Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rebus: Combine the answers to the puzzle below to form a sea creature. Eight legged + cat

Answer: Octopus

The "pus" in the word octopus has etymologically no relation with any cats. It's just the Latin word for "foot", so an octopus has literally "eight feet". An octopus has three hearts.
2. Rebus: Try to figure out the next sea related word from the synonyms used to describe it. Tear + current

Answer: Riptide

Riptide is the ancient and no longer accurate word for rip current, a strong current towards sea near the shore. When waves reach the beach, the water typically travels parallel to the shore until it finds a narrow opening to flow back into the sea.
3. Hidden Words: Hidden in the sentence below is a patch of land you may spot in the middle of the sea. "'Tis land I see!" exclaimed the ship captain.

Answer: Island

...tIS LAND...

The word island may derive from the Latin "insula", some place separated from the rest (cf. "isolation"). French, German and Italian translations ("île" in French and "isola" in Italian, "Insel" in German) point this way.

Other sources cite the Old Norse "ey" for island, which became then "ieg" in Old English. In Dutch the word "eiland" would also come from this Old Norse word.
4. In Other Words: Try to figure out the marine creature from the synonyms used to describe it. Ocean steed

Answer: Seahorse

Seahorses are very recognisable fish found in temperate or tropical climate zones, especially near atoll shores. Contrary to most animals, the male seahorse carries the eggs.
5. Wordwise: Solve this rebus type of wordplay to figure out the name of a sailing vessel. SCHO ER

Answer: Schooner

SCHO on ER

A schooner is a type of sailing ship. It has at least two masts, with the foremast being equal in size (or sometimes a bit less tall) to the rear mast.
The ship type was first used in the late sixteenth century.
6. Rebus: Try to figure out the next sea related word from the synonyms used to describe it. Opposite of dark + home

Answer: Lighthouse

A lighthouse is a tower that emits light signals to guide ships to safety. The most famous historic lighthouse was that of Alexandria, one of the seven World Wonders in Antiquity.
7. Cryptic: Solve this cryptic clue to reveal another sea creature. Crazy aunt got seasick on the cruise.

Answer: Tuna

Tuna are predator fish. Bluefin tuna can reach a length up to 4.6 meters and a weight up to 684 kilos. Yellowfin tuna are usually a bit smaller.

Crazy indicates that the word is hidden in scrambled form in the sentence.
8. Fractured words: Say the words out loud and a person engaged in a sea related activity should spring to mind. Sir Fur

Answer: Surfer

Surfing is a water related sport where participants use equipment known as surfboards to ride over waves heading towards the shore. Famous surfing locations include beaches in Sydney, Australia; the cape of South Africa; and Hawaii and California in the USA.
9. Cryptic: Solve this cryptic clue to reveal a sea related word. This fun sea connected place sounds like a tree. (Remember the answer is the sea related word not the tree)

Answer: Beach

A beach is the shoreline along an ocean or sea composed of loose particles of sand or pebbles. Beech, on the other hand, is a type of deciduous tree found in the temperate regions of the world.
10. Add a letter: Add a letter to form a place where ships may dock. H + a shady place with trees

Answer: Harbour

A harbour (harbor in American spelling) is a safe place for ships to dock in times of stormy weather. Some coastal areas have natural harbours which make them convenient locations for ports to be built.
