Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Magnus Chase is already mentioned in "The Blood of Olympus", though not by name. But in "The Sword of Summer" we actually learn that he is the cousin of which character from the Heroes of Olympus series?

Answer: Annabeth

Annabeth mentions an uncle and cousin in Boston but adds that she doesn't see them anymore because her father and uncle did not get along. In "The Sword of Summer", we learn that that cousin is Magnus, and Annabeth and her father even have a guest appearance in the book.
2. Like so many other characters in Rick Riordan books, Magnus Chase is a demigod. Who is his non-human parent?

Answer: Frey

Magnus is the son of Frey, god of peace, fertility, wealth, rain, summer, and sunshine.
3. One of Magnus's most important allies (and friends) is his Valkyrie, who takes him to Valhalla. What is her name?

Answer: Samirah

Brave and loyal, Samirah al-Abbas is a daughter of Loki and became a Valkyrie at fourteen, when she single-handedly defeated a frost giant at her school. She is a practicing Muslim and engaged to Amir.
4. Magnus's friends and fellow homeless companions Blitz and Hearth turn out to be what?

Answer: A demigod/dwarf and an elf

Blitz, or Blitzen, is the son of the goddess Freya and the dwarf Bili. Hearth, or Hearthstone, is an elf. Hearth is deaf, which is why both Blitzen and Magnus are fluent in sign language in order to communicate.
5. At the Hotel Valhalla, Magnus meets his fellow Einherjar (warriors training for Ragnarök) and quickly makes friends with his hallmates. Who of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Ratatosk

Ratatosk is the giant squirrel who scurries up and down Yggdrasil.
6. The first Magnus Chase book is called "The Sword of Summer". What is the name of that sword?

Answer: Both

The sword is traditionally called "Sumbrander" but is renamed "Jack" by Magnus. Jack has the ability to talk, and takes the form of a pendant with the rune of Frey when at rest.
7. Magnus meets, and eventually falls in love with, Alex, another Einherji and the child of Loki. What is special about Alex?

Answer: Alex is genderfluid

Magnus first develops a crush on Alex presenting as a girl, but he quickly accepts Alex's gender fluidity. They have their first kiss in the third book with a female Alex but reaffirm their relationship near the end of the book while Alex is presenting as a boy.
8. Does Magnus Chase ever get to meet Percy Jackson?

Answer: Yes

At the end of the second book, "The Hammer of Thor", Annabeth tells Magnus it is time he met her boyfriend. The third book, "The Ship of the Dead", opens with Percy and Magnus training on the USS Constitution.
9. In the third book, Magnus defeats Loki during a ritual called "flyting", which results in Loki doing what?

Answer: shrinking

A flyting is a trading of insults, and after it first looks as if Magnus is losing, he wins eventually by pointing out the individual strengths of all his friends (such as Samirah saving the world and fighting monsters while fasting for Ramadan) and making Loki realize he is utterly alone. Loki is imprisoned in a walnut shell.
10. At the end of the third book, Magnus turns the Chase mansion into The Chase Space, which is what?

Answer: A shelter for homeless youth

Magnus and Alex take care of the kids, and Blitzen and Hearth are in charge of the kitchen.
