Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name Crayola crayons uses for its line of fragrant crayons?

Answer: Magic Scent

Magic Scent crayons are just regular crayons but with some unusual fragrances added. For example, black smells like a leather jacket, brown smells like dirt, and gray smells like smoke. I guess this is supposed to be more fun than scribbling on the wall and listening to mom yell!
2. In which city will you find the Crayola Crayon Factory?

Answer: Easton, Pennsylvania

Crayola started producing crayons in 1903 in Easton, Pennsylvania. They were made specifically for children to play with and were non-toxic. The original "recipe" for crayons has changed very little over the 100 years.
3. The number one ingredient in most crayons is which of the following?

Answer: paraffin wax

Paraffin wax has been used as the main ingredient since the invention of the crayon in 1903. This is a petroleum based product not a natural wax such as beeswax. Very small amounts of additives are also present. They are used for coloring, fragrance, and as mixing or stabilizing agents.
4. What can you find in a 64-count box of Crayola crayons, that is not found in other size boxes?

Answer: crayon sharpener

The 64-count box comes with a built-in crayon sharpener. It is built into the side of the box and operates similar to a small pencil sharpener. This was added because it became common knowledge the pointed or sharpened crayons were much more fun to draw with!
5. Crayola sells a 16 pack of crayons called Silly Scents. Which of the following in NOT a real scent?

Answer: Fart Blossom

Fart Blossom is the only one of the answers that is not a real crayon. Alien Armpit is a sour apple green. Big Foot Feet is an orange-brown. And booger buster is a lovely light yellow color. These are truly crayons made for the connoisseur!
6. Crayon colors come and go. Sometimes just the name is changed. What is the old name for the crayon that is now called peach?

Answer: flesh

The crayon now called Peach was originally called Flesh until the name was changed in the 1960s. Other notable name changes include changing Indian Red to Chestnut and Prussian Blue to Midnight Blue.
7. In 1993, Crayola came out with Pearl Brite crayons made with ground up mother-of-pearl.

Answer: False

Crayola did make Pearl Brite crayons in 1997 but they do not get their opalescence from ground up mother-of-pearl. This would increase the price dramatically and one of the great draws of Crayola crayons was that they were not expensive and could be afforded by almost everyone.
8. In the 2000 Crayola Color Census, which color crayon was selected as the favorite?

Answer: Blue

Blue came in first. In the top ten finishers, 6 were varying shades of blue. Crayola has more shades of blue than of any of the other basic colors.
9. The word "Crayola" comes from two French words that mean which of the following?

Answer: oily chalk

The word "Crayola" is derived from "craie" the French word for chalk and "ola" which means oily. The name was suggested by the wife of one of the creators of Crayola crayons. The name was deemed acceptable and a new article of Americana was born.
10. Made in 2003, the world's largest crayon was 15 ft. tall.

Answer: True

This behemoth was made for the 100th birthday party for Crayola Crayons on Oct. 11, 2003. It weighed in at over 1,500 lbs and was 16" wide. And in honor of Americas favorite color, it was blue.
