"Arthur" Season 19 Trivia Quiz

Not only did this show get a 19th season, but the quality remained high. Some of my favorite episodes are in this season. A few of my favorite seldom-seen characters (Carl, Tenzin, Lydia, Maria) become major characters in a season 19 episode.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Brain's Brain", what kind of creature is the tour guide?

Answer: Czech bat

"Brain's Brain" takes place on Easter. He hosts an Easter egg hunt. He has a reputation for being the best egg-hider in Elwood City. Emily, D.W., Bud, and Tibbles attend this egg hunt. Bud claims to be the best egg-finder in the world. D.W. and Bud make a bet regarding who finds the most eggs. The winner gets a strawberry marker, some paper clips, and a straw. Brain has an additional prize for the winner.

After the egg hunt, D.W. and Bud are tied for most eggs found. One egg isn't found by any of preschoolers. Brain has trouble remembering where he hid it. He goes into his room for some peace and quite and then he takes a nap. We then see his dream. It's a tour of his brain. A hippo is in charge of the hippocampus. A Czech bat gives D.W. and Bud a tour of the rest of his brain. When Brain wakes up, he wonders why a Czech bat was in his dream. He then realizes that "Czech bat" sounds like "check bat" and his brain was telling him to check the bat house. He does so and there's the egg. However, since Brain merely showed the kids where it was and none of them found it on their own, neither D.W. nor Bud get credit for it. So it finishes in a tie. Brain says they can share the prize, a copy of "Universal Arithmetic" by Sir Isaac Newton. Neither D.W. nor Bud really want that. The episode never explains how they settled their bet. I guess they just kept their own stuff.
2. In "Brain Sees Stars", we learn that Brain is cursed.

Answer: False

There's going to be a meteor shower and Brain intends to see it. Every previous time that there has been a meteor shower, he missed it because he had to help someone. He works extra hard to make sure that everything is taken care of this time. However, people keep asking him to do things on the day of the meteor shower. He asks Arthur and Buster to substitute for him at the ice cream shop and he asks Fern to do a poetry reading instead of him, but Arthur and Buster get sick and Fern gets nervous and backs out, so Brain does all of those things.

Brain's mother explains that there is no curse. She explains that Brain is a very generous person who often sacrifices his own free time to help people in need. Brain could have seen all those previous meteor showers, but he willingly sacrificed his chances to see those events so he could help people in need. This time, he spends most of the day helping people, but he makes it to the meteor shower in time. However, Mr. Crosswire has a drive-in movie theater there which shows a lot of light and makes the meteor shower invisible. When Arthur, Buster, and Francine see how sad Brain is, they convince Mr. Crosswire to turn off the movie and tell everyone to watch the meteor shower. He does just that and everybody does just that. Arthur concludes the episode by tell Brain that there is one thing he can rely on: his friends.

This episode is dedicated to Walter Massey, the voice actor of Mr. Haney. He talks in this episode, which means it was recorded before he died, but it was released after he died. His final speaking role is in "Mr. Ratburn's Secret Identity". After this, the character of Mr. Haney moves to Tanzania to build a school there. Ms. Tingley becomes the principal in season 20 through 25.
3. In "Sue Ellen Adds it up", who convinces Sue Ellen that she is good at math?

Answer: Prunella

In the introduction, Sue Ellen tells the audience that she is bad at math. She says that her family does not use math. When it comes to cooking, figuring out how long it takes to school, etc. they use estimates and trial and error. She never really understands what Mr. Ratburn talks about when he's teaching math, nor does she know how to use a ruler.

After the title card, we see art class. Sue Ellen makes a beautiful painting. Prunella tells her, "You're so artistic." After school at a store with art supplies, Sue Ellen tells Prunella that she (Sue Ellen) is bad at math. Throughout much of the rest of the episode, Prunella tries to convince Sue Ellen that she is good at math. Prunella gives her some examples of how Sue Ellen uses math in day-to-day life (how Sue Ellen knew how much money she was going to spend, how Sue Ellen always gets to school on time, etc.). Sue Ellen usually rejects what Prunella says.

Sue Ellen intends to hang her painting over a water fountain. The school moves the water fountain due to a burst pipe and the painting will not fit in the new location as it is. In art class, Sue Ellen sees some colored clay animals that Prunella made. Prunella says that they are terrible because she is not an art person like Sue Ellen. Sue Ellen says they are great. Sue Ellen has to cut her painting and she is afraid that she will have to cut out something important. To thank Sue Ellen for letting her know that she is good at art, Prunella tells Sue Ellen that if she just trims a little bit from each side, she will not have to cut out anything important. Sue Ellen does this until the painting fits perfectly. Sue Ellen gets praised by the art teacher and by Prunella. At the end of the episode, Sue Ellen writes a dedication at the bottom right corner of the painting. It is dedicated to Prunella for teaching her that we are all math people. Prunella adds "and art people" to it.
4. In "Wish You Were Here", who visits Elwood City?

Answer: Tenzin

Tenzin is Sue Ellen's pen pal from Tibet. He was introduced in "Sue Ellen's Little Sister", the season two finale. Sue Ellen is an only child and she really wanted a sibling, so her parents sponsor him to he can go to school. From then on, he and Sue Ellen become pen pals. He does not appear again on the show until season 16, and that's in the unpopular episode "So Funny I Forgot to Laugh." His next appearance after that is in "Wish You Were Here", when he visits Elwood City and he finally meets Sue Ellen.

Sue Ellen's plan for the weekend is to let Tenzin join her karate class, go to a festival that plays Tibetan music, and hike a mountain. She thinks that because Tenzin is from Tibet, he will love these things. During Tenzin's visit, she learns that he is tired of these things and he wants to try new things. He wants to experience American things while he is there. Fern suggests a zombie movie. Francine suggests baseball. Muffy suggests a fashion show. Sue Ellen is shocked to learn that Tenzin loves all of those things. Tenzin says that he told her these things in his e-mails.

That night, when Sue Ellen re-reads Tenzin's old e-mails, she sees that Tenzin indeed mentioned these things and she didn't really read them. Sue Ellen takes Tenzin to a fashion show and Bailey gives him his ticket so he can go with Muffy while Sue Ellen waits outside. Tenzin insists that the only reason he came to Elwood City is to be with Sue Ellen and he wants to spend his last day with Sue Ellen and it does not matter what to do. Tenzin gives his ticket back to Bailey. The episode ends with him playing baseball and hitting a home run off of Francine, the best little league pitcher in Elwood City.
5. In "Spar for the Course", what do Buster, Muffy, and Binky design together?

Answer: A new minigolf hole

Buster, Muffy, and Binky play mini-golf together. The windmill on the 18th hole breaks. The owner says he is going to get a new windmill. The kids suggest that they get a chance to design a new hole. He gives them a week to come up with a good 18th hole or he will get another windmill.

They all have creative and elaborate ideas for an 18th hole, but none of them are practical in the real world. They decide to compromise and combine their ideas. After some trial and error, they make a model that impresses the owner.

He adds a windmill to their model and that becomes the 18th hole.
6. In "Dueling Detectives", Fern is one of the detectives. Who is the other one?

Answer: Binky

Before I saw the episode, the title made me think Buster was going to be the other detective. Buster is the first kid on the show to ever do detective work ("Arthur Accused" is the first episode with detective work) and he and Fern were essentially dueling detectives in "Binky Rules". However, in "Dueling Detectives" the other detective is Binky. If that comes as a surprise, remember that Binky is the one who correctly solved the case in "Crime and Consequences" and Fern got that one wrong.

Wally disappears. Fern has a dentist appointment, so George cannot find her. Binky is playing clarinet in the room where Wally's case is and he got a detective kit for Christmas, so George asks him for help. When Fern finally arrives, Binky initially treats her like a criminal. He then tells her that they have to work together on the case. They do so, and they both conclude that the other one stole Wally. Binky handcuffs her hand to his hand.

Fern had learned that Francine took Wally out of the case to play with it in front of Arthur, Buster, and Muffy to make them laugh. She did not steal it, but she left it out of the case. When Fern tells this to Binky, they both start talking about what must have happened. Simultaneously, they realize that Mr. Morris did not realize Wally was George's toy and he left it with the other kindergarten toys. They run to him, he admits it's true, and he shows them where Wally is. George is thrilled. Fern and Binky never become uncuffed during the episode (they must have been set free after the episode concluded). This season 19 episode must have taken place before the season seven episode "April 9th", because Mr. Morris retires and moves to Roswell, New Mexico in that episode but in this episode, he is still working in Elwood City.
7. In "Buster Isn't Buying it", Buster stops believing in aliens for a while. Who convinces him to believe in aliens again?

Answer: Mr. Morris

Buster gets angry when Brain criticizes his favorite TV show. When the show gets cancelled, the article explaining why it got cancelled says exactly what Brain said. Buster decides to give away all of his alien toys to George and turn over a new leaf.

He decides to only believe things that can be scientifically proven. His friends do not like this change because they found the old Buster to be more fun. One night, Mr. Morris calls Buster to tell him that he saw a UFO. When Buster asks him why he believes in UFOs and aliens, he explains that there are a ton of galaxies that we cannot see, even with our best telescopes. We do not know if they have life or not. Additionally, he believes in aliens because he likes to.

He says that makes life more fun. Buster agrees with this and decides to be the old Buster again.
8. In "One Ornery Critter", what is the name of Buster's aunt's dog?

Answer: Carrot Cake

Arthur is great at taking care of dogs. He volunteers at the animal shelter and one of the workers says that Arthur is the best dog person that he ever met. Buster asks Arthur to take care of his aunt's dog, Carrot Cake. For unknown reasons, Carrot Cake does not like Arthur and tries to avoid him all the time. Near the end of the episode, Carrot Cake tries to run away.

She gets trapped in bushes and she gets thorns in her nose. Arthur gets to handle her and, with the help of D.W. and Buster, the thorns get removed from the nose. Carrot Cake is taken to the shelter.

There, she licks Arthur's hand to show that she finally likes him. The other dogs are thrilled to see him.
9. In "Maria Speaks", what kind of problem does Maria have?

Answer: Stuttering

Maria was a silent background character for the first 18 and a half seasons of "Arthur". In season 19, she finally speaks and we learn that she has a stuttering problem. We learn that she sees a speech therapist about this. We also learn that she can talk to fish and hamsters without stuttering. Her best friend, Jenna, tries her best to help her and comfort her. This episode shows us how she works through her stuttering problem when she cannot hide it anymore.

Lakewood Elementary school starts a TV news show for the kids and each class takes turns presenting the news. Mr. Ratburn assigns Maria to be the lead reporter. This means that she can no longer hide her stutter and that makes her nervous. Jenna convinces her to do it. On the first day of rehearsal, Jenna becomes Maria's spokesperson. When Francine (the director) asks Maria a question, she whispers her answer to Jenna, who then tells Francine. Maria says she will do an interview, but on the first day, she does not know with whom.

At Jenna's house, Maria learns a way to communicate non-verbally. When Jenna lies to her mom, her mom gives Jenna a frowny look and Jenna tells the truth. Maria decides that she is going to try that. She will find a hyper-talkative candidate and then she will look at her in certain ways to make the candidate say what she wants the candidate to say.

At the last rehearsal before the show, Maria decides to interview Muffy. She lets Francine know this by pointing at Muffy when Francine asks Maria who she will interview. When they film it, Maria does a little bit of talking and stuttering, but then Muffy steps in to do the rest of the talking. When Muffy says that she loves helping people, Maria opens her mouth in astonishment. This gets Muffy to confess that she can be a LITTLE selfish. Maria then gives Muffy an angry look and Muffy breaks down and cries that it's too much pressure to be smart, pretty, and popular. Francine deems this interview as inappropriate for the news and asks Maria to interview someone else.

In the hallway, right after Maria asks Jenna who else is really talkative, Mr. Ratburn walks by while talking excessively about his new puppet show to Mr. Haney. Maria decides to interview Mr. Ratburn. The night before the show, she has a nightmare in which she makes animal noises and gets laughed at by everyone. The real show does not go quite like that, but it does not go well. Arthur shows her a cue card, but she cannot read any of it without stuttering. Most of the other kids are confused as to what is wrong. Maria runs out feeling embarrassed. Jenna tells them that Maria stutters. Maria does not see it, but they take the news a lot better than she expected.

Maria goes into another room and asks a hamster why she cannot talk to the people like she can talk to the answer. Mr. Ratburn walks in and explains that animals are easier to talk to. He also says that before performing in plays and puppet shows, he talks with his pet hermit crab. Mr. Ratburn also explains that he knew that Maria had a stuttering problem and he is trying to help her. He reveals that the reason that he made Maria the lead reporter is because it would help her with her stuttering problem. He volunteers to work with her so she will do better next time.

We see Maria working with her therapist. We also see how she improves her communication skills over the next few weeks. At the next show, her stuttering continues but it's reduced. She does her report on stuttering. She interviews Mr. Ratburn, who used to stutter. He explains how he got over it. After the show, Mr. Ratburn and the other kids congratulate Maria. The episode ends with her saying she has a lot of great ideas for their next show.
10. In "Carl's Concerto", George directs a puppet show that's a comedic version of what fairy tale?

Answer: Goldilocks and the Three Bears

When George comes to Arthur's house, D.W. and Bud are in a heated argument. George ends the argument by showing Wally to them and hiding behind a wall and speaking with it (so that the kids will think there's a talking giraffe in the house). Bud is amazed by this. D.W. is less impressed than Bud because she has has seen Wally before. In fact she owned Wally at the end of "Arthur's Dummy Disaster". However, she enjoys it, too. The two kids invite him to perform a puppet show at their school, which is hosting an event for the kids, their friends, and their family. Mr. Ratburn is invited, too. He decides to do it.

At the treehouse, George talks with Wally about what the show will be. He decides to do "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". He hears an accordion. He tracks down the source of the accordion and discovers that it his best friend, Carl. George invites Carl to play his accordion at the puppet show. Carl agrees to do so.

The puppeteers are Binky (Papa Bear), Rattles (Mama Bear) and Buster (Baby Bear). Goldilocks is renamed "Wally Locks" and Wally is dressed up in a blond wig and a blue dress. Carl sticks with his daily routine, which complicates the rehearsal - he has to have lunch at 12:15 PM, which is in the middle of rehearsal, and rehearsal has to be outside because Carl does not like George's garage. When Carl's accordion is out of tune and he goes home in the middle of rehearsal to get a new reed, George gets worried about him.

At the final rehearsal, Carl refuses to play the final tune because he does not feel like it. He says that he has been practicing it and it will be great. George is worried that Carl will be too nervous to perform or the audience will be too noisy for him. George asks Binky to bring his clarinet in case. That means Binky would have to give up being Papa Bear. Rattles volunteers to do Papa Bear and Mama Bear. Binky is fine with this but he says that George has to be the one to tell Carl.

George calls Carl the night before the show, but George gets too nervous to speak. On the day of the show, George tells Carl that he does not have to play if he does not want to. Carl says that he has been practicing a lot and he wants to do it. George lets Carl do it, which means Binky will not need his clarinet and Rattles will not do Papa Bear. Everybody loves the show. George tells Carl that he is great. Carl leaves for his snack time while the other performers just enjoy the applause.
11. In "Too Much of a Good Thing", what kind of a sweet thing is Buster addicted to?

Answer: Cookies

Buster wants to buy as many girl scout cookies as he can and gobble them up. Arthur reminds Buster that he does this every year and he gets sick. Arthur wants to stop that from happening again. Buster plans to give them to Arthur and tell Arthur to only give him one per day no matter how much he begs. Arthur rejects the idea of being the one to hold onto the cookies and he suggests that Buster give them to someone tougher. Arthur and Buster tell Binky of the deal and convince him to hold onto them. Binky strictly holds Buster to the deal.

Buster discovers that having one cookie a day is not much fun and he cannot concentrate in class because he is thinking too much about the cookies. In shop class, Buster notices that George has an empty cookie box, which George says that he uses for his design. Buster tells George what has happened. Buster and George come up with a plan in which they switch George's empty box for Buster's real box while the tough customers are not looking. They execute it to perfection. Binky comes over the next day and praises Buster for his cleverness. Binky gives Buster some cookies with nuts on them. Binky cannot eat those cookies because he is allergic to nuts. Buster gives all these cookies to Arthur. At the end of the episode, Buster takes one of the cookies, eats some of it, and puts the rest of it into his cabinet of curiosities.
12. In "Francine's Cleats of Strength", who does Francine work for after Muffy fires her?

Answer: Ms. MacGrady

After Francine's cleats break, she needs new shoes. The shoes she wants cost $100. Her father cannot afford to pay that much by himself, but he says that if she gets a job and earns $50, he'll pay the other $50. When Francine tells this to Muffy in the lunch line, Ms. MacGrady offer Francine a job. Francine wants to take it, but Muffy convinces her to turn it down and take an easier job as Muffy's "personal assistant."

Francine's "jobs" for Muffy include eating chips, playing games, and helping her choose outfits. Muffy pays Francine generously for these things. Francine is not happy because none of these things are real jobs. Francine tells Muffy that she does not need her because she has Bailey. Muffy decides to give Bailey a vacation, which he hasn't had in over 700 days (I'm guessing "The Butler Did What?" takes place that many days before this episode). Now, Francine is the new butler.

Muffy's house is huge and Francine does not know where everything is. She's also not an experienced cook so she cannot cook the dishes that Muffy requests. Muffy also has fancier equipment than the Frensky family, so Francine is not used to that. Bailey steps in and helps Francine with all of these things.

Muffy fires Francine because Bailey had to work even harder than he normally does. Francine then decides to work for Ms. MacGrady. Her jobs for Ms. MacGrady include raking leaves and cleaning gutters. Even after Francine raises enough money, she continues working for Ms. MacGrady because she wants to buy something else. In her first game with the new cleats, Francine scores a goal. After the game, Francine buys ice cream for the whole team.
13. In "Little Miss Meanie", Muffy enters a beauty pageant. Who else does?

Answer: Lydia

Muffy and Lydia are not happy when they find out the other one has entered the beauty pageant. Muffy thinks that the judges will sympathize with Lydia because of her wheelchair and automatically declare her the winner. Lydia thinks that Muffy will use her money (Muffy has a lot of it) to bribe the judges. Both of their best friends (Francine and Jenna) tell them that they are worried about nothing, but they do not believe that.

When Francine tells Muffy to quit, Muffy says that she will not quit but she will try to get Lydia to quit. Muffy rehearses at home what she intends to say to Lydia. Muffy thinks it is not mean. When Muffy sees Lydia again, a bully is talking to her. The bully tells Lydia exactly what Muffy was going to tell Lydia. Muffy realizes it is indeed mean. The bully also tells Muffy what Lydia was going to tell her. Muffy and Lydia decide to team up. They do not care which one of them wins as long as the bully doesn't win.

While the two girls are at Muffy's house, Francine calls. Muffy tells Lydia to answer the phone. Lydia tries to imitate Bailey's accent, but Francine isn't fooled. When Francine asks "Who is this?" Lydia drops the accent and and says "Hi Francine, this is Lydia." Francine knows that Lydia does not live at Muffy's place nor is she one of Muffy's best friends and Francine remembers that Muffy had told her she was going to convince Lydia to quit. Francine tells Lydia not to listen to Muffy. When Muffy overhears the conversation, she hurries and takes the phone and tells Francine she was kidding. When Muffy hangs up, she confesses to Lydia that she was going to tell her to drop out until she saw the bully do it. Lydia then admits that she was going to tell Muffy what the bully told her. The two girls are astonished to learn they have a lot in common.

At the pageant, Lydia shoots baskets behind her back and Muffy sings and dances to "Yankee Doodle Dandy." The bully does a dance routine that starts well, but then the spotlight breaks. When a judge tells her that she has to finish the routine without it, she gets angry and refuses to do so. Lydia and Muffy finished tied as the first runner up. The winner is a ukulele player that is shown in the title card. Lydia and Muffy agree that the ukulele player deserved to win because her appearance is unique for a pageant contestant and she is a great ukulele player. Besides, Lydia and Muffy were going to be happy as long as the bully didn't win. They end up deciding that beauty pageants are ridiculous and that they should have pageants for smart people instead.
14. In "Besties", who goes to the movies with Buster?

Answer: Ladonna

Buster and Ladonna invite Arthur to go to the movies with them, but he can't because he has to clean the garage. Buster and Ladonna go to the movies without him. The popcorn machine explodes and popcorn goes up in the air and falls down everywhere. Buster and Ladonna find this hilarious; they collect a few kernels of popcorn, and they spend the next few days telling jokes about it. Arthur starts to feel left out.

Sue Ellen tells him a story of a time something similar happened to her before she moved to Elwood City. Sue Ellen had one best friend, then another girl joined their friend group, then one day Sue Ellen had the flu so the other two girls did something together, and then they became best friends and Sue Ellen was discarded by the friend group. She fears that the same thing is happening to Arthur. To prevent this from happening, Arthur tells lies to Buster and Ladonna, saying that the other one said something bad about him or her. Arthur and Buster go to the zoo together and they see Ladonna. Buster and Ladonna get in a fight over what Arthur told them. Arthur ends the fight by telling them that he had lied to both of them because he didn't want to lose his best friend. A monkey steals someone's camera and takes photos with it. This time, Arthur, Buster, and Ladonna enjoy this crazy moment together. At the Sugar Bowl, they all tell Francine and Muffy about it. Francine and Muffy are not amused.
15. In "The Last Day", the third graders sing a song for who?

Answer: Mr. Ratburn

On the second to last day, Mr. Ratburn praises this class and thanks them for doing such a great job with their work and helping him become a better teacher. This gives Buster an idea. After school, Buster and Arthur compose a song for Mr. Ratburn and they teach it to the other kids. On the last day of school, Mr. Ratburn's whole class sings the song for him. He loves it. He then tells the class that he will be teaching fourth grade, so some of them will be in his class again next year. That thrills them.

This episode is dedicated to Greg Kramer, the voice of Nemo. Nemo does not appear in seasons 20-25 except in the season 21 two-part episode "The Master Builders". In that episode, he plays a major role without having to speak. In the special episode "An Arthur Thanksgiving", Tony Daniels provides the voice of Nemo. Daniels does a good job of making Nemo sound similar to Kramer's voice.
