Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Prior to the release of "Devil Went Down To Georgia", the Charlie Daniels Band's signature song was the rebellious "Long Haired Country Boy". It was released in 1974 on their "Fire On The Mountain" album that also included the Southern Rock anthem, "The South's Gonna Do It Again". The lead single was a smash on country radio not only in the United States but also in Canada. It was backed with the B-side "Sweet Louisiana".
The lyrics on "Long Haired Country Boy" showcased the band's laid-back view of life and their love of the simple life popular in the U.S. South. During the Vietnam War era, long hair was often seen as "anti-war", rebellious to the establishment, and despised by the older generation. Charlie Daniels, the leader of the band, embraced that defiance while still maintaining a love for his country and his faith. The lyrics in "Long Haired Country Boy" reflected his belief in Jesus and not wanting to be judging for his outward appearance.
Charlie was a large man who was a master on the fiddle and well respected in the music business. After the release of "Devil Went Down To Georgia", the band re-released "Long Haired Country Boy" as a single to Country radio. Charlie, being a devout Christian, wished that he didn't include the opening lyrics about alcohol and drugs and in concert changed the lyrics. On stage, he'd sing "I get up in the morning, I get down in the afternoon." Interestingly, the song reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart in 1980, higher than it reached in 1975 (number 50 on the Singles chart).
