Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many skaters were on the track at one time for each team?

Answer: 5

There were two jammers, two blockers and a pivotman for each team.
2. What was the time period in which scoring occurred?

Answer: Jam

Under International Roller Derby League rules, a Jam lasted 60 seconds or until called off by the lead jammer.
3. What were the three different positions of skaters called?

Answer: Jammer, blocker, pivotman

Jammers had striped helmets, blockers had solid-colored helmets of their team colors, and the pivotman had black helmets.
4. Only Jammers could score points?

Answer: False

Only Jammers could begin the jam, but once it began, the pivotman could then become the lead jammer and score points. One point was scored for each opposing skater lapped.
5. Could Jammers from both teams score points in the same jam?

Answer: Yes

If the Jammers from both teams lapped opposing team members at the same time, then both teams were awarded points on the same jam.
6. How did the Lead Jammer call off a jam prior to the end of time?

Answer: Hands on the hips

On the right circumstances, a jammer could lap all five opposing skaters and go around again and score before the 60 seconds were up.
7. Skaters could be sent to the penalty box, as in ice hockey, for rules infractions.

Answer: True

Penalties were for one or two mintues. A team would have to skate short-handed. If a jammer passed all skaters on the track, he would get a point for the person in the penalty box also.
8. Now about the players and teams. What was the nickname of the team usually thought of as the Yankees of Roller Derby?

Answer: Bay Area Bombers

It was usually the Bay Bombers against one of these other teams when they went on their national tour.
9. This "America's Team" actually had two teams at the same time, although from different cities. What two cities called them their own?

Answer: San Francisco and Oakland

The Bay Bombers franchise became so popular, it split in two to satisfy the fans.
10. What male and female skaters were considered the "Babe Ruths" of the Derby?

Answer: Charlie O'Connell and Joanie Weston

Charlie O and Joanie were the fan favorites by far. The others were all Derby stars also.
11. What boxing champion's son was a Derby star?

Answer: Sugar Ray Robinson

Ronnie Robinson became one of the Derby's top stars in the late 60's and early 70's and led his team to their league title.
12. What female skater was known for her wild multi-colored hair and garish make-up?

13. What skater was known as the "Bald Eagle"?

Answer: Bob Hein

Hein looked much like Yul Brenner or Patrick Stewart with his shaved head.
14. Who was considered Roller Derby's perenniel "bad boy"?

Answer: Bob Woodberry

With his large unruly head of hair, Woodberry looked very much like a tall, skinny Don King.
15. There was once an actual movie made about the Roller Derby.

Answer: True

Although "Rollergame" used some facets of the Derby, only one was about the real Derby and was called, appropriately enough, "Derby".
It followed the life of a real skater as he tried to make it into the "big leagues" and featured several of the real Derby stars.
