Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. World War II

The global war that lasted between 1939 and 1945 is by far the deadliest violent conflict in the history of humankind, with an estimated 70-85 million deaths from starvation, siege, disease, murder, and others. The most conservative estimates place the number of military personnel killed in this war at nearly 15 million, with a further 38 million civilian casualties.

While the true causes of the war are debated, the European theatre of the war began when the Nazi German army invaded Poland in September of 1939.

The war would end with Japan's surrender to the Allies after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
2. American Civil War

The casualties of the American Civil War are listed between 600,000 and 1,000,000 people. The secession of the Confederate States of America in order to preserve the institution of slavery is widely considered the igniting factor of the war. The Union forces would eventually win, leading to a total Confederate surrender, ending the conflict and slavery in the United States.

The Battle of Gettysburg was the war's bloodiest battle.
3. 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami

After a massive earthquake hit in the middle of the Indian Ocean in the early hours of December 26th, 2004, 100 foot Tsunami waves would crash into the surrounding shores of several countries. The then-deadliest natural disaster of the 21st century would claim an official casualty count of 227,898 people prompting a worldwide humanitarian response to support the affected communities.
4. French Reign of Terror

Following the toppling of the French monarchy, the French statesman Maximilien Robespierre (and his Jacobin club) led a series of mass trials, massacres, and executions of purported political enemies of the new regime that would later be known as the "Terror". Over 16,000 death sentences had been carried out by the time the "Terror" had ended, with a total approximate death count of 35,000-45,000 people.
5. 9/11 Terrorist attacks

On 9/11/2001, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked 4 passenger aircraft and crashed two into the Twin Towers of the World Trade center in New York City, with an additional plane being crashed into the pentagon. Through the brave actions of the passengers of the fourth plane, the hijackers were unable to reach their target and the plane was forced to crash in a field.

The death toll of the deadliest terror attack in human history up to that point was just under 3,000 people. These numbers do not take into account the hundreds of first responders and New Yorkers living in close proximity to Ground Zero that would develop cancer symptoms as a result of deadly exposure to toxins.
6. Titanic Disaster

In 1912, the luxury ship "RMC Titanic" sank after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean, while on route to New York City from the UK. Despite following legal maritime procedures for the time period, over 1500 people lost their lives in the disaster. The ship sank on its maiden voyage in the then-deadliest sinking of a single ship to that point in history.

White Star Line was the parent company that manufactured "Titanic".
7. Tenerife Airport Disaster

The then-deadliest accident in aviation history occurred in 1977 when a KLM Boeing 747 mistakenly took off without permission from the control tower after the captain misheard the instructions. Thick fog clouded the captain's visibility which lead to the airplane crashing into a Pan-Am Boeing 747.

A combined 583 people died in both planes, with only 61 survivors, all of which were in the Pan Am aircraft.
8. 2020 Beirut Port Explosion

The entire country and nearby Syria, Palestine, Israel, and Cyprus would feel the massive explosion that rocked the Middle Eastern country in 2020 following the detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that were stored in the port. 218 people would lose their lives and 300,000 others would be rendered homeless by the disaster.
9. Hindenburg Disaster

The airship caught fire on May 6, 1937, killing 35 of the 97 people on board and causing an additional fatality on the ground in New Jersey. The hydrogen airship model was very quickly abandoned and the graphic images of the large zeppelin descending on to the earth ablaze led to the end of the airship era altogether.

The airship had been in commission for 14 months, flying from March 1936 until its destruction.
10. Clutter Family Murders

Truman Capote's famous novel "In Cold Blood" details the true story of the Clutter family and their brutal murder by two ex-convicts (Perry Smith and Richard Hickock). Two of the Clutter family's four children had moved out of the family home, and their two younger high-school age children still lived there. All four of the family members were killed by the two men who were intending to rob the home and have no witnesses.
