Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Add a 4-letter verb meaning to heal (or alternatively to preserve) to either pro or con, and find a verb meaning to acquire.

Answer: procure

Procure originates from both the old French 'procurer', meaning to "care for, manage", as well as the Latin word 'procurare' with the prefix pro ("on behalf of") plus curare ("to care for"). It originally meant "to bring about" or "manage," but has evolved to mean to obtain something through effort.

Many companies have a Procurement Department, which would oversee purchasing on behalf of the company.
2. Add an 8-letter word meaning a model or a pre-set format to either pro or con to find a verb meaning to think thoughtfully, or plan upon.

Answer: contemplate

Although 'contemplate' has the prefix con, which usually means 'against', in this instance the Latin root is from 'com', meaning intensive, combined with 'templum', a consecrated space. Etymology dictionaries show the verb contemplate appearing from 1590 onwards.
3. Add a 6-letter word meaning to write (or in ancient terms a word used to describe a professional writer) to pro or con to find a word meaning 'to ban, or condemn'.

Answer: proscribe

It's interesting that the prefix 'pro', usually having a positive context as in 'for' or 'in support of', is in this context a negative meaning. The word derives from the Latin 'proscribere' meaning to publish in writing, and historically refers to the practice in Roman times of publishing lists of outlaws or people to be punished.
4. Add a 3-letter word meaning a mongrel dog to either pro or con to find a word meaning 'to agree'.

Answer: concur

In this instance the prefix 'con' derives from the Latin 'com' meaning "together". Combined with the Latin 'currere' meaning "to run", makes a concurrence, or agreement.
5. Add a 4-letter word meaning join together or merge, to either pro or con to make a word meaning to muddle or make unclear.

Answer: confuse

The original meaning of confuse derives from the idea of mixing ideas together, causing a loss of clarity. The word originates from the Latin verb confundere, meaning to pour together or mingle. Confound, with a similar meaning, shares the etymology.
6. Add a 5-letter word meaning 'discovered' to either pro or con to make a word meaning intellectually deep and meaningful.

Answer: profound

Profundus, the original word in Latin, means deep or bottomless, forming from the prefix 'pro' ("forward") and 'fundus', meaning bottom. Fundus is also the same root of the word 'foundation'. Oringally with the literal meaning of deep, a long way down, the word has evolved to mean intellectually deep. I can't say many of my thoughts are particularly profound though!
7. What common 4-letter word meaning a document, storage, or a metal smoothing tool can be added to pro or con to make a word meaning an outline or contour, a biographical sketch or visibility?

Answer: profile

The original meaning of profile, from the Latin pro + filo ("thread") meant an outline drawing of a face. However from the 18th century onwards the meaning broadened to encompass the concept of a written sketch or biographical outline of a person's life. That reminds me, I haven't updated my FunTrivia profile in a while...
8. What 3-letter word meaning to worry or annoy can be added to pro or con to make a word meaning an outwardly bulging shape or surface?

Answer: convex

Convex derives from the Latin con + 'vehere' ("to carry") and probably was used to describe how roofs arched together. The opposite word concave implies a hollowed out shape. I was always 'vexed' in school physics lessons, never able to remember which shape of lens was which!
9. What 6-letter word meaning sight or an image adds to either pro or con to make a word meaning the act of supplying, or a condition or clause in a legal document?

Answer: provision

I was always curious why the combination of pro and vision would come to mean supply, especially of food. But the meaning evolved from the sense of 'foreseeing the need for something'. That explains also the legal sense of the word as in foreseeing and planning for a circumstance.
10. What 4-letter word meaning a type, or kind, or to arrange can be added to pro or con to make a word meaning to associate with (in verb form) or a royal partner or spouse?

Answer: consort

Con, which we have learnt derives from the Latin prefix 'com' meaning together, combines with 'sors' meaning "lot or share", hence the meaning of someone sharing the same fate or destiny, so a companion or partner.
