Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All singers are happy to have a tune make it onto the Billboard Hot 100. To make it to Number One on that chart is even more rewarding. In 2005, a popular artist closed out the year with the number one hit "Don't Forget About Us". Can you name the sweet songstress who had the number one hit to end 2005 and also begin 2006?

Answer: Mariah Carey

Between 1990-2012, Mariah Carey recorded over 60 singles. Fifteen of those made it to Number One on the Billboard Hot 100, the first one being "Vision of Love" in 1991. Mariah Carey is a native of Long Island, New York, where she was born in the town of Huntington on March 27, 1969.*

*Some sources claim she was born in 1970, but most (including Mariah) agree it was 1969.
2. In 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the N.Y. Yankees four games to three to win their one and only World Series championship. The final out of game seven came when Elston Howard's groundball was hit to the Dodger's shortstop and captain who wore uniform number one. Who was the longtime Brooklyn favorite nicknamed "The Little Colonel"?

Answer: Pee Wee Reese

Born just down the road a piece from Louisville, Kentucky, Harold "Pee Wee" Reese was the heart and soul of "The Boys of Summer", as the Dodger teams of that era came to be known. Prior to their 1955 conquest of their crosstown rivals, the Brooks had lost all five previous World Series meetings to the mighty "Bronx Bombers". The losses were in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952 and 1953. Reese was a member of the last four, but 1955 wiped all those defeats from the minds of deliriously loyal, long-suffering Dodger fans. A ten time All-Star, Pee Wee Reese was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984, and passed away August 14, 1999 at the age of 81.

Interesting fact: Harold Reese acquired his nickname of "Pee Wee" not because of his diminutive size, but rather for his skill as a championship marbles player as a youth.
3. Over the past century plus, there have been hundreds of movies that qualify to be called box-office blockbusters. Only one film can be number one in any given time period however. According to the list compiled by the International Movie Database (IMDb) in 2013, what was the top grossing film of the 20th century in the US box office?

Answer: Titanic

The number one box-office king of the 20th century was "Titanic", the tale of the sinking of the "unsinkable" ship on its maiden voyage in April, 1912. The film was directed by James Cameron and starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. "Titanic", which recounted the death of 1,500 souls who had been aboard the luxury liner, won eleven Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director.

The iconic "Star Wars" (1977) was number six on the same list. "E.T." (with seven year old Drew Barrymore) came home at number nine on IMDb's list, published in 2013. "Forrest Gump", which was 29th on the list, saw Tom Hanks (Best Leading Actor) and Robert Zemeckis (Best Director) take home Oscars.
4. On March 13, 2013, Pope Francis became the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic church. Born Jorge Bergoglio in Argentina, he became the first pope to have been born in South America and the third pope of the 21st century. Name the first pope to begin his Papacy in the 20th century.

Answer: Pope Pius X

Pope Pius X was chronologically the 257th pope. He was born Giuseppe Sarto, and served as the Holy Father from August 4, 1903-August 20, 1914.

Pope Nicholas V was one of the earlier Holy Fathers. His papacy was from March 6, 1447-March 24, 1455. Born Tommaso Parentucelli, he was the 208th pope.

Pope Leo XIII was the 256th pope and the last to start his papacy in the 19th century. He was born Gioacchino Pecci and was the "Bishop of Rome" from February 20, 1878- July 20, 1903.

Pope Benedict XV was Pius X's successor and the 258th pope. His birth name was Giacomo Della Chiesa, and his term as the leader of the world's Catholics ran from September 3, 1914-January 27, 1922.

Interesting fact: Several popes have been murdered, including the very first, St. Peter. He was crucified upside-down (circa 67). Over a dozen others are alleged to have been killed, but conclusive proof has not been found.
5. "One" is one of the bouncier numbers from a hit Broadway show which opened on the Great White Way, July 25, 1975 at the Shubert Theatre. The musical continued its run on Broadway until April 28, 1990. "One" was written by composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Edward Kleban. What was the name of the show that brought us "One", and also won nine Tony awards?

Answer: A Chorus Line

"A Chorus Line" is both a heartwarming and heartbreaking story of 17 hoofers competing for seven spots in a musical show. As they are put through their paces, they are eliminated one-by-one until the lucky seven are chosen. When "A Chorus Line" ended its run of 6,137 performances, it became the longest running Broadway show in history at the time.

A couple of other popular tunes from the show were: "Dance: Ten; Looks: Three" and "What I Did for Love". There are a lot of great songs in "A Chorus Line", here is part of "ONE":

"One singular sensation, every little step she takes
One thrilling combination, every move that she makes
One smile and suddenly nobody else will do
You know you'll never be lonely with you-know-who

One moment in her presence and you can forget the rest
For the girl is second best to none, son
Oooh! Sigh! Give her your attention
Do I really have to mention, she's the one"

Interesting facts: "A Chorus Line" also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (1976).

At the time of his death (August 6, 2012), Marvin Hamlisch was one of only eleven people to have won an Emmy, Oscar, Tony and Grammy Award.
6. A list that nobody wanted to be ranked Number One on was "Mr. Blackwell's Worst Dressed List". From 1960-1994 the roster was compiled by former child actor, journalist, and fashion critic "Mr. Blackwell" (born Richard Selzer). Nobody really took it too seriously (except, perhaps, Mr. Blackwell), and everyone was fair game. In fact, his final "victim" in 1994 was Camilla Parker-Bowles! Which international star had the dubious honor of being named the first frighteningly fashioned female on the initial "Mr. Blackwell's Worst Dressed List"?

Answer: Anna Magnani

The dastardly Mr. Blackwell referred to the Academy Award winning actress as looking like "the female counterpart of Emmett Kelly" on his first list, published in 1960*. Since Kelly was a circus clown noted for his outlandish garb, that was a bit mean-spirited, wouldn't you say? Ms. Magnani won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the widowed Serafina Delle Rose in "The Rose Tattoo (1955), which also featured Burt Lancaster. Ms. Gabor, a former Ms. Hungary, was the only person to get nailed in consecutive years, as Richard Blackwell had her at the top of the list in 1962-1963. Best Actress Oscar winner Julie Andrews ("Mary Poppins", 1964) was chosen as the most grotesquely garbed gal in 1968. The classy Sophia Loren, who won the Best Actress Oscar for "Two Women" (1960), was Mr. B's. choice for the most disastrously dressed damsel in 1970.

"Mr. Blackwell" died October 19, 2008. To my knowledge there are no reports about what he was wearing at the time of his burial.

*The quotation is from "Mr. Blackwell, An Autobiography" (1995).
7. Each year, countless awards are given around the world to thousands of people, animals, organizations and more. A movie wins an Oscar, a dog wins best in show, and a team wins the Vince Lombardi Trophy for winning the Super Bowl in American football, for example. And then there is the Nobel Peace Prize, which was first awarded in 1901. The first two awards were given to a brace of people in both 1901 and 1902. Who was the first single individual to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1903?

Answer: William Cremer

William Cremer was known for attempting to avoid wars around the globe through arbitration. He was, in fact, Secretary of the International Arbitration League. While he was a member of the U.K. Parliament he was nick-named "The Member of Arbitration". In 1907, Wiliam Cremer was knighted by King Edward VII.

Walter Hauser was President of the Swiss Confederation at the turn of the 20th century.

Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, would win the prestigious award in 1906.

Swiss journalist and businessman Elie Ducommun shared the second Nobel Peace Prize with fellow Swede Charles Gobat, an attorney and politician in 1902.

Some Nobel Prize trivia:
Eighteen times during the 20th century no prize was awarded, mostly during wartimes. The Red Cross won The Nobel Peace Prize three times (1917, 1944, and 1963). The Nobel Prizes, named in honor of Swedish inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel, originally awarded prizes in five categories. They were Medicine, Literature, Physics, Chemistry and Peace. In 1968, a sixth award for Economic Sciences was added.
8. "Forbes" magazine, which covers the world of business and finance, published its first issue in 1917. Each year the bi-weekly magazine reveals its list of The World's Richest People. In 2000, whom did they name as the wealthiest of the wealthy?

Answer: Bill Gates

Bill Gates of Microsoft Corporation fame took the top spot. He was also number one in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009.

Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim was the richest in 2010, and he was also the top banana in 2011, 2012 and 2013, according to "Forbes".

Warren Buffet of Berkshire Hathaway came in fourth in 2000. He was the 2008's list topper.

Real estate, hotel and business tycoon Donald Trump failed to crack the top ten on the 2000 list. ("The Donald" may not have always had the most money but he always had the most hair!)
9. Just about everyone has a hobby. Some people collect coins or stamps or even baseball cards. Zsa Zsa Gabor seems to have selected collecting husbands as her field of interest. When she married Frederick Prince von Anhalt on August 12, 1986, he became hubby number nine. Her first marriage occurred almost 50 years earlier in 1937. Who was Zsa Zsa's first spouse?

Answer: Burhan Belge

The union of Ms. Gabor and the young Turk lasted from 1937-1941. Hotel magnate Conrad Hilton was next, spending 1942-1947 in wedded bliss with Zsa Zsa. She took a year off from marriage in 1948, and then added actor George Sanders to her collection in 1949, perhaps hoping the third time would be the charm. Alas, they divorced five years later.

Her marriage to Michael O'Hara lasted eight years (1976-1983). By the way, her briefest period as a newlywed lasted somewhere in the vicinity of 24 hours, when after swapping vows on April 13, 1983 to remain married "for as long as they both shall live", Ms. Gabor had her marriage to Mexican lawyer and small-time actor Felipe de Alba annulled the next day.
10. The United Nations is one of the most important organizations in the world. It was established in 1945, and its main headquarters overlook the East River in New York City. The presiding officer of the U.N. is known as the Secretary General. Throughout the 20th century, seven men have held that position. Which statesman was the first Secretary General of the United Nations?

Answer: Trygve Lie

The U.N. had over fifty member states when it was founded in June 1945. That number swelled to more than 190 by 2012, and as a result the U.N. established several different official languages, including Arabic, English, French, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish. In addition to the main headquarters in N.Y., the U.N. also maintains regional headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, Nairobi, Kenya and Vienna, Austria. The U.N. headquarters in N.Y. are made up of four main areas: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and the Secretariat. The main judicial branch, known as the International Court of Justice, is situated in the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands.

Norwegian Trygve Lie served from 1946 until his resignation in 1952.

Dag Hammarskjold of Sweden was the second to hold the office (1953-1961).*

Burmese diplomat U Thant followed Hammarskjold, and served from 1961-1971.

Egyptian Boutros Boutros Ghali was the sixth United Nations Secretary General, serving from 1992-1996.

The other 20th century Secretary Generals were Austrian Kurt Waldheim (1972-1981) and Peruvian Javier Perez de Cuellar (1982-1991).

*Dag Hammarskjold was the first U.N. Secretary General to die while holding office. He was killed in a plane crash in 1961, while on a peacekeeping mission, and was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1961.
