Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Hide and Snake", is the snake venomous?

Answer: No

While Arthur and his friends are playing in the park, they find a snake. Arthur take it home to keep it safe from the thunder and lightning. His friends come over because they think it's venomous. They search the box it was in, but it escaped. They spend most of the episode trying to catch it before Arthur's parents find out, coming up with lies every time his mother asks them what is going on.

The snake ends up in Pal's dish. Arthur's mother is the first to find it and she is horrified. Brain discovers that the snake is not venomous. Arthur's father sees the snake and he is thrilled at the sight because he's seen these snakes all the time and they're not venomous. After his thrill subsides, he asks the kids how it got in the house. He ends up telling them to take it back where they found it. The kids comply.
2. In "Buster's Breathless", what medical complaints do D.W. and Buster have?

Answer: D.W. has poison ivy and Buster has asthma

At the beginning of the episode, Arthur and Buster ask D.W. to camouflage herself as some kind of fictional snake for a game they are playing. She does this by covering herself with leaves. Little does she know that those leaves are poison ivy. She ends up getting red marks on her skin. Her mother puts calamine lotion on her skin to heal the marks. She wears gloves and a hockey mask to cover up her red spots so people do not run away. When Arthur explains this to Buster, Buster spends most of the rest of the episode telling her about the time he learned that he had asthma.

One day, Arthur finds old joke books and the basement and he takes them to the tree house to read with Buster. The books are dusty and Buster coughs a lot. His mother takes him to the hospital. The doctor tells him that he has asthma. In the present, Buster tells D.W. that asthma is like trying to breathe through a clogged straw. He then resumes his story.

The other kids treated him differently when they found this out, trying to be extra careful not to set off his asthma. Arthur takes Buster's book (without Buster's permission) and wipes it with a wash cloth to make sure it is dust-free. When it's time for lunch, Buster stops in the nurse's office. Arthur, Francine, and Binky spy on him to see if he is faking it or if he will be transferred to another school. He takes medicine through his inhaler. When he leaves, he finds them at the door and gets mad at them for spying on him. At lunch, Buster gets a powdered donut but Arthur blows all the powder off the doughnut, thinking he is protecting his friend. At recess when they are playing baseball, Francine drops the ball and refuses to tag Buster. She then runs away from him because she thinks that asthma is contagious.

The next day at school, Buster tells his friends that he no longer has asthma. At lunch, he tries to go to the nurse, but his friends ask him why he is going there. He remembers what he said to his friends, so he does not go to the nurse and he goes to lunch. At recess, he plays broom soccer with his friends. Just as he scores a goal, he starts coughing again. He is rushed to the nurse. When the nurse asks why he skipped his appointment, he explains that his friends have been treating him oddly since they found out he has asthma so he told them that he was cured so things would go back to normal. The nurse tells him that they do not understand.

Buster gives his science report on asthma to help his friends understand it. He tells them to imagine that they are tiny. He then imagines breathing them all in through his nose. They end up in his lungs. He explains that when he breathes in dust, the lungs get smaller. They can feel the walls closing in on him and Buster warns them that he is about to cough. He coughs them all out and they return to normal size. George still has pie on his legs because he accidentally ended up in his stomach (so even though this was supposed to be "imagination", it turns out that they all really did get tiny and they got inside Buster's body and they didn't die).

Buster concludes his story that once his friends understood asthma, they didn't make a big deal out of it anymore. D.W. then realizes she should just explain her poison ivy to other people so they understand it. The Tibble twins see her and they run away from her. She tries to explain poison ivy to them wile running after them, but they are too busy running away to listen to her.
3. In "The Rat Who Came to Dinner", why does Mr. Ratburn temporarily live in the Reads' house?

Answer: His roof collapsed

Heavy snow causes Mr. Ratburn's roof to collapse. The Read parents allow him to stay in their house until his roof is fixed. Arthur is horrified at the thought. His friends agree with him that it will be horrible. When Mr. Ratburn comes, he turns out to be a very different person at home than he is at school. He watches cartoons, he does magic tricks, he loves cake, he wears casual clothes, and he doesn't always talk about homework. The other kids sympathize with Arthur until he comes to school the next day looking happy.

The other kids do not understand why Arthur is so happy at first. They think they've figured it out when he gets an A on the test. Arthur rarely gets A's, so they conclude that he became a "teacher's pet" when his parents let him stay in their house. Arthur talks about the problem to his parents and Mr. Ratburn overhears. The next day at lunch, Mr. Ratburn tells Arthur that he will not be staying in the Read house anymore. Instead, he will be staying in Francine's house for a week, then he'll be staying in Binky's house for a week, and then Muffy's house, etc. This horrifies the other kids. They quickly forgive Arthur and ask for advice on what it's like to live with Mr. Ratburn. The episode ends with Arthur telling the kids what to expect.
4. "The Blizzard" is the prequel to "D.W.'s Snow Mystery".

Answer: True

A huge blizzard comes through Elwood City. The weathermen in Elwood City are incompetent, so school stays open. When the electricity goes out at the school, that's when Mr. Haney closes it and sends everybody home. Mr. Ratburn tells everybody to hand in their reports on the pioneers before they leave. Most kids do that, but Francine's report is unfinished. She says she could not think of anything to write because the pioneers had no electricity and they lived in snow all the time and she thinks their lives must have been boring. Instead of failing her, he makes her do a three-page report due the next time that school is open.

Mr. Morris tells Mr. Haney and Mr. Ratburn that they have to stay at school and keep the pipes from freezing, or school will be closed for at least a month. This horrifies Mr. Ratburn, so he and Mr. Haney give in. They spend the night at school eating the beans that Mr. Morris brought and using candles to heat them. At one point, Mr. Haney shouts, "I hate school," which horrifies Mr. Ratburn.

Mr. Read goes to the grocery store to buy extra food, but Mr. Crosswire buys almost all of the food in the store before Mr. Read shows up. The Read house has electricity for most of the episode, so they allow the families without electricity to stay in their house until the storm ends. Francine had been trying to use the lack of electricity in the Frensky apartment as an excuse for not doing her report, but then Mr. Frensky calls the Reads and they let the Frenskys stay in their house. All of the guests bring food, so Mr. Read plans to combine it all into one big stew for everyone.

When the Crosswires' electricity goes out, Muffy thinks that all the electrical appliances in the house are broken. When her father explains the situation, she begs him to pay someone to fix it. He says that money cannot fix it. Back at the Read house, Mrs. Read tells Mr. Read to call the Crosswires. He says he's reluctant to do so because he thinks they have the money to find a way to keep warm that most people cannot afford. Back at the Crosswire house, we see Muffy and his parents screaming and running around the house, not knowing what to do. They get a phone call. It's Mr. Read, who invites them to stay at the Read house and they accept.

At the Read house, Mr. Read makes the stew and everybody else works together to make a fire to keep everyone warm and to shovel the driveways. As this is going on, Francine realizes that what they are going through is similar to what the pioneers went through every day. She says that she thinks she figures out how they survived: by everyone working together.

At the end of the episode, the power comes back on and the snow stops. The last scene we see in the episode is a scene we previously saw in "D.W.'s Snow Mystery", suggesting that this episode is the prequel to that particular episode from season one.
5. In "Prunella Gets it Twice", Prunella gets two Polly Locket dolls for her birthday. One of them is from Rubella. Who gives her the other one?

Answer: Francine

Prunella gets Rubella's Polly Locket doll first. When she opens the one from Francine, she's not so thrilled because she'd already gotten one. Francine is devastated by this. As Prunella goes to bed, she tells Rubella that her birthday was perfect except for Francine, saying that Francine is a selfish bully who always has to be the center of attention. While Prunella sleeps, two ghosts visit her to show her everything that Francine did to work up the money to get that doll.

Francine wanted to reward Prunella for helping her get an A on the test. Her family does not have much money and Muffy refused to loan anything to her, so Francine took several extra jobs to work up the money to get a personalized Polly Locket doll for Prunella. It takes Prunella a long time to understand what the ghosts are telling her, but by the end, Prunella realizes how mean she was to Francine. The next day, Prunella thanks Francine for the Polly Locket doll and Prunella shows that the doll's face opens and she put her most treasured possession inside, which is a photo of Francine. Prunella then gives Rubella's Polly Locket doll to Francine. Francine, in turn, invites Prunella over for lunch.
6. In "Binky Barnes, Wingman", what type of insect does Binky become obsessed with?

Answer: Butterfly

It's bug week in Elwood City and Mr. Ratburn assign each student to do a report on the bug of his or her choice. Upon Sue Ellen's suggestion, Binky chooses butterflies. He researches them and learns a lot about them, and then he catches a lot of butterflies in a net, puts them in a box, and then puts them in a tent.

There's one blue butterfly that Binky is particularly obsessed with that he has a hard time catching. He goes crazier and crazier trying to catch it. Arthur and Sue Ellen compare Binky to Captain Ahab from "Moby Dick". Eventually, Binky catches it. He plans to give his butterfly collection to the museum, but then he discovers that all the butterflies in the museum are dead. On the day of his report, he gets Mr. Ratburn's permission to do it outside, where he releases the butterflies. He gets an A on the presentation but he forgot to do the written part of his report.
7. Arthur introduces "To Beat or Not to Beat" by telling us that Francine can do a lot of things well. What can she NOT do well?

Answer: Play drums and sing at the same time

There's a talent show at Lakewood Elementary. Most of the kids talk to each other about what they well do, but Francine says they she will not tell anyone so that they'll be surprised at the show. As Arthur, Buster, and Brain are walking around town, they hear a noise that they hate. They discover that it's Francine playing drums on the roof while singing.

They are afraid to tell her how they really feel because they don't want to hurt her feelings, but they also want to tell her the truth because they don't want her to be ridiculed at the show. Arthur is also afraid that, even though the three boys hate it, it might become a huge hit and he does not want to be the one who denies Francine of that. This gives Buster the idea to get Muffy to hear it because she knows what's popular. Brain says that Muffy would never say anything bad about Francine because they're best friends. This gives Arthur an idea to record this and play it for Muffy without telling her that it's Francine.

The three boys return to the apartment disguised as bushes. They have a tape recorder attached to a toy car. They deploy the car and it gets close enough to Francine to record everything they need. They play the tape for Muffy. Muffy says that it's the worst thing she's ever heard. She is stunned when they tell her it's Francine. She says that Francine is usually a great drummer and she asks why she sounds so bad on the tape. Brain says that Francine's singing is affecting her drumming. Arthur then realizes that they do not need to tell her to drop out of the show, they just need to tell her to drum without singing.

The four of them go to Francine's apartment and they all talk to her one by one. She thinks that they are all jealous and she does not believe them. They then go the the treehouse, stunned that she does not believe any of them. She comes to the treehouse with the tape, telling them that one of them dropped it in her hallway. She says that she listened to the tape and it sounds awful and she asks the kids what it is. Most of them are afraid to tell her the truth. Arthur tells her the truth. She then realizes that she is not ready to do two things at the same time and she has to only do one thing. This makes the other kids happy, thinking that she will play the drums and not sing.

At the talent show, when it's Francine's turn to perform, the first thing the other four kids notice is that there's a microphone and a cassette and no drums. They then realize that she's going to do the opposite of what they wanted her to do: she's going to sing and not play the drums. They are very scared for how bad it's going to sound and how bad the audience will treat her. Francine turns on the music and starts singing. To their shock, she's a great singer. After her performance, she thanks her friends for telling her the truth. Arthur asks why she's a great drummer and she's also a great singer, but she's bad at doing them both at the same time. She explains that it's more difficult to do both things at the same time than it is to do one at a time and she just needs more practice.
8. In "To Beat or Not to Beat", who wins the talent show?

Answer: George

When the winner is announced, Arthur is upset and he turns to his friends and says "George? He always wins!" That's because a recurring theme of this show is that George usually wins the contests. Muffy tells Francine that she should have won the contest. Francine is okay with losing and decides she just needs more practice.
9. In "1001 Dads", who has a surprise for the Elwood City Father's Day Picnic?

Answer: Buster

The episode begins with Buster getting a phone call from his father. After the call he runs outside excitedly saying "This is gonna be the best Father's Day ever!" Arthur asks why, but Buster says that it's a surprise. Arthur thinks that Buster is just trying to hide his sadness because his father is not in town. Throughout the episode, Arthur finds several different older childless males (most of them are adults but one of them is Binky) and asks them to pretend to be Buster's father for one day. They all agree to do this but Buster says "no" to them all and he gets increasingly angry that Arthur keeps doing this. Arthur refuses to believe that Buster has plans that he won't share with his best friend, but Buster sticks with this story.

At the Father's day picnic, Buster and his mother make an entrance on a hot air balloon. It turns out the big surprise is that Buster's father rented hot air balloon rides for everyone in town.
10. In "Prunella's Prediction", two kids are ashamed of their clothes. One of them is Prunella. Who is the other one?

Answer: Arthur

Prunella watches TV and sees a girl wearing flash pants and she wants them. Rubella hears their mother saying that their grandparents are sending Prunella a gift for her birthday (didn't she just have a birthday two episodes before this one?) and it's something silver that she can wear. Rubella then tells Prunella a fortune, saying that she senses that Prunella will get something silver that she can wear. Prunella is excited because she thinks it's flash pants. Later that day, she is at the clothing store with Muffy. Prunella tells Muffy that she has flash pants and she'll wear them at the skating rink. This causes Muffy to buy flash pants. It turns out, Prunella's birthday gift was a silver watch and not flash pants. Prunella is embarrassed that she told Muffy that she has flash pants when she doesn't. Muffy calls and tells her that she wants to see her flash pants. Prunella decides to hide in her room all winter. She goes to the grocery store in disguise to buy enough food for the winter.

Meanwhile, Grandma Thora babysits the kids while their parents are on vacation and Arthur outgrows his old coat. Since his parents are not around to buy him a new one, Thora gives him his father's old coat. It's based on Mr. Puffy, a comic book superhero that Arthur's dad loved when he was a kid but Arthur has never heard of. Arthur is embarrassed to wear it in public. He decides he will hide in his room all winter. He also goes to the grocery store to buy supplies.

Prunella cannot see with the fake glasses she is wearing, so she bumps into a stock of cans, falls over, and her disguise falls off. Arthur sees her there and she seems him in the Mr. Puffy coat. Prunella recognizes the coat and says that she loves Mr. Puffy. Arthur admits that he had been ashamed of it, but he thanks Prunella for allowing him to not be ashamed of what he is wearing. Prunella then thinks about what Arthur says and then she decides that she's not ashamed of what she is wearing, either. The two of them decide to go to the rink together.

At the rink, Prunella tells Muffy that she decided not to wear her flash pants because she did not want them to get dirty. Muffy says that she only wore hers because Prunella said she was going to wear hers, and Muffy goes home to change into some regular clothes so she can skate. Muffy never finds out the truth (that Prunella does not have flash pants), but Prunella decides that she no longer cares about what she wears and she no longer cares what Muffy thinks.
11. In "What is That Thing?", what is that thing?

Answer: Bobbin

The episode begins with Arthur explaining how many items have multiple uses. For example tires can also be swings, reeds can also be spitball shooters, and wood can be used to make fire.

After the title card, Arthur's mother makes him take D.W. to the library to see Mr. Ratburn's puppet show about inventors. Arthur asks all his friends for help, but they are all busy trying to do something else. Near a mailbox, Arthur finds something on the ground. He says, "What is that thing?" and then he imagines it as a yo-yo for leprechauns. D.W. tries to take it out of his hands, but after a brief struggle, it falls on the ground and rolls away.

It rolls into Brain's front yard. He says, "What is that thing?" and then he concludes it's a wheel for a model airplane. He then attaches it to his model airplane and then flies it. It flies very well for a few minutes, but then it crashes into Buster's roof and the thing falls off.

Nemo is afraid of water and he sees it everywhere in the apartment (Ms. Frensky is doing dishes and Mr. Frensky is watching surfing on TV.). Francine takes him outside to get him away from water. She sees the thing hanging in a tree and she says, "What is that thing?" She uses it to hypnotize Nemo. Afterwards, Nemo is no longer afraid of water. A bird takes the thing in its beak and carries it away.

Brain and Francine walk into each other on the street. Brain asks her if she has seen a wheel for a model airplane and Francine asks him if he has seen a cat hypnotizer. They both say, "No," not knowing that they are talking about the same thing.

The bird drops the thing near Muffy. She says, "What is that thing?" and she uses it to save a doll that got stuck in a grate. After she gets her doll back, the thing rolls away.

Buster is the next one to find it and he says, "What is that thing?" Francine, Muffy, and Brain find him with it. The three of them get in an argument over what it is. Mr. Ratburn comes in and tells them that it's a bobbin and it's his. It is part of his puppet show and he had to postpone the show to find it. When the kids ask what a bobbin is, he says "Come to the puppet show and find out. It will start in a few minutes." Brain's plane crashes. They mourn it for a few seconds, then go to the show.

The puppet show shows how the sewing machine was invention. The bobbin is part of it. The kids all love the show. Arthur asks the kids how they solved all the problems they were having. They all explain that the bobbin solved those problems. The episode ends by showing us how the bobbin helped Buster: it was part of a Bionic Bunny episode that Buster wrote.
12. In "Buster's Best Behavior", Buster trades personalities with who?

Answer: Arthur

Buster is sad because he is not the best at anything. Francine is the best athlete he knows, Binky and Sue Ellen are the best musicians he knows, and Brain is the smartest kid he knows. Buster decides he wants to be different.

At first, Buster tries to be the best soccer player. He tries copying Francine's every move. That doesn't accomplish anything except make her angry. He then sees Muffy bragging about her outfit, so he tries to be the male version of her (the school's fashion expert). He fails to impress anyone. He then tries to do math the way Brain does it, but he can't. He then tries to be a tough customer, but he sees he cannot be as tough as Binky.

Meanwhile, Arthur is jealous of Buster because everyone likes him. Arthur acknowledges that Buster isn't the best at anything, but Arthur loves what Buster does. D.W. even asks her parents if they can trade Arthur to Buster's family (so that Buster could be her new brother and Arthur could move out). This makes her parents angry, but Arthur decides that D.W. is right. At school the next day, Arthur asks his friends how he can be like Buster. Brain suggests that he reads a lot of joke books.

When Francine and Muffy ask Arthur why Buster is acting strangely, they see Arthur reading a joke book and telling jokes, something Buster would normally do. They conclude that Arthur is acting like Buster.

Meanwhile, Buster realizes that it was wrong to try to be the best at something. He concludes that he should be like the person he most admires. The two people he most admires are Abraham Lincoln and Arthur. Buster decides that it would take him years to grow a beard like Lincoln, so he chooses to be like Arthur.

At the Sugar Bowl, Francine and Muffy try to tell Brain what's going on with Arthur and Buster. At first, Brain does not believe it. Then, Buster walks in wearing a yellow shirt and complaining about D.W. and Arthur walks in reading a joke book and telling jokes. Brain, Francine, and Muffy walk away, feeling astonished.

Arthur and Buster hang out at the Sugar Bowl together. Arthur tells a joke that Buster knows. Buster reluctantly says, "That Pal is one smart dog." Arthur ends up leaving.

Buster tells Francine that Arthur has become boring because all he does is tell old jokes that Buster his heard before. Francine's jaw drops because that's exactly what Buster used to do. Meanwhile, Arthur tells Brain that Buster isn't funny anymore because all he does is complain about D.W. and no one wants to hear anyone complain about D.W. all the time. This is odd because in most episodes, Arthur complains about D.W.

The next day at school, Brain, Francine, and Muffy are concerned about Arthur and Buster. Francine says "Arthur's so depressed. It's like he lost his best friend," to which Muffy replies "It's like he IS his best friend." Brain tells the girls that he did a lot of research but he couldn't find any answers.

Francine angrily tells Arthur and Buster to stop acting like each other and go back to being themselves. They say that they just wanted to act like a really great person, but Francine keeps yelling. The episode ends with Buster reading a joke book, Arthur complaining about D.W., and Francine being happy that things are normal again.
13. In "My Music Rules", who does D.W. invite to the library?

Answer: Yo-Yo Ma

Grandma Thora takes D.W. to a Yo-Yo Ma concert. Initially, D.W. is not looking forward to it. When the concert happens, D.W. says it's the best thing she has ever heard. Grandma Thora takes D.W. backstage so D.W. can ask Yo-Yo Ma if he can play at the library. Yo-Yo Ma says yes.
14. In "My Music Rules", who does Arthur invite to the library?

Answer: Francine's uncle

Arthur and Francine are in a hurry to come up with an idea for a musician because D.W. had said that she was going to find the author of "Crazy Bus" and get him to play at the library. Francine's dad overhears the conversation and says Francine's uncle Josh is a musician who can play anything. Arthur and Francine are excited to hear him. Mr. Frensky gives Josh a call and he agrees to perform at the library.
15. In "That's a Baby Show!", what show does Arthur become a fan of?

Answer: Love Ducks

D.W. watches "Mary Moo Cow", to which Arthur says "That's a baby show." After "Mary Moo Cow" ends, Arthur plans to watch a new show that Buster and Francine told him about called "Dark Bunny". It's a spin-off of "Bionic Bunny", where he turns from a superhero into an evil villain. D.W. tells him that "Mary Moo Cow" is not a baby show and that the baby show begins when "Mary Moo Cow" ends and it's "Love Ducks". Arthur plans to wait until D.W. is out of the room to change the channel so she does not get scared of "Dark Bunny". Just as D.W. leaves and Arthur is about to change the channel, "Love Ducks" begins. Arthur is instantly fascinated by it.

The next few days, Arthur watches "Love Ducks" instead of "Dark Bunny". He keeps coming up with lies to explain to Buster and Francine why he never watches "Dark Bunny". He is afraid to tell them that he likes "Love Ducks" because he's afraid that will make his friends think he is a baby.

One day, Buster says that he missed a "Dark Bunny" episode because his baby cousin came over and they had to watch "Love Ducks". Brains says that "Love Ducks" is the worst show ever. Arthur defends "Love Ducks". Brain and Buster are astonished to hear that Arthur likes "Love Ducks". Arthur tells them that he has a baby sister (Kate) who watches "Love Ducks," and they believe him.

The next day, Buster and Francine invite Arthur to play soccer. Arthur refuses and hurries home. They decide to spy on him to see what he is up to. They discover that he really is a fan of "Love Ducks". When they get away from his house, they share a laugh.

In class the next day, Francine loudly tells everyone that Arthur loves "Love Ducks". Arthur spends the whole day being ridiculed. Buster decides to buy ice cream for him to cheer him up. On the way to the Sugar Bowl, they pass by a store with TVs that are showing "Love Ducks". Buster becomes a fan of the show. Arthur and Buster buy the "Love Ducks" CD together.

The next day, Buster convinces Francine to stop bullying Arthur about the show. All the kids in Mr. Ratburn's class end up listening to the CD. Later, they all go to the Read house to watch the show. Francine admits that she had seen it before and she actually likes it. The episode concludes with Kate becoming a fan.
