Inappropriate For Single Questions Quiz (Part 2)

Some questions just aren't workable for single question sections on Funtrivia, because the answer choices require too many characters, or questions are too specific, or take too long to figure out, etc. Here's a quiz where these questions find a home.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most of the main cast of the 1972 film "The Poseidon Adventure" appeared as guest stars on the television show "The Love Boat". Which trio below, though, never made an appearance on that show?

Answer: Jack Albertson, Arthur O'Connell, Gene Hackman

Ernest Borgnine and Shelley Winters played husband and wife Dominic and Teresa Rosselli in two 1982 episodes of "The Love Boat": Parts 1 and 2 of "The Italian Cruise". That's interesting because Stella Stevens played Borgnine's wife in "The Poseidon Adventure" whereas Winters was playing an older woman in that film.

The bombshell Ms. Stevens made three appearances as three different characters: Leonara Klopman in 1977, and Toni Cooper and Kathy Costello both in 1983. Leslie Nielsen also played three different characters: Russ Blanchard in 1977, Dan Michaels in 1978, and Hank Hardaway in 1979. Red Buttons was also a three-timer playing Uncle Cyrus Foster in 1978, Buddy Redmond in 1979, and Jimmy Morrow in 1983. Roddy McDowall played Fred Beery in one 1979 episode, while Carol Lynley played Carol Gilmore in one episode that same year. Pamela Sue Martin played Donna Dayton in a 1980 episode. And Bob Hastings was also aboard for one episode, in a 1977 episode.
2. Which of these statements about mountains is FALSE?

Answer: The world's longest mountain range is the Himalayas

Mountains are generally recognized as those peaks rising to over 900 feet, even volcanoes are considered mountains. There are mountains and even mountain ranges located under the ocean. Mountains are measured by the height above sea level but even so there are discrepancies about Mount Everest's true height located in the Himalayas, which has at least nine of the ten highest mountains in its domain. The Himalayas are not however the longest mountain range--that would be the Andes in South America, ranging 4,500 miles.
3. Which number's Roman numeral version is also the name of a New Jersey fort?

Answer: 509

Fort Dix is a United States Army post located southeast of New Jersey's capital city, Trenton. DIX is the Roman numeral express of the number 509. Those other numbers happen to express certain words as well: 600, aka DC is where The United States' capital is located; 54, aka LIV is a first name of such famous actresses as Liv Ullman and Liv Tyler; and 159, aka CLIX, is a computer language.
4. When do high tides occur?

Answer: When that part of the ocean faces the Moon

As the Moon moves relative to Earth, its gravitational pull is exerted on the oceans, and those ocean waters than rise. The Earth is also rotating though, so high tide happens when the ocean is facing the Moon. When it's not facing the Moon, it is low tide. Waves are what is created when the wind blows across the ocean. The stronger the wind the bigger the waves, which also get bigger the longer the wind travels and the more distance the wind travels.
5. The Internet company Yahoo! is a backronym for what, according to its founders?

Answer: Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle

Yahoo! was founded in 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo of Stanford University. They liked the name Yahoo! from the start because of its genesis in Jonathan Swift's story "Gulliver's Travels." The exclamation point was added after learning that the name Yahoo was trademarked by a barbecue sauce. The only difference between an acronym and a backronym is that a backronym is thought up after the fact, that is, a word that already exists is then expanded into a title or phrase by thinking up words for each letter, hopefully maintaining a semblance of pertinence to the word.
6. What role did Adolf Hitler's half-nephew William Patrick Hitler play in World War II?

Answer: Hospital corpsman in the United States Navy

Born March 12, 1911, in Liverpool, England, William was the son of Hitler's half-brother, Alois Hitler, Jr. and his Irish wife Bridget Dowling. William was sent to Germany's Weimar Republic in 1929 when he was 18, as instructed by his father, who had by then abandoned the family.

In Germany, William worked at various jobs before emigrating to the United States and blackmailing Adolf that he would reveal the truth of his Jewish heritage to the press. In the U.S. William went on a lecture tour and got approval to join the U.S. Navy as a medical specialist.

He was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart before being discharged in 1947, whereupon he changed his name to William Stuart-Houston.
7. Who is Trista Sutter in the world of celebrities?

Answer: The first "Bachelorette"

Rihanna's real name is actually Robyn Fenty. T-Pain was the first winner on "The Masked Singer" back in early 2019. In 2020, Billie Eilish became the youngest winner of not just one, but the four main categories at the Grammy Awards. Trista Rutter's maiden name is Trista Rehn, but when she appeared as the bachelorette on the first season of "The Bachelorette" in 2003, she was proposed to by Ryan Sutter and she became Trista Rutter. The two got married on December 6, 2003.
8. Up to and including the second Donald Trump presidential administration, which of these statements about U.S. Vice Presidents is the greater number?

Answer: Number of first names shared by more than one VP

There were nine first names common to more than one VP: Charles (Fairbanks, Dawes, Curtis), Daniel (Tompkins, Quayle), George (Clinton, Dallas, Bush), Henry (Wilson, Wallace), John (Adams, Calhoun, Breckinridge, Garner, Tyler), Richard (Johnson, Nixon, Cheney), Thomas (Jefferson, Hendricks, Marshall), William (King, Wheeler), and James (Sherman, Vance).
The most common first name of VPs was John and there were five of them: Adams, Calhoun, Tyler, Breckinridge, and Garner.
There is not just one surname that has been shared by VPs and different Presidents, but five: George Clinton was a VP under both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, while Bill Clinton was the 42nd President of the U.S. Johnson is the surname of three VPs (Richard Johnson, Andrew Johnson, and Lyndon Johnson) and is also the surname of the Presidents Andrew and Lyndon). Henry Wilson served as VP under Ulysses Grant and Woodrow Wilson was the 28th President. Of course, the Roosevelt surname was shared by VP Teddy and President FDR, and also of course the surname Bush was shared by George W. Bush and his father Vice President Bush serving under Reagan. So that's five.
Up to the second Trump administration, there have been 50 United States Vice Presidents, but only 46 Presidents, so there have been only four more VPs than Presidents.
9. What gas does a plant emit through the process of photosynthesis?

Answer: oxygen

Sunlight provides energy absorbed by the chlorophyll pigment, that plants use to produce their food in a process called photosynthesis. The chlorophyll makes plants green, and empowers them to absorb water from the soil and carbon dioxide from the air, making sugar--their food. During this, the plant gives off oxygen.
10. Which two movie westerns were both set post-1900, were both filmed in the Marfa, Texas area, and both came out the very same year?

Answer: "There Will Be Blood" / "No Country For Old Men"

"There Will Be Blood" was set in the early 20th century and "No Country For Old Men" had a contemporary modern western setting. Both films were released in 2007, and both were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Both filmed in the Marfa, Texas area and at around the same time, which on one occasion led to a bit of trouble when a special effects pyrotechnical test for Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" produced such a big cloud of smoke that it lingered long enough to get into the frame of a shot that was set up when the Coen Brothers were filming "No Country For Old Men." So, the latter film had to delay shooting until the cloud broke up.
