Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Arthur's Faraway Friend", who is Arthur's faraway friend?

Answer: Buster

In the 13th episode of season two, Buster leaves Elwood City and he remains out of Elwood City for the rest of season two. He'd been living with his mother ever since his parents divorced. At this point, he is going to live with his father in New York City for two months. Buster is conflicted about the idea. He does not want to leave his friends behind and he'll have to adjust to life in a different city: a city that is louder, noisier, and more polluted than the city that he grew up in. However, he misses his father and he wants to spend time with him. Initially, Arthur comes up with schemes to try and keep Buster in Elwood City, but when Buster says that he wants to spend time with his father, Arthur becomes very sad.

Arthur explains his feelings about this to Sue Ellen because her family moves around a lot, so she's the expert on this. She explains that it will be a lot harder for Buster than for Arthur because he's leaving all his friends behind and moving to a new place, which is scary. Arthur then decides that Buster needs him more than ever, so he decides to spend time with Buster on his final day in Elwood City as he says goodbye to everyone and everything in Elwood City. When it's time for Buster to go, he says goodbye Arthur one last time. This makes Arthur sad for a few days. Arthur decides to send a letter to Buster.

Some time later, Arthur gets a package from Buster. It has souvenirs from the places that he's been to and it has the next chapter of a book that he and Arthur had been writing together. In the end, they decide to send packages back and forth with letters about what they've been doing and chapters for the book. In the end, Arthur is okay with not seeing Buster for a few months because they still communicate with each other via mail. A few other season two episodes are narrated as Arthur's letters to Buster telling him what's going on in Elwood City.
2. In "Arthur and the Square Dance", some of the older kids think that Arthur is in love with who?

Answer: Francine

Ms. MacGrady runs a square dancing class during recess whenever it rains outside. One time, Arthur and Francine become partners and Binky and Muffy become partners. Arthur and Francine dance well together. Binky swings Muffy around too fast and at one point, he throws her into Sue Ellen's back, which causes a chain reaction where everybody falls down. After the class, Muffy tells Arthur that she wants to be his partner. He says yes, but Francine steps in and says that Arthur is her partner and no other girl is allowed to have him. Then the two of them ride away in her father's garbage truck. Binky and Muffy see this and they conclude that Arthur and Francine are in love with each other and they're boyfriend and girlfriend.

The next day before school, Binky mocks Arthur for being in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with Francine. Arthur walks away laughing that Binky would think that and he goes to Francine's locker to tell her what Binky said, hoping that Francine will also laugh. Francine reveals that she found two cowboy hats in the basement and hid them in her locker for the next time they go square dancing. The two kids put them on and dance together in front of Francine's locker as a joke. A few other kids see this and Arthur notices them, so he gives back the hat and hurries away.

In the girl's locker room, Francine tries to give her old baseball glove to Muffy because she got a new one. Muffy says it's too small for her, so Francine tells her to give it to Arthur because maybe it will help him catch (Arthur has problems with catching baseballs and this was previously revealed in the season one episode "Arthur Makes the Team"). On the baseball field, right after Binky teases Arthur some more, Muffy does exactly what Francine told her to do (Muffy gives Francine's old glove to Arthur). Muffy does not explain why Francine did this, so Arthur concludes that Francine might be in love with him. This horrifies him. From this point on, Francine tries extra hard to talk to him to find out why he's acting odd around him and he tries extra hard to avoid her.

Francine talks to Prunella about Arthur. Prunella says that Arthur is in love with Francine. Prunella tells Francine to tell Arthur that she is not in love with him, but Prunella warns Francine to be careful to be gentle with him or she'll break his heart. Francine agrees to this.

The next day at lunch, Ms. MacGrady tells Arthur and Francine that a storm is about to come (Ms. MacGrady can feel it in her elbow). Right after she says that, they hear thunder. Arthur and Francine agree not to dance with each other. At first, Arthur dances with Muffy and Francine dances with Binky. Because both Muffy and Binky are lousy partners, Arthur and Francine end up back with each other. They both conclude that the other one only wants to dance with them, so the simultaneously say "I'm not in love with you." The episode ends with the two of them mending their friendship.
3. In "Water and the Brain", does the Brain get over his hydrophobia?

Answer: No

Brain refuses to go to Muffy's birthday party at Water World (an amusement park with water rides). Muffy, Binky, and Francine conclude that Brain is a snob who thinks he is better than all of them. Arthur refuses to believe that and he eventually discovers that the Brain is afraid of water. Arthur and Binky try various methods to cure Brain's hydrophobia, but none of them work.

He ends up going to Water World, but he merely provides free and dry towels for the other kids. He does not go on the rides.
4. In "Arthur the Unfunny", does Arthur find a way to make people laugh?

Answer: Yes

In Elwood City, people are raising money for the library. Muffy has a carnival in her huge backyard and gets her assistants to set up rides. Arthur misses Buster and he comes up with an idea that he thinks Buster would suggest, which is for them to be clowns. The other kids agree. The other kids practice clown tricks like juggling and cartwheels. Arthur practices telling jokes, but no one laughs. Muffy does not want him at her carnival, so she tells Francine to talk to him. Francine tells Arthur to try another job besides being a clown. Arthur says that he knows he is funny because he used to make Buster laugh all the time. Francine explains that Buster is just polite and does not want to upset Arthur, but Arthur does not believe that.

Arthur's mother tells him to practice the piano. Arthur does that, and makes a few mistakes which cause Kate to laugh. He then intentionally plays some wrong notes and makes funny faces while playing and this makes Kate laugh some more.

At the Sugar Bowl, Muffy tells the kids there that Arthur is not allowed to be a clown at her carnival unless they can train him into being a good clown. They agree to this and they show up at Arthur's house to try to teach him some clown tricks. Arthur does not successfully learn any of them. Muffy hires Pickles the clown to teach Arthur professional clowning. Pickles then tells Arthur not to be a clown when he grows up. Arthur admits that he is not funny.

The carnival comes and Arthur is the piano player. The other kids are clowns and they all appear onstage doing clown tricks. Arthur notices that Kate is in the audience and he intentionally plays some off-key notes and make silly faces, being content with just making her laugh. It turns out that he was the best clown there: he made everybody laugh except D.W. Pickles congratulates Arthur for finding his own way of clowning. Pickles explains that there are multiple ways to do things and that everyone needs to find their own way.
5. In "Grandma Thora Appreciation Day," why did Arthur and D.W. throw a party for their grandmother?

Answer: They thought she was sad

When Arthur and D.W. spend a weekend at Grandma Thora's house, they learn that she has no cable, no tasty snacks, she keeps her teeth in a jar, and she gets lonely when they are not there. They conclude that she must be the saddest person in the world, so they decide to throw a party for her. Their parents like the idea and their father calls it "Grandma Thora Appreciation Day."

The kids decide that they want to plan the party all by themselves because it was their idea, repeatedly rejecting their parents' help. This results in a lot of things going wrong. For example, when Arthur invites Ms. MacGrady to the party (because she is one of Thora's closest friends), the other kids overhear it and they want to come to the party too. He reluctantly invites them, so they need to buy more food than they expected. When they go shopping, Arthur leaves his list at home so they go off of D.W.'s list, and candy is the only thing on her list. D.W. refuses to help with the decorating and when Arthur finally asks his mother for help, D.W. says they do not want her help and their mother listens to D.W. instead of Arthur.

Grandma Thora unexpectedly shows up at their house one night because her car broke down in front of their house. The kids try to convince her to leave (because they are not done planning the party) but she stays. While the adults sleep, Arthur and D.W. decorate the house. They then try to bake a cake, but they cannot read the recipe and all they do is wake up their parents. Finally, the kids say "Help!" and their father bakes a big cake and a few cupcakes. When their work is done, they go to sleep and they sleep late. Thora wakes up early and she has her car fixed while the kids are sleeping.

The party happens and all the guests are having fun, but then the kids realize to their horror that they forgot to invite their grandmother. At first, they decide to just continue the party without her. She returns to the house because she wondering why they'd been sleeping so late. All the guests hide and then they come out and shout "Surprise!" D.W. explains that the party was so that she wouldn't be sad. It turns out Grandma Thora was never really sad (at the beginning of the episode, she was clearly content with her home life and the kids were clearly mistaken about her), but she appreciates the thought. The episode ends with Dave and Thora dancing together.
6. In "Fern's Slumber Party", we learn that Fern is a master... what?

Answer: Detective

Throughout this episode, we see Fern in her room with a "Sherlock Holmes" book and we see her with action figures pretending that she is Sherlock Holmes solving mysteries. Her mother proposes a slumber party so that Fern can develop her social skills, which Fern reluctantly agrees to. The other girls' mothers make the girls go to the party, though they do not want to. They decide to bring their own toys and games so Fern will have less work to do planning the party. Fern looks happy to hear that at first.

At first, the girls are having fun at the party, although they're all doing their own things and not really being together. After a while, they get bored. Suddenly, Francine's bracelet disappears. The girls look for it and then Fern says she knows where it is. Fern then spends a few minutes telling a detective story about what happened to the bracelet. It turns out that the bracelet is in the trash. The other girls applaud Fern for her detective work. The episode concludes with Fern reading a "Sherlock Holmes" book to the other girls and her mother overhearing this and saying "I knew this party was a good idea."
7. What happens in "Francine Redecorates?"

Answer: Catherine moves out of the room

Francine and Catherine share a bedroom because their parents don't have enough money for them to get their own rooms. In "Francine Redecorates", she gets an Ottoman from the Reads. Catherine gets upset when Francine brings it into their room. They decide to redecorate their room.

They cannot agree on how to do it, so Catherine moves out of the room and her new bedroom becomes a small space in the living room near the window. At first, they are glad to not have to share a room anymore. But then they miss each other. Plus, Catherine feels her new room is too small and Francine feels that her room is too big without Catherine.

In the end, Catherine moves back into the room and they combine their decorative ideas and resources for the room.
8. In "Arthur the Loser", what game does Arthur keep losing?

Answer: No Guessing

Arthur buys a board game called "No Guessing" after seeing an ad for it on TV. His friends always beat him at it and that makes him feel sad. One night, Arthur plays "Go Fish" with D.W. Just as D.W. is about to win, Arthur decides to cheat (by lying about what was in his hand and then by distracting her and changing the cards in his hand). He then realizes he can also cheat at "No Guessing." He does so, and then he starts "winning" again. He ends up playing other games against every kid in school and he ends up "winning" them all.

At first, the other kids have a hard time believing that Arthur is a cheater because he has a reputation for being the most honorable kid in school. Then, they all get tired of him winning all the time. They find Binky, who has a reputation for being a cheater. They convince him to challenge Arthur at "No Guessing", which Arthur accepts. Several other kids watch them play, so Arthur decides not to cheat. Arthur discovers that his friends are rooting for Binky and he asks why. Fern explains that Arthur has not been very nice to his friends, so they all want him to lose. Arthur decides that he'd rather lose the game than lose his friends, so he helps Binky win. As he shakes Binky's hand, cards fall out of Arthur's sleeve exposing him as a cheater. Arthur concedes that he has learned that cheating is wrong. His friends forgive him and they all go to the Sugar Bowl together.
9. In "Finders Key-pers", who owns the key?

Answer: Mr. Morris

Arthur finds a key on the school's baseball field. He, Binky, and Brain have different theories about what the key opens. None of them are correct. After fighting over it for a while, they decide to return it to the baseball field. Mr. Morris finds it and says that he'd been looking all over for it. It turns out the key unlocks the sprinkler system for the baseball field.
10. In "Sue Ellen's Little Sister", does Sue Ellen get a little sister?

Answer: No

At a festival, Sue Ellen notices that some of her friends have brothers and/or sisters and they seem to have fun together. This makes Sue Ellen jealous. She tells her parents that she wants a brother or sister. For most of the episode, she tries pretending that her friends are her brothers and sisters. She ends up suffering a lot because of this. Back at home, she begins to appreciate being an only child now that she has seen the disadvantages of having a sibling.

Her parents tell her that they have sponsored a boy in Tibet named Tenzin. Tenzin's family couldn't afford school, so Sue Ellen's parents paid for school for him. Sue Ellen and Tenzin send letters to each other for the duration of the show's run. In "So Funny I Forgot to Laugh" Tenzin sends Sue Ellen a sweater that Arthur makes fun of. In "Wish You Were Here" Tenzin's family visit the United States and Sue Ellen finally meets him.
