Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. HUMANITIES: Which Broadway musical does the title of this quiz, "One singular sensation," come from?

Answer: A Chorus Line

"A Chorus Line" first opened on Broadway on July 25, 1975. The story takes place mainly on an audition of a chorus line on a stage, with Zach, the director, asking questions about their lives. The characters are primarily based on the lives of actual Broadway dancers.

"One" is a big number from the show they are auditioning for. There are just eight left, but then Paul is injured, and they talk about what they would do if they can't dance. Diana, with the others, sings "What I Did for Love."

Then "One" is reprised again, with all the dancers now in top hats and looking glamorous. The first lines in the song say, "One, singular sensation. Every little step he takes."
2. CELEBRITIES: Some celebrities are known only by one name (eg, Madonna, Cher). What is this called?

Answer: Mononym

Usually, a mononym is the person's first name and no surname. Many celebrities today, such as the two mentioned in the question, Madonna and Cher, do this. However, it has always been done, such as the artist Michelangelo.

A person who only uses one name is called a mononymous person. Mono = one; onym = name.

Madonna's last name is Ciccone. Cher's last name is Sarkisian (at birth - she also used Bono and Allman).

Michelangelo's last name was Simoni.
3. HOBBIES: In the card game Uno (Spanish for one), what must you do if you fail to say "Uno" when you have only one card in your hand?

Answer: Pick up two cards

The game of Uno was invented in 1971 by a barber named Merle Robbins. He was fighting with his family over a game of Crazy Eights, and invented Uno to settle the fight over the rules.

You only have to draw Uno if a player notices you only have one card before the next player's turn.

Since then, other versions have been made, such as Uno Attack and Harry Potter Uno.
4. FOR CHILDREN: If you multiply any number by 1, you get the same number. What is this property of multiplication called?

Answer: Identity

The identity property of multiplication is named because the number being multiplied by 1 keeps its identity. Knowing this property helps when you are learning how to multiply because you will know any factor when multiplied by 1, whether 1 x 1 = 1 or 35583 x 1 = 35583.
5. GEOGRAPHY: There is a town in South Australia with the same name as a TV show that starred Chad Michael Murray. What is the name of the town?

Answer: One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill, South Australia, got its name from the One Tree Hill Inn, where the District Council of Munno Para East would meet for years. The inn got its name from one giant red gum tree at the intersection between Black Top Road and Walters Road. The tree was destroyed by fire, and then cut down, and has since been replaced by five trees.

The town is very small with under 1000 people living there.
6. HISTORY: World War I officially ended on what day?

Answer: November 11, 1918

Not only did WWI have the number '1' in its name, but it also contains four ones in the date 11/11/1918 (six if you count the two in the year as well). The United States celebrates Veterans' Day (formally called Armistice Day) in honor of when the war ended. Not only did the war end on November 11th, but it also occurred at 11:00 AM. This gives us two more ones.
7. LITERATURE: Who wrote the book "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"?

Answer: Ken Kesey

Ken Kesey was born on September 17, 1935, in La Junta, Colorado, USA, but grew up in Springfield, Oregon, USA. He started writing "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1960 after he finished a graduate fellowship at Stanford University. It was first published in 1962 and became an instant success.

The book takes place in an Oregon psychiatric hospital. It is narrated by Chief Bromden, who presents as a dead, mute, docile half-Native American. The story mainly focuses on Randle Patrick Murphy, who fakes insanity to get out of a prison sentence of doing farm work. The institution is run by Nurse Ratched, a no-nonsense nurse who rules with authority. McMurphy and Ratched do not get along at all. The issue escalates until McMurphy attacks her, and as a result, he receives a lobotomy.

Kesey interviewed patients and observed institutions for his research. He also worked the graveyard shift at an institution, took psychotropic drugs such as LSD as part of Project MKUltra, and advocated for drug use as a part of human freedom.
8. MOVIE: Who did Robin Williams play in the movie "One Hour Photo"?

Answer: Seymour Parrish

Mark Romanek directed "One Hour Photo" (2002). Robin Williams played Seymour ("Sy") Parrish. Seymour was a photo technician who became obsessed with a family whose pictures he developed. The movie, a psychological thriller, involves Sy having photos of the family all over his home because he copied them. Sy has no friends or any family of his own.

The store manager is audited and discovers that a lot more pictures were printed than what were sold at SavMart. Sy is fired, but allowed to finish the week out. During this time, he discovers that Will Yorkin (the husband in the family) is having an affair. He is crushed that his ideal family is destroyed.

He eventually confronts Yorkin with his mistress in a hotel. The police come after him, and he escapes, and the couple is left unharmed. Sy's defense is, "I just took pictures."
9. MUSIC: According to the song by Harry Nilsson, what is "one"?

Answer: the loneliest number

"One" was written and performed by Harry Nilsson in 1968. Although the official title is "One," it is often called "One is the Loneliest Number," a reference to the first line of the song.

The song is better known for its cover version by Three Dog Night, which reached number five on the charts in 1969.

Johnny Farnham, Filter, and Aimee Mann are some of the other performers who have also covered the song.
10. SPORTS: The New York Yankees retired the number 1 in 1986. Who wore the number 1 for the Yankees?

Answer: Billy Martin

Alfred Manuel "Billy" Martin Jr was born on May 16, 1928, in Berkeley, California. He was signed by the Pacific Coast League Oakland Oaks, a minor league team, where he worked under Casey Stengel. Stengel would also manage him when he moved up to the majors with the New York Yankees.

During his time with the Yankees from 1950-1957 (minus almost two years between 1953-1955 when he was drafted by the Army), the Yankees won five World Series (he was there for four of them; they won in 1957, but he was already traded to Kansas City). He then played with the Kansas City Athletics, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Braves, and Minnesota Twins before retiring from playing in 1961.

From 1965 to 1968, he coached with the Minnesota Twins.

Then he managed the Twins in 1969. He also managed the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, and then back to the New York Yankees, where he retired from baseball completely in 1988. While managing the Yankees, he earned another World Series ring in 1977.

George Steinbrenner fired Martin in 1988 due to a number of factors, including his fighting. He continued to work as a special consultant to Steinbrenner until his death, however.

On December 25, 1989, Martin was killed in a single-vehicle car accident. The details of the accident are disputed.

In 1986, Billy Martin's number 1 was retired by the New York Yankees.
