Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Montreal

Answer: North America

The largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec, Montreal is found in the southwest of the province next to the border with Ontario. One of the more noteworthy cultural and historical cities in the nation, it sits on the Saint Lawrence River as it comes from Lake Ontario and marks the start of French-speaking Canada (coming from the west). Mount Royal is the centrepiece of the city; reaching 233m in elevation, the buildings in Montreal can't top out higher than this natural feature.
2. The Everglades

Answer: North America

Located in the U.S. state of Florida, the Everglades are a large stretch of wetlands that extend southward from Orlando and encompass most of the southern reach of the peninsula between Lake Okeechobee, Miami, Naples, and Key West. Often flooded, the region is a unique home to a number of native animals and very few people.

There are often massive conservation efforts in the region to protect this vulnerable ecosystem.
3. The Hawaiian Islands

Answer: North America

Although quite removed from the continent itself, the Hawaiian Islands are part of the United States, acting as the fiftieth state in the union. Located in the North Pacific, these volcanic islands are generally seen as tropical, and they're quite unlike the rest of the U.S. as a result.

The islands in this chain stretch across more than fifteen hundred kilometres, and the island of Hawaii, proper, is the southernmost point in the States.
4. The Andes Mountains

Answer: South America

Creating a spine down the side of South America that stretches nearly nine thousand kilometres from Venezuela to the southern top of Chile, the Andes are the longest mountain chain in the world and are the highest peaks outside of the Himalayas of Asia. To the west, much of the Andes lead into coastal regions and cities; to the east, they lead to the Amazon in the north and the Pampas of Argentina to the south.
5. Colombia

Answer: South America

Found on the border between Central America and South America, the nation of Colombia borders Panama before it becomes the South American continent. With vibrant cities on the coast, unique locations in the mountains, and even a portion of the Amazon, it's a very diverse destination. Considered part of Latin America, its primary language is Spanish.

While the capital is Bogota, you might also be interested in visiting Cartagena, Medellin, or Barranquilla.
6. Buenos Aires

Answer: South America

The capital city of Argentina, Buenos Aires is one of the largest cities in all of South America. Sitting on the Atlantic coast, it's a cultural hub for the continent, being a haven for arts, food, and Spanish heritage. Argentina, being the second-largest country in South America, is quite vast, so while Buenos Aires is conveniently located near the Uruguayan border in a particularly pleasant spot for weather, it's quite far from most other major Argentine cities.
7. Barcelona

Answer: Europe

Sitting on the Mediterranean Sea on Spain's northeast coast, the city of Barcelona is one of the country's largest. Known for its hot weather, beaches, and eccentric architecture, it's a popular spot for sightseeing. Barcelona is also home to the massive Basílica de la Sagrada Família, which started construction in 1882 and became one of the largest Catholic churches in the world well before it was completed.
8. The Acropolis

Answer: Europe

The most famous landmark in Athens, Greece, the Acropolis sits atop the city, overlooking the capital from a rocky outcrop visible from the surrounding area. Home to the Parthenon and a number of other temples, the Acropolis is a constantly-active archaeological site, and even though it's frequently visited by tourists, it's part of a concerted preservation effort to protect key sites from Ancient times.
9. Sicily

Answer: Europe

Found at the toe end of the boot that is Italy, the island of Sicily sits in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and contains some of the most active volcanoes in Continental Europe (including Mount Etna). From culture-rich cities like Palermo, Messina, and Catania, visitors to Sicily will find an atmosphere just a bit removed from the rest of Italy due to its separate history, its unique architecture (more castles!), and its distinct food scene, all of which span millennia.
10. The Taj Mahal

Answer: Asia

Built in the 17th century in white marble, the Taj Mahal is the most recognized landmark of India and it's located on the banks of the Yamuna River in the city of Agra. Located on a massive expanse of walled grounds, the building is actually a tomb, built to house the remains of the wife of a former emperor. Millions of foreign tourists visit the city every year to see this building.
11. Hong Kong

Answer: Asia

One of the most built-up city centres in the world, Hong Kong emerged as one of the biggest locations for banking and international business in the late 20th century. Found off the south coast of China, at one point Hong Kong was a British colony, contributing to the region's flexibility as a port city. Today, it's one of the richest locations in the world and home to a mix of Chinese and Cantonese cultural staples and landmarks alongside influences from virtually everywhere.
12. Lake Baikal

Answer: Asia

The world's deepest lake and the second-largest freshwater lake in Asia, Lake Baikal is found in Russia, specifically in Siberia. Considered the oldest lake in the world, Baikal contains more than one fifth of the world's fresh water-- that's more than the Great Lakes of North America. Lake Baikal is quite large and quite remote, and due in part to its lack of visitors and its northerliness, it's a safe and protected home for countless unique species that frequent its crystal-clear waters and surrounding mountains.
13. Perth

Answer: Australia

The largest city in Western Australia, Perth sits on the Indian Ocean and was colonized in the early 19th century. Since then, it's grown substantially, becoming the regional capital despite being separated from the rest of the nation by quite vast expanses of desert to the north and east.

Although much of its early history revolved around the city being built around prisons, Perth grew because of the gold rush and, eventually, became a shipping and business hub in its own right.
14. The Outback

Answer: Australia

A colossal expanse of sparsely populated desert, the Australian Outback takes up most of the continent, creating a vast reach of nearly-empty plains with very few population centres. Although Australia is home to numerous cities and sights, the Outback is perhaps one of the most memorable features of the nation; much of its image and its culture is tied to this land.

Much of it is virtually untouched by humans.
15. Tasmania

Answer: Australia

The island state of Tasmania is the southernmost location in Australia, sitting just below the mainland of the continent. Separated from the rest of the nation by the Bass Strait, the capital, Hobart, is found at the south of the island in a deep water harbour on the River Derwent.

Although much of the coast of Tasmania is lowland, the landscape is quite rugged and densely forested with mountains rising up in its center. Its tallest peak, Mount Ossa, is right in the middle.
