In the earliest days of movies, watching a film was a very different experience from going to the cinema today. Most early films were silent, and audiences sometimes watched them through machines designed for just one person at a time. As movies became more popular, inventors developed ways to project moving images onto large screens so that entire crowds could watch together. Since films didn't have recorded dialogue, musicians often played pianos or organs to provide background music. Some even used special instruments to create sound effects, such as footsteps, thunder, or galloping horses. By the late 1920s, movies with synchronized speech and sound had become a major attraction. These films were nicknamed "talkies," and they helped transform the movie industry into the entertainment giant we know today.
