1. Benicio del Toro

Benicio del Toro was born on February 19, 1967, in San German, Puerto Rico. He lived in Puerto Rico until he was nine years and after his mother's death, the family moved to Philadelphia. Del Toro is an accomplished actor with film credits including "Sicario" (2015), "One Battle After Another" (2025), and "Traffic" (2000) . For his role in the latter, Benicio played a police officer in the Steven Soderburgh's 2000 thriller and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
2. Daddy Yankee

Daddy Yankee's real name is Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez. He was born in Puerto Rico's capital, San Juan, and his dad was a Salsa percussionist. Daddy Yankee has been nicknamed the "King Of Reggaeton" by his peers. Daddy Yankee is best known for his hit "Gasolina" in 2004, and his collaborations with artists including Marc Anthony, Luis Miguel, J Balvin, and Bad Bunny.

In 2022, Daddy Yankee retired from singing secular songs and returned in 2025 with a Christian based single, "Sonriele".
3. Roberto Clemente

If you asked for the greatest athlete to come from Puerto Rico, you would receive a lot of votes for Major League Baseball legend, Roberto Clemente. He was born on August 18, 1934, in San Anton, and died tragically in 1972 after a plane crash near Puerto Rico. Roberto spent his entire major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and ended his Hall of Fame career with exactly 3,000 hits. Nicknamed The Great One, Clemente had aspirations of running track in the Olympics for Puerto Rico, but by the age of 18 major league baseball scouts saw his potential, and he signed a professional baseball contract and moved to the United States.
4. Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin was born on Christmas Eve in 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His fascinating music career began when he was young, singing American songs and pop hits by the boy band, Menudo. Then he auditioned for Menudo in 1977 and was rejected twice before becoming a member of the boy band in 1984.

He left the group when he turned 16, and moved to the U.S. after turning 18. Ricky Martin's solo music career is so impressive, he's been nicknamed The King of Latin Pop. Ricky has sold over 70 million records worldwide.
5. Jose Ferrer

Here's a trivia question for you, "Who was the first Hispanic actor to win an Academy Award?" Jose Ferrer won the Oscar for his starring role in "Cyrano de Bergerac" (1950). He also won a Tony Award two years earlier for the stage production of the same role.

After winning the award, Ferrer donated his Academy Award to the University of Puerto Rico to inspire other Hispanic actors. Ferrer was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, but moved to New York City at the age of two. He learned five languages and graduated from Princeton with a degree in architecture.

While at Princeton, he acted in a play with James Stewart, and pursued an acting career in 1934. Ferrer appeared in dozens of films including "Moulin Rouge" in 1952 and "Lawrence of Arabia" in 1962.
6. Juan Antonio Rodriguez

Juan Antonio Rodriguez may not sound immediately familiar, but Chi Chi Rodriguez is a Hall of Fame professional golfer who was born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Chi Chi was one of the first Hispanic golfers to make the PGA and he learned how to golf in his native country by creating homemade golf clubs out of sticks and practicing with tin cans. Rodriguez was the first Puerto Rican golfer inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

He was known for his stylish dress on the links and his famous matador sword swing after making a long putt.
7. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio is better known as Bad Bunny. In 2026, the international music superstar played the halftime of the Super Bowl in the United States. In 1994, Benito was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. While growing up in Puerto Rico, he sang in the church choir, and was an avid music listener.

He took on the nickname "Bad Bunny" after a costume he had to wear in a stage production. Bad Bunny's music legacy is vast. In 2020 and 2021, he was the most streamed artist in the world on Spotify each year.
8. Ivy Queen

Martha Ivelisse Pesante Rodríguez is the birth name for Puerto Rican born artist, Ivy Queen. She was born on March 4, 1972, in Anasco. Nicknamed The Diva" and "The Queen of Reggaeton, Ivy began her career as the only female in a Puerto Rican group known as the Noise. Together, she helped in the pioneering of the new music genre, reggaeton, which combined Latin rhythms, reggae, and hip hop music.
9. Rita Moreno

Rosa Dolores Alverío Marcano was the birth name for Rita Moreno. She was born in 1931 in Humacao, Puerto Rico. At the age of five, Rita and her mother moved to New York City. Her legacy is wide reaching. She is best known for her acting achievements including winning the EGOT for her Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards.

The Emmy was for lead actress in "The Rockford Files" (1978). Her Oscar was for Best Supporting Actress in "West Side Story" (1962). Rita won her Grammy for Best Recording for Children for "The Electric Company Album" (1972).

Her Tony Award was earned for Best Featured Actress in a Play for "The Ritz" (1975).
10. Felix Trinidad

One of the greatest boxers of the 20th Century, Felix "Tito" Trinidad was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. He won five amateur boxing titles in Puerto Rico before turning pro. During Trinidad's career, he held titles in the welterweight, light middleweight, and middleweight classes. His welterweight championship won in 1993 was defended with 15 title fights and he held the belt for seven years. In 2014 Trinidad became a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
11. Monica Puig

The first Puerto Rican to win a gold medal at the Olympics was female tennis player Monica Puig in 1996. Monica Puig Marchan was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As an infant, Monica and her family moved to Miami where she began her tennis training. Her Olympic gold medal in 1996 was at the Rio Games, and she beat Angelique Kerber in the finals.

After her retirement in 2022 over lingering injuries, Monica became a Spanish broadcaster for the Tennis Channel.
12. Raul Julia

Actor Raul Julia was born Raul Rafael Julia y Arcelay in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1940. He only lived to be 54 years old, but left a legacy of memorable acting performances. Most recognize him as Gomez Addams in "The Addams Family" but his film roles include "Tempest" in 1982 and "Kiss Of The Spider Woman" in 1985.

He had learned to speak English while attending school in Puerto Rico and loved performing in Shakespearean plays. His Broadway career included roles in "Othello" and "Taming Of The Shrew".
