Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most people know that the date of December 21, 2012 as the end of the world or end of the modern age is derived from the Mayan calendar (the Long Count calendar), but the calendar most likely traces its origins from which earlier civilization?

Answer: Olmec

The Olmec are considered to be the first Mesoamerican civilization, and laid the foundations upon which many of the cultures to follow were based. The Olmec thrived between 1500 BCE and 400 BCE. The Mayan civilization reached its zenith during the Classic period from 250 CE to 900 CE. The Zoque developed some time after the Mayan and were conquered by the Aztec in 1494, just prior to the Spanish conquest of the New World. The Aztecs ruled central Mexico during the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. The Inca Empire came into existence in the 13th century in South America and reached its zenith in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Long Count calendar has the mythical beginning of the world happening on a date which corresponds to August 11, 3114 BCE of the Gregorian calendar. The Long Count calendar was the one widely used by the Pre-Columbian civilizations on monuments throughout Central America. It is based upon this calendar and the Pre-Columbian religions that the date of Dec. 21, 2012 has been derived for the end of the fourth world and the beginning of the fifth, although many scholars are skeptical that this is what the Mayans actually believed.
2. Which British group had a number three hit in the US in 1988 with "Armageddon It"?

Answer: Def Leppard

Def Leppard released "Armageddon It" as a single from their album "Hysteria". It was the group's fourth Top Ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album has sold 20 million copies worldwide. The title has nothing to do with end times or doomsday scenarios but rather is a play on the words "I'm a gettin' it". Legendary producer Mutt Lange produced the album and had so much input that he received a writing credit on all songs on the album.

The Ramones and Bon Jovi are both American bands; only the Stones are another British band.
3. The word Armageddon only appears in one book of the Protestant Bible; which apocalyptic book is it?

Answer: Revelation

Armageddon only appears in Rev. 16:16. The word comes from the Hebrew har meggido, which means Mount Megiddo or Mountain of Megiddo. Considering there are no mountains in the vicinity of the Old Testament city of Megiddo, mentioned ten times in the OT, but only a plain, many scholars have concluded that the language is symbolic rather than literal. Whether the New Testament language is to be taken literally or symbolically, the Battle of Armageddon has come to be known as the ultimate battle between good and evil that will usher in a new age. This common theme is found not only in traditional Christianity but also in Jehovah's Witnesses teachings, in Seventh Day Adventist teachings, in Islam, and in the Bahá'í faith.

Although the books of Isaiah and Daniel are prophetic in nature, they are not considered apocalyptic. I Thessalonians also has some passages that speak about the end times but it is not considered apocalyptic either.
4. The soundtrack for the 1998 movie "Armageddon", which featured Liv Tyler, contains the first ever Number One song on the US Billboard Hot 100 for her dad Steven's band Aerosmith. Which song was this?

Answer: I Don't Want to Miss a Thing

"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" was released as part of the soundtrack for the movie and debuted at Number One on the US Billboard Hot 100 on September 5, 1998. It remained there for four weeks. The song also became a worldwide hit. Here is a list of its chart success:

The song was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Song but did not win.

"Walk This Way" is also an Aerosmith song. "Amazed" is a song by the Country group Lonestar. "My Heart Will Go On" is a Celine Dion song from the movie "Titanic".

"Armageddon" is a disaster film about an asteroid that is on a collision course with Earth, and the team sent to stop it.
5. Which Christian offshoot believes the end times began in 1914, that only 144,000 people will go to heaven, and publishes "The Watchtower"?

Answer: Jehovah's Witnesses

Jehovah's Witnesses is a millenarian restorationist Christian denomination that came about out of the Bible Student movement led by Charles Taze Russell in the 1870s. Millenarian means they believe in the literal reign of Christ for 1000 years on the earth.

They believe that Christ will reign from heaven and the chosen 144,000 will help Him. Armageddon will usher in this time period and will be a battle between Christ and His angels and the human governments and institutions who have been corrupted by evil spirits. Restorationist means they believe the church should be returned to a purer form of Christianity more in line with how it was at the beginning.
6. The novella "Armageddon 2419 A.D." published in a 1928 issue of "Amazing Stories" introduced American readers to the swashbuckling space adventures of which archetypal hero who would go on to star in comics, on radio, on TV, and in movies for decades?

Answer: Buck Rogers

Philip Francis Nowlan wrote "Armageddon 2419 A.D." in which the protagonist was named Anthony Rogers. The novella tells the story of Rogers who accidentally entered a state of suspended animation in 1927 only to wake up in an apocalyptic future 492 years later.

A sequel, "The Airlords of Han", was released in 1929 and from there the character and setting developed into what would become the Buck Rogers franchise. The first comic strip appeared January 7, 1929 and would go on to be published using various writers/artists until 1967. It launched on radio in 1932 and first appeared on film at the 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair. Buck Rogers appeared on TV for the first time in 1950.

Flash Gordon was developed in 1934 as a direct competitor to Buck Rogers. Han Solo is from the Star Wars franchise and Lieutenant Starbuck is from the Battlestar Galactica franchise.
7. One of the most prevalent theories about how the universe will end maintains that as the universe expands it will eventually cool to a point that it can no longer support life. What is the name of this theory?

Answer: The Big Freeze

The Big Freeze or heat death is a theory under which the expansion of the universe causes the universe to cool to absolute zero and therefore no longer be able to support life. Basically the gas needed to form stars will run out and when stars stop forming only black holes will be left. But these too will eventually disappear and all work in the universe will cease resulting in the final heat death of the universe. But this will not occur for billions of years.

Other theories put forth include the Big Rip, the Big Crunch, and the Big Bounce. There is even one theory called Cosmic uncertainty which maintains that it is possible the universe will go on forever in its present state.
8. Gog and Magog both figure prominently in the apocalyptic accounts of Ezekiel and Revelation as the enemies of God and His people, particularly in the Battle of Armageddon. But which English city has for centuries had two giants by these names as protectors of the city?

Answer: London

Gog and Magog have been guardians of the City of London and a part of the Lord Mayor's Show since the days of Henry V (1413-1422). The giants have been a part of the Guildhall, the city's townhall, for hundreds of years. One legend has it Brutus defeated the giants and chained them to the gates of his palace on the site of the Guildhall. Early versions of the giants were destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. In 1708 they were replaced by wooden statues carved by Captain John Saunders. These were destroyed during the Blitz in WWII (1940) and were replaced by a pair carved by David Evans in 1953.

In Ezekiel, Gog is from Magog and is the prince of the enemies of God and His people. In Revelation, it becomes Gog and Magog rather than Gog from Magog and signifies the enemies of God and His people. In Ezekiel the names represent a geographical location but in Revelation the names merely represent all enemies of God. Either way, the names represent the ultimate enemies of God on this earth.

Only London and Birmingham are English cities, Glasgow is Scottish, and Cardiff is Welsh.
9. The Battle of Armageddon as understood within Christianity falls under which field of study within systematic theology?

Answer: Eschatology

Within Christianity, Eschatology is the study of the end times and the final destiny of man. Ecclesiology is the study of the church, including its relationship to Christ and all other ways it impacts the individual believer. Hamartiology is the study of sin. Soteriology is the study of salvation.

Although eschatological passages are found throughout the Bible, the two most important books are Ezekiel from the Old Testament and Revelation from the New. Eschatology mostly focuses on the return of Christ, the Millennium, the rapture, the great tribulation, the last judgment, the Battle of Armageddon, and the new heaven and the new earth. Not all denominations believe the same about each of these subjects and great differences can be found.
10. Armageddon is an annual sci-fi and comics convention much like Comic-Con in the US. In which country or countries does the Armageddon convention take place?

Answer: Australia and New Zealand

The Armageddon convention began in 1995 in Auckland New Zealand. From there it expanded to Australia in 1999. In 2011, it showed at Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne in Australia, and in Christchurch, Wellington, Dunedin, and Auckland in New Zealand. The convention is the largest such convention in Australia and New Zealand each year with 44,000 attending the Auckland show alone in 2010.

The convention has spread out from its sci-fi/comics roots to now include computer and video gaming, animation, and consumer electronics.
