Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
'King's Children' is a reference to Stephen King's 1977 short story "Children of the Corn", which spawned a horror film franchise of the same name. The story was set in Nebraska, which is the word clue for the Cornhuskers, being the name for the University of Nebraska's intercollegiate athletic teams. The 'US university' clue is a reference to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. 'Vanderbilt' is a reference to the 19th century US railway and shipping magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt.
The 'English county' is Cornwall, in the southwest corner (another 'corn' word) of Britain. The name is not connected to corn, but possibly to a tribe or geographical feature. Food-wise, there is the gherkin (cornichon), ice cream dessert (Cornetto, it is also an Italian pastry) and horn of plenty (cornucopia).
The next group consists of the cornet (a brass instrument similar to a trumpet), corn crake (a species of bird also known as the landrail), cornea (eye part), cornice (a horizontal decorative moulding found in buildings) and cornbraid (a hairstyle).
Finally, a couple of definitions: to corner something (trap) and corny (trite).
The wrong answers are the meat substitute (quorn), the nu metal band (Korn), poet Chukovsky (Russian children's poet Korney Chukovsky), boat maker (Quorning Boats for trimarans), research centre (CERN) and the Celtic horned god (Cernunnos)
