Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What movie features a Texas sheriff named John T. Chance and his woman named Feathers? He also has three deputies, the town drunk named Borrachon, a toothless cripple named Stumpy, and a crooning cowboy named Colorado. They must all deal with a bad bunch of buckaroos.

Answer: Rio Bravo

This 1959 film by director Howard Hawks was made as a foil to the film "High Noon" (1952) which he hated. He felt Gary Cooper's potrayal of lawman Will Kane was not manly enough. So Hawks had John Wayne play a man's man lawman. The plot is that John arrests the brother of a powerful rancher for murder and must keep others from breaking the bad brother out of jail.

As Sheriff of Presidio County, Chance and his motley crew of deputies must fight a host of killers sent against them up to the final big showdown.

The other roles are played by Angie Dickinson, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, Ricky Nelson, Claude Akins, and Ward Bond. "Rio Lobo" and "El Dorado" are spinoffs of this movie. I rate this film at #20.
2. A retired sea captain comes West to be with his fiancee whose daddy owns a huge ranch. When the Eastern dude backs away from confrontations with several local bullies, his girl considers him a coward. He ends up with another woman and proves his courage at the same time. Which film is this?

Answer: The Big Country

William Wyler directed this 1958 film and Burl Ives won an Oscar for his role as a tough ranch owner who is feuding over water rights for his cattle against the powerful landowner, played by Charles Bickford, and his foreman, played by Charlton Heston. Gregory Peck plays the ex-sailor who wants to marry the landowner's daughter (Carol Baker). Jean Simmons plays the owner of the water rights that are being fought over. Peck, being rejected by Baker, teams up with Simmons to solve the controversy. Finally a range war breaks out and Bickford and Ives, after killing his no good son (Chuck Connors), are both killed. Peck gets Simmons and the water rights, and Heston gets Baker and her father's land. I rate this movie at #19.
3. A small group of Indians escapes a reservation and raids a series of ranches in Arizona, doing indiscriminate killings. An army cavalry unit, lead by an outstanding scout and a green lieutenant, is sent after the Apache band. The leader of the Apaches turns out to be a shrewd tactician and almost wipes out the army troop. What film is this?

Answer: Ulzana's Raid

This 1972 movie is overlooked as a classic. I rate it as #18. Burt Lancaster gives a superb performance as an army scout chasing the Apache Ulzana and teaching the green army lieutenant (Bruce Davidson) how to stay alive at the same time. Richard Jaeckel is brillant as the army sergeant. Most of the army company is killed and the scout mortally wounded before Ulzana ends up dead.

Some consider this film as an allegory of the Vietnam War.
4. What flick features a land baron who picks on a local elderly lawman by tricking the old man to kill in error? When the baron won't pay for a funeral, he finds out that he doesn't know who he is dealing with. A lot more people get killed before justice is done and the baron admits his mistakes.

Answer: Valdez is Coming

This overlooked 1971 flick was panned by most critics, but I like it as my #17 pick. This film is all Burt Lancaster as the aging lawman. He is magnificent as a man not to be disrespected. He is abused by a rancher he asks to pay $100 for funeral and family expenses for a man wrongly accused by the rancher of a crime.

Instead, the old man is beaten and almost killed by ranch hands. After he recovers from his injuries, he sends a note to the rancher that says "Valdez is coming.". The lawman keeps coming back and killing more and more bad guys.

In the end, the the baron tells the lawman, "I should have paid you the $100.".
5. What is the name of the film that is an obvious reference to Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn? A former Civil War general comes West to command a regiment that causes conflict with a vastly more experienced captain in that outfit. As a result, the command is virtually wiped out by the Apaches.

Answer: Fort Apache

The great John Ford directed this 1948 film that I rate as my #16 classic. Henry Fonda is Lieutenant Colonel Owen Thursday, in an unsympathetic role as a cold, uncaring commander. John Wayne is Captain Kirby York, who deserved to be appointed commander of the cavalry battalion and wants the Indians treated fairly and humanely. Thursday disagrees and constantly ignores York's advice.

As a result, York is relieved of his company command and Thursday attacks and dies with all of his troopers. York finally receives command of Fort Apache.

Some of the fine cast is Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen, Shirley Temple, John Agar, and George O'Brien.
6. A man, who is 121 years old, tells the story of his life. He witnessed the end of George Armstrong Custer and Wild Bill Hickok. He is a white man who lived with native Americans. Thus, he knows of both sides of the White Man-Red Man conflict. What movie is this?

Answer: Little Big Man

This 1970 classic, directed by Arthur Penn, starred Dustin Hoffman as Jack Crabb aka Little Big Man aka The Soda Pop Kid. As a youngster, he is captured by the Cheyenne and raised by the kindly Indian Old Lodge Skins. He eventually leaves the tribe after its massacre by the U.S. Cavalry.

He ends up back in the white man's society where he has many more adventures as a gunslinger who sees Wild Bill shot and as a skinner in Custer's Little Big Horn debacle. This film is a mixture of comedy and tragedy with a fine cast of Chief Dan George, Martin Balsam, Faye Dunaway, Richard Mulligan, and Jeff Corey. I have this film in #15 position.
7. An aging cavalry captain must take out one more patrol before retiring, in order to divert an Indian uprising. His young lieutenants are green and untested. Before he completes his mission, he must turn over command to his inexperienced officers to retire from the Army. What classic Western is this?

Answer: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

This is another great John Ford 1949 Western that I rate at #14. Captain Nathan Brittles is leaving the army due to lack of promotion, but not before getting his lovable sergeant (Victor McLaglen) into temporary trouble. One last time, he must lead a mission with his young officers (John Agar and Harry Carey Jr.) to head off Indian trouble.

He must leave his command in the field in order to retire on time. Returning to the post, he discovers he has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and Chief of Scouts.

He is also pleased to find his young officers have successfully completed the mission. Others in the cast are Joanne Dru, Ben Johnson, and George O'Brien.
8. The question is who killed the villain in this film. A lawyer from the East arrives in town to bring law to the West. He becomes involved with a rancher's gal and runs afoul of the local bad guy. The ensuing shootout is confusing and surprising. What movie is this?

Answer: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

John Ford directed this 1962 flick that I rate at #13. James Stewart is the lawyer, John Wayne is the rancher, and Lee Marvin is the outlaw. The rancher always sticks up for the lawyer when an outlaw and his gang make trouble. Finally the lawyer must have a shoot-out with Liberty Valance in the street. Amazingly, the lawyer kills the bandit and becomes a hero.

He gets the rancher's sweetheart (Vera Miles) and becomes famous, being elected Governor and U.S Senator. It turns out that the rancher shot Liberty from ambush, and not the lawyer, who was inept with firearms.

The great cast includes Edmond O'Brien, Andy Devine, Woody Strode, John Carradine, Ken Murray, Strother Martin, Lee Van Cleef, and Denver Pyle.
9. The crippled veteran steps down from a train into the dusty, dry, dirty street of a dying town. The denizens there are cold and hostile. No one has any sand in them except that which comes from the surrounding desert. A trio of local thugs make life miserable for the hero who only came to this place to do a good deed. What film is this?

Answer: Bad Day at Black Rock

This 1955 thriller, which I rate at #12, was directed by John Sturges. Spencer Tracy plays a World War II officer who has lost his left arm in battle. He comes to Black Rock to give a medal to the Japanese parents whose son died fighting for the United States.

He cannot find the parents who have been killed by Robert Ryan and his henchmen, Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin, out of racism. Dean Jagger plays the cowardly local sheriff, with Walter Brennan as the doctor and Anne Francis as the mechanic.

After great trial and tribulation, Tracy brings all the culprits to justice.
10. Jimmy Ringo rides into town and is greeted by his old friend, the marshal, who does not even wear a gun. Ringo wants to reunite with his estranged family that he has not seen for many years. A host of wannabe gunslingers challenge Ringo, who has a big reputation. The marshal urges him to get out of town but Jimmy stays too long and is killed by a bushwhacking punk. What movie is this?

Answer: The Gunfighter

Gregory Peck plays the gunfighter in this 1950 film that I rate at #11. In his efforts to see his wife and son, Ringo ends up dead, but at his grave, his wife forgives him for the past. The cast includes Millard Mitchell, Karl Malden, Richard Jaeckel, Skip Homeier, and Alan Hale Jr.
