Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ten to the power of what number is equal to one? or 10^?=1

Answer: Zero

ANY number to the power of zero equals one. Here are two proofs that show it:

#1 - Follow the pattern

10^5 ... 10^4 ... 10^3 ... 10^2 ... 10^1 ... 10^0

100000 (/10=) 10000 (/10=) 1000 (/10=) 100 (/10=) 10 (/10=) 1

#2 - Check the math

10^3 x 10^0 = 10^(3+0) = 10^3

Therefore 10^0 must equal 1.
2. Nine Nazgūl were sent out by Sauron to find the One ___ in J.R.R. Tolkien's story. The One what?

Answer: Ring

'Nazgūl', in Tolkien's created Black Speech, was a word formed of two parts: 'nazg', meaning 'ring'; and 'gūl', meaning 'wraith' or 'spirit'. Thus, the villainous creatures from "The Lord of the Rings" were also appropriately known as Ringwraiths.

The Nazgūl were originally nine kings (men) who had been given rings of power by Sauron, who then used his One Ring (to rule them all) to bend them to his will, transforming them into the Nazgūl in the process.
3. Eight-ball is a game of pool where each player tries to sink his designated set of seven numbered and coloured balls (solids 1-7, stripes 9-15) first, and then win the game by pocketing the eight-ball (solid black). What colour is the one-ball?

Answer: Yellow

Each set of seven balls has the same sequence of colours:

One / nine-ball (yellow);
Two / ten-ball (blue);
Three / eleven-ball (red);
Four / twelve-ball (purple);
Five / thirteen-ball (orange);
Six / fourteen-ball (green); and
Seven / fifteen-ball (maroon).
4. Seven Man-made Wonders there were in the Ancient World, but only one exists in the modern day. Where is it located?

Answer: Giza, Egypt

The one remaining Wonder of the Ancient World is the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt. Egyptologists believe that it was built as a tomb for the Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), who died in the year 2566 BCE. It was the first of the Wonders built, and was the tallest structure in the world (146.4 m or 480 ft) for approximately four millennia--until St. Olaf's Church in Tailinn, Estonia had a tower built that reached to 159 m (521 ft) in 1590.

The other Wonders were:

Hanging Gardens of Babylon (present-day Iraq near Al Hillah)
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (present-day Turkey near Selēuk)
Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (present-day Bodrum, Turkey)
Colossus of Rhodes, Greece
Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt
5. Six days was what it took for God to create the heavens and the earth, according to Genesis 1. What did God create on day number one?

Answer: Light (day and night)

Genesis 1:3-5 states "3 And God said, 'Let there be light', and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light 'day', and the darkness he called 'night'. And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day."

According to the rest of the biblical creation story, God separated the waters on day two (the sky); made land and seas on day three; along with vegetation, the sun, moon and stars came on day four; birds and creatures of the sea were on day five; while land animals (including Adam and Eve) were created on the sixth day.
6. Five Alive, the original citrus drink from Minute Maid, had which fruit in the number one spot in the list of five fruits blended together?

Answer: Orange

Minute Maid was formed as a company in 1945 and was bought by Coca-Cola in 1960.

In order (as listed in the ingredients and shown visually on packaging), the five citrus fruits in Five Alive are orange, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, and lime. The drink first hit the shelves in 1981, and has since expanded to include other fruits in its clique:

Berry (apple, blackcurrant, grape, raspberry, strawberry);
Tropical (orange, apricot, guava, mango, passionfruit);
Apple (apple 30%, grape 2.5%, pear 1%, kiwi fruit 1%, lemon 0.5%).

7. Four languages listed, but only one of the answers actually translates as 'one'. Which one?

Answer: Jeden (Czech)

Jeden, dvě, tři, čtyři, pět, sest, sedm, osm, devět, deset.

Czech is a Slavic Indo-European language in the same family as Slovak, Polish and Sorbian. Until the late 1800s it was commonly referred to (in English) as Bohemian.

Each of the other options was that language's translation of the number 'ten'.
8. Three Dog Night agreed with Harry Nilsson's idea about the number one. What was it?

Answer: One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do.

Harry Nilsson wrote "One", originally releasing it on his 1968 album "Aerial Ballet". It was subsequently covered by Al Kooper that same year on his debut album "I Stand Alone", before Three Dog Night brought their version to number five on the charts in 1969, releasing it with their debut album "Three Dog Night". Australian singer Johnny Farnham also covered it in 1969, releasing it as a single, then on his 1970 album "Looking Through a Tear".

The Beatles explained that "one and one and one is three" in their song "Come Together" from 1969's "Abbey Road".

"One Thing Leads to Another" is the title of (and a line in) The Fixx's song from their 1983 album "Reach the Beach".

British duo Pet Shop Boys insisted that "One and One Make Five" on their 1993 album "Very" (or "Very Relentless").
9. Two of these, according to the idiom, are better than one.

Answer: Heads

The phrase "two heads are better than one" was first 'said' by John Heywood in "A dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe tongue, 1546". In its original old English:

"Some heades haue taken two headis better then one:
But ten heads without wit, I wene as good none."

I will blatantly steal this 'biography' of Terry from his 2012 profile page:

"Terry is the founder, creator, and webmaster of FunTrivia. He can be found running around the site, fixing problems as they arise. He particularly enjoys taking history and science quizzes".
