective name of the Titans' daughters in Greek mythology. The Latin name of Tatiana is also a first name in Russian, in which language it means 'queen', and Tania is used as a nickname for people with this name.

Several popular entertainers share the first name Tania and among them is the Australian musician Tania Davis, who is a violinist and long-term member of the otherwise English string quartet band Bond. Others with the name include the American Tania Raymonde, whose full name is Tania Raymonde Helen Katz, a mainly television but also movie actress and Tania Roxborogh, who is a writer of fiction and non-fiction from New Zealand. Two people who spell their first names with a 'y' are Tanya Clarke, an American actress who has appeared in movies, television programmes and stage plays, and the American country singer Tanya Tucker who has been singing professionally for several decades.
8. If bad things occur in childhood it can mar you for life.

Answer: Mary

If bad things occur in childhood it can MAR You for life.

The name Mary and its equivalents have been used in a number of countries for a long time. It is not known where the name began but the early Egyptian word 'mer', meaning 'love' and 'beloved', is one possibility. Another possibility is Hebrew word 'מרים', pronounced Miryam, which is believed to have come from the older Hebrew 'mry', meaning 'bitter' or 'rebellious'. Llike 'מרים', the Greek form of 'mry', which translates as Maria or Maryam, was used in the Bible's New Testament. From Greek the name Maria is believed to have been adopted into Latin and from there into other European languages, being anglicised as Mary in English-speaking countries.

The name was shared by seven women in the Bible, with the mother of Jesus being the most well-known. Mary of Magdala, or Mary Magdalene, was among the people who followed Jesus as he travelled around the countryside and Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus sat at Jesus' feet when he visited their family. The name has been popular over the centuries and famous ladies with the name include the sixteenth-century Tudor queen Mary I and the nineteenth-century writer and author of 'Frankenstein' (1818) Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. More recent holders of the name include two ladies who have appeared in television series of different kinds. The American actress Mary Tyler Moore starred and co-starred in several sitcoms while the English cook Mary Berry has appeared on and hosted cookery shows for several decades, as well as writing many cookery books.
9. Unwell elephants will complain.

Answer: Elle

UnwELL Elephants will complain.

There seem to be two theories about the origin of the name Elle and its variations Ellie and Ella. The predominant one believes it to have begun as the ancient Greek name Helene neaning 'light', 'sun ray' or 'torch'. The name then came down into different European languages, for instance into French and thence into English as Elle and into these and some other languages as the related names Eleanor and Elaine. The less popular theory is that Elle has come into modern languages from the ancient Latin 'olle' through the more modern Latin 'ille' or its plural 'illae', all of them words meaning 'that'.

The Australian Elle MacPherson was first called Eleanor Nancy Gow but adopted her stepfather's surname of MacPherson and uses a variation of her first name professionally. She became famous as a model then started her own companies and has also acted in several movies and hosted television programmes. Also using a variation of her first name is the American journalist, model and 2021 Miss Kentucky and Miss America, Elle Smith, who was originally named Ellen Elizabeth Smith. In contrast, the American singer, songwriter, musician and actress Elle Schneider uses her second name professionally and was originally named Tanner Elle Schneider. A writer who has kept her original first name is Elle Kennedy, an award-winning Canadian author of romantic suspense and contemporary romance books intended mainly for young adults.
10. They always do well in dancing competitions.

Answer: Linda

They always do welL IN DAncing competitions.

The name Linda is noted as likely to have originated in the Proto-Germanic word 'linþaz' meaning 'gentle', 'soft' and 'flexible'. This became the Old High German name Linde and also the Old English 'līþe' meaning 'mild' and 'pliable', which then evolved into the modern name Linda. The German writer Jean Paul used the name Linda for a main character in his four-volume novel Titan (1800-1803), and it then became popular in German-speaking countries. However, it is not known whether this influenced the name's popularity in England. It has also been speculated that the Spanish and Portuguese word 'linda' meaning 'beautiful' or 'pretty' may have increased the name's popularity but again this is not known for certain.

A number of well-known American actresses share the first name of Linda and among them is Linda Hamilton who has appeared in a number of television programmes and movies, most notably playing the character Sarah Connor in the 'Terminator' movies. Linda Gray has also had many roles in movies, stage plays and television shows while Linda Evans, who was originally named Linda Evenstad, had roles in a number of popular television series over the years before she retired. Other well-known ladies include Linda Ronstadt, a prolific award-winning American singer and songwriter, and the Canadian model Linda Evangelista, who was regarded as one of the 'supermodels' of the late 1980s and the 1990s.
