Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which comedic actor starred in the 1969 film "Hook, Line and Sinker"?

Answer: Jerry Lewis

Filmed in 1969, Jerry Lewis was joined by Peter Lawford and Anne Francis in the movie "Hook, Line and Sinker.

Lewis really swallows his doctor's diagnosis hook, line and sinker when he is told by his doctor, played by Peter Lawford, that he does not have long to live. Reacting to this, Lewis goes on a huge buying spree, only to later learn that he has no fatal illness and is not going to die in the immediate future. Lewis stages his own death to avoid a myriad of financial responsibilities, established when he thought his death was soon to happen. Peter Lawford and Anne Francis (playing Lewis' wife) concoct this whole story so that they can eventually "hook up". A cruel hoax, which certainly gives credence to swallowing a story "hook, line, and sinker". Perhaps second opinions were not as popular in that era.
2. What is the nickname of Jack Dempsey, an American boxer, famous for his "right hook"?

Answer: The Manassa Mauler

Jack Dempsey, born in Manassa, Colorado, was noted for his formidable right hook, a punch which is usually aimed at the chin. With his defeat of Jess Willard in 1919, Dempsey won the title of Heavyweight Boxing Champion of World. Soon afterward he was nicknamed "The Manassa Mauler". Dempsey had a fight manager, Jack "Doc" Kearns, who involved Dempsey in many other activities, including opening Jack Dempsey's Restaurant in New York City. Dempsey was inducted into Boxing's Hall of Fame in 1990.
3. From the European Bronze Age to Biblical times, of what use was a flesh-hook?

Answer: To remove meat from a pot

One of the first uses for the flesh-hook was to remove meat from a pot. The flesh-hook looks somewhat like a short spear, and along its length it can have two to five hooks hanging from it. Flesh hooks are also mentioned in the Bible, an example of which is in Exodus 27:3: "And thou shalt make its pots to take away its ashes, and its shovels, and its basins, and its flesh-hooks, and its fire pans: all the vessels thereof thou shalt make of brass".
4. Which French word, popularly used in English, is the French noun for the word "hook"?

Answer: Crochet

Watching my grandmother with her crochet hook, rapidly and most adroitly hooking
crochet thread into beautiful antimacassars, tablecloths, hats, scarves and mittens, was a wonder and a pleasure to behold. "Maille du crochet" is the French term for a crochet stitch. Because of my grandmother's creativity with a "hook", I now have an heirloom tablecloth, which I treasure.
5. Which newspaper columnist's column spread the story that prostitutes were nicknamed "hookers" because of the behavior of Major General Hooker?

Answer: Ann Landers

A reader's response to one of Anne Landers' columns helped to propagate the story that Major General Joseph Hooker (Fighting Joe Hooker), during the Civil War, supplied his troops with women to prevent them from developing venereal disease. A plethora of reader's responses correcting the story eventually dispelled General Hooker from the origin of the derisive word "hooker". Because "Fighting Joe" was not known for conformist behavior, the story was easily believed.
6. In which U.S.A. state is the town of Marcus Hook?

Answer: Pennsylvania

Nicknamed "The Cornerstone of Pennsylvania", the borough of Marcus Hook is in the southeastern section of the state. It is situated on a portion of land that protrudes into the Delaware River, which is known as a "hook of land". Marcus Hook was founded by the Swedes in 1653, becoming predominantly a Dutch town in 1655.

In 1682, William Penn's grant from Charles II included this portion of land on the Delaware. Shortly thereafter, Marcus Hook became an English settlement. Prior to Penn's grant it had also been a pirate's town, and Edward Teach (Blackbeard) was one of its visitors. During the Revolutionary War it was an encampment for the revolutionaries, and a training camp for soldiers during the War of 1812.
7. From which book are the characters Pescador, Viator, and The Scholar found?

Answer: The Compleat Angler

Sir Isaac Walton is the author of "The Compleat Angler", a contemplative tale of the art of fishing and the union of man with nature. A famous line attributed to Sir Isaac Walton is "study to be quiet". I also like a passage in Chapter V of "The Compleat Angler", when The Scholar loses a fish and says to Pescador, "Oh me! He has broke all; there's half a line and a good hook lost". Pescador replies, "For pray take notice, no man can lose what he never had".
8. In which American city was the "Hookers for Jesus" group founded?

Answer: Las Vegas

Known as "Sin City", Las Vegas is the town in which the group "Hookers for Jesus" was founded by Annie Lobert. Recovering from a heart attack induced by an unintentional overdose of cocaine, Annie, former teenage prostitute, expensive call girl, and street walker, prayed to God for help. Seeking a church that would accept a former hooker, she met Pastor Benny Perez of the Church at South Las Vegas. Accepted by the congregation there, and with the help of Pastor Perez, Annie would take a bag of Bibles, church information, and walk the strip during the late night hours.

She approached the girls working the streets, and encouraged them to start a new Christian life. Successful in this endeavor, Annie Lobert formed her "Hookers for Jesus" group.

This group has also maintained a home in the suburbs of Las Vegas for the girls to recover and start their new life.
9. In the world of music, what is a "hook"?

Answer: A repetitive phrase

Have you ever had a song repeat in your mind, without you consciously deciding to sing it? A "hook" in the musical world is a repetitive phrase, or sound, that occurs in the chorus repeatedly or having the title of the piece in the lyrics sung over and over again.

A "hook" is also referred to when one hears a song or a commercial and one can only remember one line from it. Two songs which reflect the use of "hooks" are Neil Young's hit "Heart of Gold" and Whitney Houston's hit song "I Will Always Love You". Commercial writers are schooled in the use of "hooks" for their ads. Hummmm, is there a "hook" in "I wonder where the yellow went when I brush my teeth with Pepsodent"? This is what came unbidden to my mind when I wrote about commercial "hooks".

It must be a hook, for if there are any more lines to this ad I do not know them.
10. Which British essayist is quoted as saying "Hope is such a bait, it covers any hook"?

Answer: Oliver Goldsmith

Author of "The Deserted Village", "The Vicar of Wakefield", and "She Stoops to Conquer", Oliver Goldsmith's biography seems a study of how one can be hooked by hope. Born in Ireland, Oliver Goldsmith, son of a Rector of an Anglican church, Goldsmith was fortunate to study at Oxford University.

Not a handsome man and somewhat a dilettante, he left Oxford to go to America. However the night before he left, he gambled his money away, remaining in England for a short time. Hope must spring eternal for him as for as many mistakes he made in life, there was always some one to come to his rescue.

At one point, having no money, he toured Europe as a busker playing the flute in the streets of the cities where he traveled.
