What do we make of Harry Potter?

Here at the Daily Prophet we've interviewed people regarding Harry Potter. There's a real mixed bag of opinions, but we forgot which quotes belong to which interviewee. Can you match the opinion to the character?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Potter? As arrogant as his father, and more interested in basking in his own fame and glory than getting out a textbook and studying.

Answer: Severus Snape

Snape comes across as having a very strong dislike of Harry even from the first time that they meet. He fiercely disliked James Potter (and his friends), who disliked him back just as much, and Harry witnesses his father's own behaviour towards Snape in a remembrall in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". This leads Snape to be doubly embarrassed and furious.

However, despite this, Snape had originally been a friend of Harry's mother, Lily Evans, and while they did not ultimately part on good terms, Snape works for Dumbledore and helps him to protect Harry at times out of his strong feelings for her. Snape's own actions while working for Voldemort leading to her death haunts him, and it does appear that his care for Lily outstrips his hatred for James: although others would not know this, given how he openly treats Harry with disdain at best and hatred at worst.
2. Harry Potter must learn not to tell such fanciful stories; I will of course ensure that he learns the importance of telling the truth as per my duty.

Answer: Dolores Umbridge

Dolores Umbridge becomes the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". She clashes with Harry quite quickly. She works for the Ministry of Magic, and does not appreciate Harry going around claiming that the Dark Lord is back, since the Ministry of Magic very much does not believe this and does not want a panic or the bad press. She gives Harry detentions where she uses a blood quill to make him write lines of "I must not tell lies", and this writing gets etched on the back of his hand as the blood quill uses Harry's own blood as ink to sink the lesson in.

She later becomes the Hogwarts High Inquisitor, which Hermione views as proof of the ministry's desire to interfere in Hogwarts, and enforces educational decrees. She views Harry as a persistent thorn in her side and the two never get along.
3. Potter rebuffed me on the Hogwarts Express, you know. Good thing, too, have you seen the riffraff he hangs around with? My father would be ashamed.

Answer: Draco Malfoy

Given how much they dislike each other later, it's interesting to remember that Draco Malfoy does originally offer his hand to Harry on the Hogwarts express. He offers to help Harry make friends with the right sort, to which Harry retorts that he thinks he can find the right sort for himself. They don't get along from that point, leading to occasions such as when Draco challenges Harry to a duel in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone".

They also become rivals in Quidditch when Draco becomes Slytherin's seeker, which may or may not be related to the fact that his father buys all of the Slytherin quidditch team new brooms. Draco is unhappy with Harry's choice of friends as Hermione is not a pureblood, and while Ron is, he's from a family who is not only poor but also sympathises with Muggles. Throughout the years, they continue to not get along, and Harry is often suspicious of Draco: he spends considerable time in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" following Draco around, suspicious of him.
4. Potter's the best seeker Hogwarts has ever seen, but he needs to ensure he shows up for Quidditch Practise on the dot! Crises can wait just fine until practise is over!

Answer: Oliver Wood

Oliver Wood is the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, and he seems to live and breathe Quidditch. After Professor McGonagall sees Harry's dive to catch Neville's remembrall to save Draco from destroying it, Harry is concerned that he's in trouble (he wonders if "Wood" is the cane), but actually she is recruiting him for the Quidditch team, and Wood is delighted.

There are various different quotes that encapsulate his love for Quidditch, for instance this one from "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban": "Told me I'd got my priorities wrong. Seemed to think I cared more about winning the Cup than I do about staying alive. Just because I told her I didn't care if it threw you off, as long as you caught the Snitch first." He greatly appreciates Harry's skill as a Quidditch player, but he is very eager to win.
5. Harry Potter? A nice enough boy, but he needs to learn how to publicise; he could capitalise on so much more. Witch Weekly would love him! Maybe I can put in a good word...

Answer: Gilderoy Lockhart

A contrast to Harry himself, Gilderoy Lockhart basks in his own fame and self-image. He seems to like Harry (or maybe just wants to be close to a celebrity), but Harry does not like him and finds him to be rather self-obsessed, setting quizzes on himself and making the books for his class all be his own books.

It is later revealed that Lockhart's real skill is actually the memory charm, and that he goes around taking credit for other people's deeds by interviewing them, then memory charming them to remove the memory and then writing a book as if he himself were the hero.

He gets a taste of his own medicine when he uses Ron's broken wand to attempt to cast a memory charm, and it backfires on himself. He bungles this so badly that he then ends up in St Mungo's, barely able to remember his own name.
6. Harry? He's my best mate, isn't he? My mum's practically adopted him as one of the family. I can still beat him in wizard's chess though!

Answer: Ron Weasley

Ron and Harry instantly become friends on the Hogwarts Express. Ron gets a chance to shine at the end of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" on the large wizard's chess puzzle that is protecting the philosopher's stone. His mother does instantly like him, and gives him presents such as making him a sweater as she does for all members of her family. There are times when Ron becomes jealous of Harry: this is particularly worsened by the locket in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", but it's also very noticeable in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", where he is angry when Harry is selected as a champion for Hogwarts (the fourth champion), in the spotlight yet again whereas Ron always gets overlooked.

Ron is still often loyal, however. The infamous line, "If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too!" actually comes from Ron, although interestingly in the film adaption of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" this line gets redistributed to Hermione.
7. Harry's a good boy, even comes and visits me at my hut with his friends and has some rock cakes. Fang even likes him too, and he's an excellent judge of character.

Answer: Rubeus Hagrid

Harry regards Hagrid as his first friend - they meet when Hagrid delivers his Hogwarts letter, so prior to his acquaintance with Ron and Hermione. Hagrid is clearly very fond of Harry, even inviting him to visit. It probably doesn't hurt that he clearly doesn't like the Dursleys, who generally try and have a pristine image with everyone else, so it's nice for Harry to see somebody else who disregards them. Hagrid trusts Harry enough that he even tells them about how he got his dragon egg. Later, Hagrid is delighted when he becomes Care of Magical Creatures professor and has Harry, Ron and Hermione in his class.
8. I was very excited to meet Harry Potter. I'd done extensive reading and he's in so many books! We didn't get along at first, but he's very brave and we've solved many mysteries together. If only he'd do his homework...

Answer: Hermione Granger

One of the first things that Hermione says on meeting Harry is to tell him that she's read about him. Hermione doesn't initially get along with Harry and Ron: they find her attitude overbearing and her to be a bit of a know-it-all, and she finds them rude.

However, following Ron and Harry rescuing her from a troll in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", they become firm friends. Hermione's knowledge is often invaluable for many situations they find themselves in. She is loyal and conscientious, believing strongly in house elf welfare and preaching about this to Harry and Ron.

She also keeps promoting SPEW (Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare) and wants house elves to all be set free.
9. A complete nuisance. How anybody could describe him as my equal is absurd; thus far he has survived on dumb luck. No longer...

Answer: Lord Voldemort

Lord Voldemort is an enemy of Harry Potter, having decided to kill him as a baby due to a half-heard prophecy, and in doing so he marks Harry as his equal. Interestingly, the prophecy would not necessarily have referred to Harry exclusively. Another option would have been Neville Longbottom, but Voldemort chooses the child like himself (a half-blood, not a pureblood) and the rest is history. Harry defeats Voldemort on multiple occasions: due to the power of his mother's love, according to Voldemort - on this occasion Harry did not know why he was hurting Quirrel/Voldemort but he was quick enough on the uptake to use it to his advantage. He also defeats the version of Tom Riddle trapped in his own diary (which he later learns was a Horcrux).

In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", though, Voldemort gets resurrected and Harry is used as part of this ritual. Harry manages to escape this encounter by summoning the Triward Cup, a portkey, so while he escapes with his life it's a very hollow victory, as not only has the Dark Lord survived but also another boy has died, Cedric Diggory. The battle at the Department of Mysteries also gets interrupted, by Dumbledore: as far as Voldemort is concerned, he's never been truly bested, merely a victim of bad luck and circumstance.
10. James would be very proud of Harry. He's courageous, seeking me out to fight his fears (literally!). Not only did he inherit James' spirit, but also our map: a perfect legacy, I would say.

Answer: Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin is first introduced saving Harry from dementors on the Hogwarts express, which is a positive sign of his competence when he's revealed to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor for the year, given the issues with Lockhart the previous year. He was a friend of Harry's father and a Marauder (along with James, Sirius and Peter), having made the Marauder's Map and having used it to sneak around Hogwarts as children. Harry likes him, and after a boggart lesson where Harry feels he was deliberately not allowed a turn, he turns to Lupin and asks for help fighting his own fears. Lupin had been afraid that an image of Lord Voldemort would appear in the classroom, but Harry feels that the dementors were in fact scarier: they make Harry pass out and remember his parent's murder. Lupin feels this is wise as in fearing a dementor he is actually fearing the concept of fear itself, and he agrees to teach Harry how to fight against dementors.

As the name may suggest, Lupin is actually a werewolf, and Harry's father and friends knew his secret and in turn secretly became animagus to keep him company on lonely full moon nights. Harry is still fond of Lupin after he learns this, however it does end up losing Lupin his job when it becomes common knowledge.
