The Adventures in Authoring quest has taken me to South America and as there was no picture quiz available for the nation of Guyana, I thought I would create one! Good luck.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The South American country of Guyana has a coastline on which body of water?

Answer: Atlantic Ocean

Guyana, which has English as its official language, is one of the northernmost countries of South America. Compared to the likes of Brazil and Chile, Guyana has a relatively small coastline, stretching for just over 280 miles alongside the Atlantic Ocean.

This coastal strip is home to the large majority of the nation's population despite accounting for just a small percentage of its landmass.
2. What is the name of this river that splits the country of Guyana into two parts, east and west?

Answer: Essequibo

The Essequibo River is a north-flowing body of water that has its source in the Acarai Mountains, on the Guyanese border with Brazil. The river flows for over six hundred miles and separates Guyana into east and west; the territory to the west of the river is disputed, with neighbouring Venezuela claiming that the land between the Essequibo River and the existing, internationally recognised Venezuela-Guyana border belongs to them.

The Magdalena River - named for Mary Magdalene - is found in Colombia.
3. What is the name of the pictured Guyanese single-drop waterfall that is a popular tourist destination?

Answer: Kaietur Falls

Located in the Kaietur National Park is the impressive single-drop waterfall known as Kaietur Falls. A single-drop waterfall, as opposed to a cascading waterfall, is where the water flows over a ledge before taking a continuous fall that is only interrupted by a river or plunge pool that collects the water at the bottom. The drop associated with Kaietur Falls comes in at over 220 metres.

Angel Falls is located in neighbouring Venezuela.
4. Which heavily forested, Dutch-speaking country borders Guyana to the east?

Answer: Suriname

Bordering Guyana to the east is Suriname, a country that gained its independence from the Netherlands in 1975. Suriname is at the top of the world charts when it comes to the area of a country that is covered in forests; nearly 95% of Suriname is forested. Neighbouring Guyana is in a near second place with between 93% and 94% of the country so covered. French Guiana has higher levels of forestation (over 96%) but it is not a sovereign nation state.

Ecuador is a Spanish-speaking country in South America that does not border Guyana. Curacao is an island in the Caribbean that belongs to the Netherlands whilst Paramaribo is the capital city of Suriname.

This base map reflects a Surinamese perspective on the longstanding dispute over the ownership of the Tigri Area in the far southeastern corner of Guyana. The region - that extends to the river on the right hand side of the "disputed territory" label rather than where the black border has actually been placed - officially belongs to Guyana but is claimed by Suriname.
5. In which of the four locations highlighted on the map can the Guyanese capital city of Georgetown be found?

Answer: 2

The capital city of Georgetown can be found on the Atlantic coastline of Guyana (at the location labelled number two on this map). Much like the rest of coastal Guyana, Georgetown benefits from a degree of protection from flooding due to the existence of the Guyanese Sea Wall, a structure whose development was prompted by the Kingston Flood of 1855.

Despite the protection afforded by the Sea Wall, the city experienced another damaging flood in 2005 due to a combination of high tides and sustained heavy rainfall.
6. What is the name given to this group of mountains that can be seen from the southern Guyanese settlement of Lethem?

Answer: Kanuku Mountains

The Kanuku Mountains can be found in the southwest of Guyana, a region which is home to the small but locally important settlement of Lethem. This border town - that has its own airport with flights that depart for, and arrive from, Georgetown - has a view of the Kanuku Mountains, a geographical feature that is split into eastern and western ranges by the Rupununi River.

The Mantiqueira Mountains, as hinted at by the Portuguese name, are located in Brazil; this range is approximately sixty miles away from São Paolo.
7. What sweet-sounding river features in this picture, flowing alongside a bauxite plant in Linden, Guyana?

Answer: Demerara

The Demerara River runs through the two largest cities in Guyana, the capital Georgetown on the Atlantic coast and the industrial city of Linden which is approximately sixty miles south of the capital. Guyana has long been associated with the sugar trade, exporting a specific type of brown sugar, known as Demerara, around the world.

Another important industry in Guyana - though less so in the modern era - is the processing of bauxite (aluminium ore).
8. This five-coloured flag is the national flag of Guyana.

Answer: True

The Guyanese flag is known as the 'Golden Arrowhead' and the five colours it features represent zeal (red), mineral abundance (gold, naturally), forestry and vegetation (green), endurance (black) and water (white). This colourful, aesthetically pleasing flag showcases the technique of fimbriation or the use of lines to segment distinct areas (the triangles in the case of the 'Golden Arrowhead').

Fimbriation typically makes use of white lines but other colours are accepted in the field of vexillology, as demonstrated by the black line separating the red triangle from the rest of the Guyanese flag.
9. This unassuming structure is an international bridge that crosses the Takutu River, connecting Guyana with which country?

Answer: Brazil

This picture is taken from the Guyanese side of the river with the modest Takutu River Bridge (opened in 2009) seen on the left of the image. The other side of the bridge is Brazil; this poses a logistical challenge because in Guyana they drive on the left hand side of the road whilst in Brazil they drive on the right.

This problem is resolved by means of a crossover bridge constructed on the Guyanese side of the border.
10. Almost the entirety of the state of Guyana is situated on the northern reaches of the Amazonian Craton. What name is given to this geological region?

Answer: Guiana Shield

The Guiana Shield (spelled to account for the region encompassing Suriname and French Guiana in addition to Guyana) is the region of the Amazonian Craton bound by the red line in the image. A craton is a stable region of the Earth's lithosphere and sits exclusively on one tectonic plate, therefore avoiding fault lines.

The Amazonian Craton is one such stable geological region that can be found on the South American Plate.
