Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Two Italian islands, Sicily and Sardinia, are the largest in the Mediterranean Sea. At around a third of the size of those two, Crete is the largest of the Greek islands. It is the most southerly of the islands and lies about halfway between Malta to the west and Cyprus to the east. The second largest Greek island is Euboea which lies close enough to the mainland to have connecting bridges. It lies in the south-western part of the Aegean Sea, and is just under half the size of Crete.

Lesbos is just under half the size of Euboea; it lies in the east of the Aegean Sea about 20km from the Turkish coast. It is part of a group of islands referred to as the North Aegean islands. Unlike some island groups, they have no physical connection with each other, but all are in the same part of the Aegean Sea. Others include Lemnos, Samos and Thassos.

Just a little smaller than Lesbos, Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands; it is of a similar size to Lesbos, and it lies about 40km off the Turkish shore. Kos is about a fifth of the size of Rhodes; it lies a bit further north and a bit closer to Turkey. The Dodecanese islands are in the south-eastern part of the Aegean Sea. The name means twelve islands, but the group consists of fifteen larger islands and about a hundred and fifty smaller ones.

Kefalonia and Zakynthos are two of the Ionian islands. They lie in the Ionian Sea on the western side of Greece. Kefalonia is about half the size of Lesbos, and Zakynthos is just over half the size of Kefalonia. The group has been traditionally referred to as the Heptanese, meaning seven islands, although there are a number of smaller islands, too. The other five main ones are Kerkyra (also known as Corfu), Paxi, Lefkada, Ithaki, and Kythira.

Naxos and Santorini are two of the Cyclades which lie in the south-western part of the Aegean Sea. The name refers to the fact that they form a circle around the island of Delos, which was regarded as sacred in ancient times, and is now a World Heritage Site. Naxos is a little larger than Zakynthos, and Santorini is about a fifth of the size of Naxos.

The largest of the Sporades is Skyros; it is just under half the size of Naxos. The Sporades can be found in the north-western part of the Aegean Sea, and lie north-east of Euboea. The name derives from the same root as the word sporadic, and refers to fact that they are outside the Cyclades. There are four larger islands and some smaller ones. The other main islands are Skopelos, Alonnisos, and Skiathos.

Salamis is one of the Saronic islands which lie in the Saronic Gulf south of Athens; others include Aegina, Agistri, and Poros. Salamis is about half the size of Skyros. Hydra and its smaller neighbour Dokos are a bit further south, but are often regarded as part of the same group. Its name means water and refers to the fact that there were springs on the island. It is about a half the size of Salamis.

At the western end of the Mediterranean Sea, Formentera is one of the Balearic Islands which belong to Spain; the others are Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. Porquerolles is a small island belonging to France and it lies south of the coast between Marseilles and St. Tropez. Capri is an Italian island in the Gulf of Naples on the western side of Italy. Djerba belongs to Tunisia, and lies off the south-eastern coast; it is the largest island of north Africa.

Lying in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Gozo is part of the Maltese archipelago; Malta is the largest, Gozo lies to the northwest, and the smallest island, Comino, is between the other two. Krk is one of the largest of the Croatian islands and lies in the north-east of the Adriatic Sea. Imroz, otherwise known as Gökçeada, meaning heavenly island, belongs to Turkey; it lies close to the entrance to the Sea of Marmara.

Cyprus is an independent country at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, although Turkey claims part of the north of the island; it is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, being a little larger than both Crete, and Corsica, a French island.
