5. Though built to transport coal, this railway was the inspiration for roller coasters in the U.S. Which state did tourists come to in order to ride the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway?

Answer: Pennsylvania

The railway began transporting passengers as early as 1829, but at first there was only one track and the 18 mile round trip took about 4-1/2 hours. When a separate "up track" was added, the round trip was reduced to about 80 minutes. The last leg of the trip was the gravity descent from Summit Hill Depot to Mauch Chunk. Once on the 2-1/2 mile straightaway the speed would be about 50 miles per hour.

The railway declined during the Depression and was sold for scrap.

8. Which of these video game characters is a gecko?

Answer: Gex

A wise-cracking character with all the comedic appeal of a 1990s observational comic, "Gex" appeared in a small handful of games developed by Crystal Dynamics (later owned by Eidos and Square-Enix) in the late 1990s. Though a modest seller as far as platformers of the N64 era went, Gex never had larger than a cult audience in his heyday, likely because many of his games featured already-dated pop culture references throughout. Players could hop into "Titanic"-themed levels, for instance, and hear Gex making jokes about Jack never letting go.
