Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The premise of the series is combat between a large segment of Marvel's most popular heroes and villains. Who is the individual that arranges this event?

Answer: Beyonder

The Beyonder was first introduced in "Secret Wars" #1 as an unseen, seemingly omnipotent being. He was so powerful that early on when Galactus-- one of Marvel's most powerful entities-- tries to challenge him, the Beyonder swats him away like a fly.
2. A major change in the Marvel Universe happened in "Secret Wars" #8, when a popular character donned a new costume. Who was the character?

Answer: Spider-Man

Spider-Man got a new black-and-white costume that went on to have a life of its own. As the alien symbiote 'Venom,' it has appeared regularly in "Spider-Man" comics.
3. A character who was traditionally an antagonist in the "X-Men" comics appears in the Secret Wars setting on the side of the heroes. Who was this?

Answer: Magneto

This is the beginning of Magneto's turn from being portrayed as a straight-up evil villain to being a remorseful vigilante, a plot point that is expounded upon in later in the X-books. Eventually, he leads the New Mutants after Professor X had to take time off to recover from injuries.
4. Early on in "Secret Wars" #1, the heroes decide who is going to be the team leader. After some discussion, who finally took on that role?

Answer: Captain America

Mr. Fantastic declines the role because his mind is elsewhere (his wife Sue is pregnant and was the only member of the Fantastic Four not transported to 'Battleworld'). Cap actually suggests Professor X, arguing that the mutant's mind-reading and telepathy would be an asset. Xavier, however, notes that his abilities also allow him to see one's heart, and that no one has more courage than Captain America. Over Wolverine's objections (because, of course), Cap is selected.
5. In "Secret War" #4, Molecule Man-- fighting on the side of the villains-- drops a literal mountain on the heroes. One hero manages to hold up the mountain to avoid it crushing everyone. Who does it?

Answer: Hulk

This scene is depicted on the cover of the issue, with the tag line, "Beneath one hundred and fifty billion tons stands the Hulk-- and he's not happy!" Fortunately, Reed Richards is able to jury-rig a device to augment Iron Man's suit enough to be able to blast a hole through the mountain so that the heroes can escape.
6. This series sees the introduction of several new characters. Two of these are created when Doctor Doom uses the available alien technology to augment two wayward humans also trapped on 'Battleworld' to become supervillains. Who were these two new villains?

Answer: Titania and Volcana

Titania (Mary MacPherran) and Volcana (Marsha Rosenberg) were ordinary humans from Denver, CO. Part of Denver was ripped from earth to form the Beyonder's 'Battleworld' and when the two women came across Doctor Doom in "Secret Wars" #3, they agreed to fight for him in exchange for gaining super powers.
7. Another new introduction to the Marvel universe appears in the shadows in "Secret Wars" #6, and makes a full appearance in the following issue. She is the second person to use this name. Who is it?

Answer: Spider-Woman

Julia Carpenter was also from the part of Denver, CO that was ripped from earth to create the Beyonder's 'Battleworld.' She had recently been injected with a mix of chemicals that gave her powers similar to Spider-Man. Later in the series, Peter Parker surmises that her black-and-white costume was the inspiration for his own new outfit that debuted in "Secret Wars" #8. Julia and her Spider-Woman origin story have no connection to the first Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew.
8. A major plot point of the series was that of a villain trying to steal the Beyonder's power. Who was this major Marvel villain?

Answer: Doctor Doom

Doom's interest in getting the Beyonder's power was seen in issue #1, and he eventually succeeded! However, in issue #12, the heroes-- and Captain America in particular-- manage to defeat Doom as the Beyonder reclaims his power.
9. The end of the series has Ben Grimm-- Thing-- remain on 'Battleworld' for a time, and another character takes his role in the Fantastic Four back on earth. Who was it?

Answer: She-Hulk

Grimm remained on 'Battleworld' because there, he could switch back to his human. Eventually, though, he returned to the Fantastic Four.
10. The impetus for the entire "Secret Wars" series came at the request of a toy manufacturer. They were already doing He-Man figures, but wanted to branch out and make action figures with a specific Marvel comic tie-in. The company's focus groups had kids viewing the words "secret" and "wars" favorably and Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter had his title. What company was this?

Answer: Mattel

Mattel was likely spurred to get into comics thanks to rival Kenner's tie-ins with DC. Hasbro was well-known for its GI Joe action figure line. Tonka was popular at the time with their GoBots action figures.
