Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Often referred to as the greatest female skater of all time, she was "The Blonde Bomber", "The Golden Girl", "The Blonde Amazon", or simply "The Queen of Roller Derby". She is best known for her time with the San Francisco Bay Bombers and Midwest Pioneers, was named to 19 consecutive All-Star teams, was the highest paid female athlete of the 1960s and 1970s. She was married to fellow skater Nick Scopas. Who is she?

Answer: Joan Weston

Joan was on an episode of "I've Got A Secret" and conflicting reports result from her appearance. While published obituaries and various articles state she was on "I've Got A Secret", the Internet Movie Database lists her appearance on "To Tell The Truth", an updated version of the game show.

The episode was listed as airing on Christmas Day, 1969. Reports of that episode conflict as well. Her obituaries state that nobody guessed who she was, while an article listed in "The Tennessean" dated January 18, 1970 stated that panelist Orson Bean instantly knew who she was, reasoning that "roller derby players are supposed to be so tough and she has the softest voice."
2. One of the earliest stars of the banked track, "Big Red", or simply "Red" (so named for her hair), began her career in the late 1930s, when roller derby was an endurance race on wheels. She was the National Roller Derby League San Francisco Bay Bombers first ever women's captain, and was in the inaugural class of the Roller Derby Hall of Fame in 1964. Who was "Big Red"?

Answer: Annis Jensen

For Annis, roller derby was a family affair. She was married to skater Russ Baker and her daughter Barbara Baker also skated from the late 1960s through the 1980s.
3. At first, he was "Little", then he was "King". This skater started skating in 1964 and became one of roller derby's greatest players in a career that spanned almost sixty years. He skated for and coached numerous teams including the Eastern War-Chiefs and the Nevada Hot Dice. "King" took to wearing a crown while carrying a briefcase with the Illinois Riot. Who is this "King" who is revered by all within the roller derby community?

Answer: Richard Brown

In addition to all the teams he skated with, Richard was a detective, manager of the "Philadelphia Enquirer", and a Republican convention security guard.
4. At age 16, this skater won the Jr. Men's speed skating championship, winning all four events in record time. While flat track skating doesn't always translate to the banked track, "The Rabbit" was a big success after joining the Philadelphia Warriors in 1968. Who was "The Rabbit"?

Answer: Harry Morgan

Harry skated briefly in Canada and his daughter Belinda skated with the Florida Sundogs of the World Skating League in the late '90s. Harry became a substance abuse counselor when his skating days ended.
5. A former college basketball player and marine, he was the first ever coach of the then California (later San Francisco) Bombers in 1954 and is husband and father of two Roller Derby Hall of Famers. Who was known as "Rosie" during his derby days?

Answer: Russ Baker

Russ married Annis Jensen, who gave birth to Barbara Baker, a true Hall of Fame family. Russ was never knocked down on the track, according to publicists.
6. Although she earned the nickname "The Queen of Mean", she was better known as "The Polish Ace". Skating from 1959 and 1992, her main teams were the San Francisco Bay Bombers, Philadelphia Warriors, Los Angeles Thunderbirds, and New York Bombers. She is a member of the Hall of Fame. Who was the "Polish Ace"?

Answer: Judy Sowinski

In the early 2000s, Judy and Arnold "Skip" Schoen coached the Penn Jersey She Devils. Reportedly Judy brought the same hard-nosed approach to training as she did while playing, but it was a tough love approach. Her skaters remembered her fondly.
7. "Captain America" was traded from the WSL's Nevada Hot Dice to the Florida Sundogs for Richard Brown. He also skated with the Illinois Riot and California Quakes before returning to the Hot Dice for the Season 4 finale. Who was "Captain America"?

Answer: Bill Barker

While not as flashy as other leaders such as Richard Brown, Mark D'Amato, or Sean Atkinson, Bill proved to be every bit their equal.
8. Another skater nicknamed "King", he skated with the Chicago Hawks, Philadelphia Warriors, New York Bombers and Texas Outlaws before returning to Philadelphia, where he became beloved. He was men's coach for Texas and Philadelphia. Who is this other skater who was nicknamed "King"?

Answer: Jim Trotter

While on the same team at times, it was a good thing Jim and Richard Brown weren't called King simultaneously (Richard didn't become King until later). That would have been confusing.
9. As leader of the Nevada Hot Dice women, "The Warrior Princess" was a potent combination of speed and power. She defeated Mark Weber in a match race to become the overall captain of the Hot Dice. Name "The Warrior Princess".

Answer: Shay Brown

Shay's mother was once a speed skating champion. Must be in the genes.
10. This former skater was identified by his turtleneck sweater, ski cap, and scarf. Mostly he assisted other managers (mostly Ms. Georgia Hase), and he managed a team of his own called the Maniacs. He supposedly had connections with someone in the Himalayas. Who had the nickname of "Guru"?

Answer: John Drew

Drew managed the Maniacs in a short-lived league called RollerGames. The league was unique in that it featured a figure-8 track, a "Wall of Death", and an alligator pit on the infield.
