Question 1 of 10
1. The first change happened late 2017, when the circus-themed "Old 99" was rethemed to a Michael Ende novel and the associated movie. Centering around a dark-skinned orphan boy and a railroad driver named Luke from the isle of Morrowland, which fantastic story is this? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The next ride to reopen in a revamped version was the former Universe of Energy dinosaur dark ride. It is set in a lollipop-colored backyard in the French Alsace region where the titular Madame has a menagerie of tame dinos. The region name might help you finding her last name, which is...? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. In the same building, the old Eurosat coaster was also retracked and rethemed from being a space mountain clone to a flight over a neon-colored nocturnal Paris. Its onboard soundtrack is a famous classical piece associated with the Moulin Rouge night club. Have a look at the dancers to guess which one! Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. In 2018, a major fire hit the park, destroying the "Pirates in Batavia" ride and most of the Scandinavian village. It was quickly announced that the pirates would return in an upgraded form. The new version centers on a Dutch pirate named Robbemond hunting for a magical dagger. Its name is the same as a Chinese zodiac sign with an astrological element, namely...? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The rebuilding of the Scnadinavian village offered the park an opportunity to add a small dark ride to it, located beneath street level. Called "Snorri Touren", this ride shows off the theme areas of the park's nearby water park, whose name you can guess by combining part of Europa Park's location with the name of an ocean. Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The next rebuilding project concerned the last non-European area of the park: The stereotypically African-themed Adventureland gave way to a romantic setting based around a fictional young European princess and later empress named Josefina. Which country thus greatly expanded on the park map? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The next new attraction isn't really a ride but rather a walkthrough with some climbing elements of varying difficulty. It has been built in Austria, replacing the old gemstone hall and crossing two attractions which were also refurbished in the process. Which ones? (One is visible in the picture) Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The biggest and most spectacular addition to the park was 2024's Voltron Nevera coaster with its surrounding new Croatian themed area. Its theming incorporates the Wardenclyffe Tower - in fact two copies of it. That should be enough to name the European-born inventor who plays the main role in the story: Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Another dark ride that had not aged too well over more than 40 years in spite of several smaller renovations was the Ghost Castle. In mid-2024, the refurbished ride opened with which name, evoking a famous Florentine banking family? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. For the final question I'll have to cheat a bit - while I am showing an onride, it is not from the ride I am asking about, but rather one located in the blue and gold pyramid dominating the frame. What kind of item do riders need to wear on this interactive ride/game (which prevents me from getting a useful photo)? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first change happened late 2017, when the circus-themed "Old 99" was rethemed to a Michael Ende novel and the associated movie. Centering around a dark-skinned orphan boy and a railroad driver named Luke from the isle of Morrowland, which fantastic story is this?

Answer: Jim Button

The character of Jim Button was loosely inspired by an actual 19th century teenager nicknamed Jemmy Button, who was sold as a slave for the price of a single mother of pearl button. It is now seen as controversial as it does include many stereotypical portrayals of races and personalities.

The park's rendition is based on the 2018 live action movie and mostly avoids these problems, depicting each main character of the movie once in a typical pose and surroundings.
2. The next ride to reopen in a revamped version was the former Universe of Energy dinosaur dark ride. It is set in a lollipop-colored backyard in the French Alsace region where the titular Madame has a menagerie of tame dinos. The region name might help you finding her last name, which is...?

Answer: Freudenreich

Madame Freudenreich's Curiosités, as the ride is called in full, is a bright, cheerful, albeit kitschy version of the old, dark dinosaur ride. It is set in the French Alsace region, which borders Germany and is just a few kilometers from the park. Many Alsatians still speak a German dialect, although the region has now been part of France for over a century.

The main dinosaurs used in the ride are exactly the same as in the old version, even down to keeping their positions. They have however been repainted and repaired - one of the reasons the old version of the ride was so dark was that the animatronics and decors were very cheap!

Due to this, the ride has a character inconsistency. A dinosaur named Eva appears twice and is supposed to be a brontosaurus, but only her first version actually depicts one. A red and white knitted scarf around her neck covers up some of the more obvious discrepancies in anatomy.

Answer: Can Can

The new version of the coaster, now called "Eurosat Can Can Coaster" uses an almost identical track layout to the old one, only diverging in two small sections due to new building regulations. Its storyline as originally presented and still visible (but no longer told in words) revolves around an artist who has too much absinthe (a strong liquor) at Moulin Rouge and thus hallucinates the night flight over Paris in the oversaturated colors seen in the ride (using black light to always illuminate only the items just being passed by to keep the ride building as dark as possible).

The ride also offers a virtual reality version with a separate station. At first, this was based on the Luc Besson science fiction movie "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets", later replaced with one based on Andrew Lloyd Webbers "Phantom of the Opera" musical.

Answer: Fire Tiger

The hunt for the Fire Tiger, a copper-colored dagger supposed to render its owner invincible, is depicted in several scenes of the ride, with hero Robbemond surviving several close calls at the hands of his evil main rival Cortes. While mostly set in East Asia, the story actually begins with a Dutch port scene, thus keeping with the European theme of the park.

While the original Batavia ride itself was a complete loss, a few of the pirate animatronics of its first queue line scene were salvaged and reintegrated into a battle scene of the new ride, aptly seated in a small lifeboad labeled "Survivor".

Answer: Rulantica

Rulantica, combining the town name of Rust with the Atlantic, was opened in 2019 as an all-year water park. Its mascot is the depicted sixtopus (an octopus with fewer legs) Snorri. The park used the rebuild to add what is effectively a bit of an ad for the water park in a simple tracked dark ride combining animatronics and video scenes. One scene of the ride uses a gently tilting track section to create a bit of a motion simulator effect.
6. The next rebuilding project concerned the last non-European area of the park: The stereotypically African-themed Adventureland gave way to a romantic setting based around a fictional young European princess and later empress named Josefina. Which country thus greatly expanded on the park map?

Answer: Austria

Of the choices, only Austria ever had an emperor. Josefina is shown as a rather adventurous young princess who loves animals and befriends magical gnomes called Yomi. One wonders how she actually managed to combine her escapades with her Imperial duties.

The old raft ride received new boats and theming that shows Josefina and her later husband Theodor as statues, either marble or golden, while the Yomi are full-color garden gnome like characters. The ride is most beautiful at night when the many colorful lights shine over the lake.

The "African Queen" steamboat was also rethemed to Austria and became the Danube Steamer.
7. The next new attraction isn't really a ride but rather a walkthrough with some climbing elements of varying difficulty. It has been built in Austria, replacing the old gemstone hall and crossing two attractions which were also refurbished in the process. Which ones? (One is visible in the picture)

Answer: The log flume and Alpenexpress

This was another unplanned reconstruction project, once again due to a major fire. This time, the flames hit the "World of Diamonds" hall which enclosed parts of the Alpenexpress powered coaster and of the log flume. Just like the Batavia fire, everyone was safely evacuated, but the hall, the coaster track and parts of the log flume were lost. Both rides were rebuilt in their original layouts, but now without an enclosure.

Instead, an alpine landscape featuring the adventure trail was built. The trail features five optional climbing sections of varying difficulty, two of which include a slide.

It is accessible to both kids and adults although most grown-ups would have serious trouble navigating the very narrow hardest section.
8. The biggest and most spectacular addition to the park was 2024's Voltron Nevera coaster with its surrounding new Croatian themed area. Its theming incorporates the Wardenclyffe Tower - in fact two copies of it. That should be enough to name the European-born inventor who plays the main role in the story:

Answer: Nikola Tesla

The Wardenclyffe Tower was an unsuccessful experiment by Nikola Tesla, who was born 1856 in present day Croatia, although at the time his birthplace was ruled by Austria. It was meant to wirelessly transmit not only radio signals but actual electrical power. The park's fictionalization of the story goes a step further and makes it into a "Star Trek" style transporter system. Riders take the role of test subjects who are being beamed back and forth between the two towers.

The coaster starts with a near vertical launch, leading over the starting tower in a loop and then passing through it. A total of five inversions, including an inverted stall (a prolonged upside down zero-g moment) are located on the outbound section to the second tower. There, the train is rotated 180 degrees on a turntable before being launched backwards into a dead-end spike before being accelerated forward into the return section, featuring two more corkscrew inversions and the depicted 90 degree stall - a weightless moment where riders are oriented with their left side facing the ground.
9. Another dark ride that had not aged too well over more than 40 years in spite of several smaller renovations was the Ghost Castle. In mid-2024, the refurbished ride opened with which name, evoking a famous Florentine banking family?

Answer: Castello dei Medici

In its new incarnation as the Castello dei Medici, the haunted ride spins a tale around diabolic ties of one of the Medici patriarchs who needs human sacrifices to complete an evil ritual. Like most other storylines of the park, this is part of the overarching "Adventure Club of Europe", a secret society of adventurers both real and fictional.

Generally darker and more consistent in tone than the previous incarnation, the Castello still remains tame enough for children to enjoy and also retains the well-loved central ballroom scene including its iconic music in an upgraded version true to the original.
10. For the final question I'll have to cheat a bit - while I am showing an onride, it is not from the ride I am asking about, but rather one located in the blue and gold pyramid dominating the frame. What kind of item do riders need to wear on this interactive ride/game (which prevents me from getting a useful photo)?

Answer: A pair of 3D goggles

For the 50th anniversary of the park, the makers came up with the idea to make a theatrical release feature animation film featuring the park mascots Ed and Edda (which opened in July 2025 to at best mediocre critical acclaim). This film is also the basis of the "Grand Prix EDventure" attraction which uses an existing rotating theater as a basis for a shooting game using 3D projection in the same way as Disney's "Toy Story Midway Mania". Riders experience an opening sequence, eight game screens and a winner's circle finale.

Above the theater / ride, the pyramid also houses a monorail station and a restaurant called "Food Loop" where food comes to the tables on miniature roller coaster rails.
