Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What mountain range runs along the western United States and is home to Pike's Peak?

Answer: The Rockies

The Rocky Mountains are the newer of the two major mountain ranges in the United States. The range is over 3,000 miles long, running from British Columbia (in Canada) to New Mexico.
2. What mountain is a very prominent geographic feature outside of Tokyo, Japan?

Answer: Mount Fuji

Mt. Fuji is 12,388 feet tall and dominates the landscape west of Tokyo. Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world and is located in Nepal. Mt. McKinley is the tallest mountain in the United States and is located in Alaska. The Matterhorn adorns the European Alps.
3. Which of the following is not a body of water on Earth?

Answer: The Sea of Tranquility

Tranquility is actually the name of a "Sea" on the Moon. It's not actually a sea, just a large, relatively flat area.
4. What major body of water has historically been a huge point of contention in the Middle East, and separates Saudi Arabia from Iran?

Answer: The Persian Gulf

The Persian Gulf is a huge strategic landmark since much of the Middle East's oil is shipped out through this body of water. There is a major "chokepoint" where the Persian Gulf empties into the Arabian Sea called the Strait of Hormuz.
5. The historic Alamo is in what U.S. state?

Answer: Texas

The Alamo is located in San Antonio, Texas and was the site of a battle between Texas and Mexican forces. A few famous Americans died during the battle, such as Colonel William Travis, Davy Crockett, and Jim Bowie.
6. What is the world's largest hot desert? Hint -- it's in Africa.

Answer: The Sahara

The Sahara Desert is about the size of the United States. The only desert larger than the Sahara is Antarctica, but given its ridiculously cold temperatures, Antarctica can hardly call itself a hot desert.
7. What area contains the lowest elevation in the United States?

Answer: Death Valley

The lowest point in Death Valley is Badwater Basin at 282 feet below sea level. The average summer high tempurature is a scorching 116°F.
8. Which of the following is NOT one of the top five geographically largest countries in the world?

Answer: India

Russia is the largest, covering about 6,600,000 square miles, about twice the size of the next largest country, Canada. China and the United States are ranked 3 and 4, but due to some disputed territories nobody can agree on which one is 3 and which one is 4. Brazil is 5th, and India is 7th (behind Australia).
9. Which of the following countries does not border Afghanistan?

Answer: Russia

Iran borders Afghanistan on the west while Pakistan borders it on the south and east. There is a narrow strip of land through the mountains in the northeast of Afghanistan that connects with western China. The Soviet Union used to border Afghanistan, but the creation of the Central Asian Republics now provide a geographic buffer between Russia and Afghanistan.
10. What major river in South America is home to the carnivorous pirhana?

Answer: Amazon

The Amazon River is largest river by volume in the world and is only a few miles short from being the longest (the longest being the Nile River in Africa). The Amazon pumps so much fresh water into the Atlantic Ocean, that people can harvest fresh water from the ocean up to seven miles out from shore.
