Steven Schwartz wrote the beautiful lyrics for the Disney theme song for "Pocahontas". The composition was by the legendary Alan Menken. The lyrics speak of showing respect for our planet, the animals, the trees, and recognizing our place in the world. The song references the indigenous Native Americans who lived in America first and their major respect for the cycle of life on the planet. In the film, John Smith brought Eurocentric beliefs to America and the young Indian woman, Pocahontas, tried to explain her beliefs in how sacred they viewed the land through the song. The opening lyrics address this with the lines, "You think I'm an ignorant savage and you've been so many places. I guess it must be so, but still I cannot see, if the savage one is me."
The film was released in 1995 and starred the voices of Mel Gibson as John Smith, Christian Bale as Thomas, and Irene Benard as Pocahontas. In the film, the vocals on "Colors Of The Wind" was performed by Judy Kuhn. One of the most decorated songs in Disney's glorious history, the song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, and a Golden Globe.
Vanessa Williams recorded a version of the song that played during the closing credits. She released the ballad as a single in 1995 on her album "The Sweetest Days". It became a massive hit and reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. On the B-side of the single, Vanessa recorded a version of "Colors Of The Wind" in Spanish. The English version was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance but lost to Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You's".
