Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to legend, Rome was founded by twins named Romulus and Remus. At first they were raised by a she wolf, but after that, who raised the twin boys?

Answer: a shepherd and his wife

Romulus and Remus are said to be the sons of the gods Rhea and Mars. There were plots against them, so their mother left them on Earth, floating down a river.
After being raised by the shepherd, they decided they didn't want to raise sheep so decided to build a city. Unfortunately, they both wanted to be king, and in the end Romulus killed Remus and became Rome's first king.
2. Romans used letters to represent numbers. What does this Roman numeral equal? DCXXIV.

Answer: 624

Roman numerals are still used today, and you've probably seen them before, although we use the Arabic number system. They are as follows:
I= 1
V= 5
X= 10
L= 50
C=100
D= 500
M= 1000
3. Which famous army general said this famous quote after a battle with Pharnaces II of Pontus: 'Veni Vidi Vici'?

Answer: Julius Caesar

He made this Latin comment meaning I came, I saw, I conquered, in 47 B.C after his battle against Pharnaces II of Pontus in Zela, Turkey. Veni, Vedi, and Vici are forms of the Latin verbs venire, vedire, and vincere.
4. During the Republic, how many seats were there in the Roman Senate?

Answer: 300

The Roman Senate had 300 seats. To be a member of the Senate, you had to be elected by the consuls. Two consuls were elected each year to serve as the leaders of the government. Once you were in the Senate, you were there for life, and you could advise the consuls or possibly get elected to be one.
5. The Ancient Romans celebrated many festivals. One of their festivals was called Lupercalia. What was this festival meant to celebrate?

Answer: love

Lupercalia was much like modern Valentine's Day. On this day, Roman youths would choose their partners by drawing names out of a hat. How well do would you think an arranged marriage like that would work out? Surprisingly, some lasted quite long. The Roman god Cupid was often associated with this day.
6. Which Roman emperor is said to have made his horse, Incitatus, a consul?

Answer: Caligula

Caligula loved his horse so much that it had servants, ate gold flakes mixed with oats, and had a luxurious stable. The name Incitatus means swift. Caligula, like Nero, might be classified as insane, or mentally disturbed.
7. What did Roman women have their rouge and lip stick made out of?

Answer: red ochre

Red ochre is a pigment made from clay. It was dug out of the ground, washed, dried in the sun, and sold as make up. Roman women also applied eye makeup made from minerals and clay. In other words, Roman women used to put a lot of dirt on their faces. For those of us who enjoy make up today, I'm sure we're glad that cosmetic production has come a long way from mud!
8. Why was the Colosseum sometimes flooded with water?

Answer: to hold gladiator sea battles for entertainment

Being the Romans, this bloodthirsty group of people were very good at coming up with ways to watch people die. Many people died in mock sea battles because most people didn't know how to swim. The Colesseum also held normal gladiator fights.
9. Which religious group was persecuted in Rome for not following the Roman religion?

Answer: Christians

Christians refused to believe in other gods so the Romans hunted them down and tortured and killed them. Crucifixion was a favored method. This ended in 313 C.E when emperor Constantine declared Christianity legal, although there still wasn't much religious freedom in Rome.
10. Which Roman goddess was the hunt, and the protector of women?

Answer: Diana

Artemis was Diana's Greek name. Diana was the daughter of Zeus and Leto. Her twin brother was Apollo. She never married, and is often portrayed wearing hunting clothes and carrying a bow and arrows.
