One of the best known usages of Eve is as the name of the first woman from the creation account that is set out in the biblical book, . In the second chapter of this book, it is written that "became a living soul" when God formed him from and breathed into him the "breath of life". Eve was created from the that God "had taken from man".

Beyond the name's religious significance, Eve is a name that pops up in the field of cryptography to represent one who eavesdrops on Alice and , the conventional names for two people trying to exchange information privately. Whilst Eve is passively eavesdropping, the malicious is a more active agent.

The name has been used often in film, be it in the Oscar-winning 'All About Eve' (1950) starring as Eve and as Margo, or as a capitalised name for a from the animated Disney Pixar offering, (2008).

Eve can be used as both a first name and surname, the former being the case for a curler from , Eve Muirhead, and a famous actress from , Eve Arden. Sporting Eve as a surname is a British actor with the forename ; he is perhaps best known for his long-term role in the television series, (2000 - 2011).

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Eve (Religion)

The creation of the first man (Adam) and the first woman (Eve) is set out in Genesis; in the case of Adam the moment of creation is outlined in Genesis 2:7 ("And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul") whilst the creation of Eve is described in Genesis 2:22 ("And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man"). The first use of the name Eve is in Genesis 2:20, "And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living".

The Hebrew name for Eve is Chawah. The first female is not named in the Islamic Qu'ran but there is reference to the name Hawwa (similar in sound to Chawah) in hadiths (reports or accounts).

Eve (Science & Technology)

Whilst cryptography is a rather serious field of study, it does have a whimsical side. How data and information is encrypted, exchanged, decrypted and intercepted (or a large number of other related processes) is often taught through an anthropomorphised approach where the cast of people involved in a given information network are all given names and personalities.

A cryptographic system tends to begin with two people, Alice (rather than person or point A) and Bob (rather than person or point B), who wish to privately exchange a piece of data or information. Life is not however quite so simple and other people like to get themselves involved, whether it be Eve the eavesdropper (passively listening in or reading the contents of a message but not altering it), the malicious Mallory (he won't think twice about modifying or destroying the message contents) or Trudy the intruder!

There are many others but one I find particularly amusing is Grace, someone from the government who thinks that the creation of a back door into a cryptographic system is an excellent idea (sigh).

Eve (Movies)

Lending its name to this quiz is 'All About Eve', a film of 1950 directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz that won the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director alongside four other awards at the 1951 ceremony that was hosted by Fred Astaire. The plot of the film itself follows the intriguing - and rocky - relationship between the aging star, Margo Channing (Bette Davis), and the ambitious aspiring actress, Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter).

The story deploys a variant of the fruitful trope of established figure or incumbent - who does what they must to retain their position (sometimes staying in place beyond their time) - meets aspirant or potential successor who uses fair means or foul to take the place of the incumbent (sometimes before they are ready).

Disney Pixar's release of 2008, 'WALL-E', portrays a 29th century world as being a literal garbage heap with robots tasked with cleaning up the planet (which was evacuated by humans many centuries earlier). WALL-E is the last functioning robot performing this role and - in the best tradition of science fiction - has developed something of a personality. Another robot, EVE, is sent down to Earth to determine if any life is present and the remainder of the film follows the interaction between the two.

Eve (People)

Scotland has a long and proud history when it comes to curling, a winter sport that is sometimes referred to as "chess on ice". The aim of the sport is to sweep stones along a sheet of ice and get as close to the centre of the house (a series of concentric rings) as possible. Despite curling featuring at the inaugural Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France in 1924, the sport was absent from the Olympics for many decades. It was only at Nagano 1998 that the sport became an official part of the programme.

Great Britain (or should we say, Scotland) has been a dominant force in the sport alongside Canada, Switzerland and the Scandinavian nations, particularly in the women's game. Eve Muirhead was the captain (skip) of the Great Britain women's team at multiple Olympics and played a crucial role in successfully obtaining a bronze medal for the country in Sochi 2014 and a gold medal at Beijing 2022.

Another famous Eve is Eve Arden, an actress who was born in California in 1908 as Eunice Mary Quedens. Her stage name of Eve is said to have been inspired by a perfume called Evening in Paris (with her surname of Arden deriving from the name of the cosmetics giant, Elizabeth Arden).

Eve is also a common surname and an example of this is Trevor Eve, an Olivier award-winning actor born in Birmingham, England in 1951. Trevor Eve starred in 'Waking the Dead' as Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd, a character who headed up a unit that comprised detectives, psychological profilers and forensic scientists. As this quiz is all about Eve, it would be fitting to note that the name of the forensic scientist throughout the final four series of the show (series 6 - 9) was Eve Lockhart (played by Tara Fitzgerald).
