Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The Binney & Smith Company was founded in 1885 and launched their Crayola brand of crayons in 1903. The Binney & Smith Company would later change its name to Crayola LLC in 2007.

At first, the company sold packages containing only eight simple colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown and black). As the popularity of Crayola crayons grew in the early years, Binney & Smith would release more colours, with many receiving multi-word names. By 1905, the company had 38 different colours packaged in various sized boxes.

Crayola had three different shades of Venetian Red (1) by 1905 (Light Venetian Red, Dark Venetian Red and the original shade). However, both the light and dark versions were discontinued in 1910. The original Venetian Red would later be discontinued in 1949.

The name Charcoal Grey (2) would be discontinued in 1910 and the name English Vermilion (3) would be discontinued in 1935.

Gold Ochre (aka Golden Ochre) (4) would later be renamed as the colour Maize from 1958 until its retirement in 1990. Gold Ochre would make a brief comeback as a limited edition colour in 2003.

Raw Umber (5) would be discontinued in 1990, but was later released as a limited edition colour in 2003 and 2025.

Prussian Blue (6) would have its name changed to Midnight Blue in 1958.

Rose Pink (7) was also sold as simply Pink up until 1917 and in 1958, Crayola changed the name of the colour to Carnation Pink.

Crayola uses both Permanent Magenta (8) and simply Magenta to refer to the same colour. Permanent Magenta, Olive Green (9) and Burnt Sienna (10) continue to be produced by Crayola as of May, 2025.

The names Skin Flesh and Leather Black I pulled from the "Strong Bad Email" web cartoon titled "coloring".

The last four colour names (Blizzard White, Banana Yellow, Pumpkin Orange and Stone Silver) were not among Crayola's original selection. However, who knows what names could appear as a Crayola crayon in the future.
