Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is no consensus on who invented the coffee sleeve, but one person who receives some credit is Jim Chelossi. What customer request inspired him to design a coffee sleeve?

Answer: They wanted two cups with their coffee

Chelossi ran a coffee shop in the 80s in California. Customers often asked for their hot cup of coffee to be placed inside a second cup so they could hold it without being burned. The owner began exploring other options to meet his customers' request and designed a coffee sleeve.
2. What motivated coffee shop owner Jim Chelossi to design one of the world's first coffee sleeves?

Answer: He wanted to cut costs

According to an article at "Hotshotsleeves.com", Chelossi began designing a coffee sleeve on a napkin to help reduce costs. At that time, coffee cups cost about eight cents each. The fact that many customers were requesting another cup so they could place their hot cup of coffee in it was getting expensive. So Chelossi designed a coffee sleeve that could be made for three cents each, saving him money.

He patented his invention in 1995.
3. How did coffee sleeve inventor Jim Chelossi use his new coffee sleeves to make money?

Answer: He sold advertising space on the sleeves

Chelossi decided that he could not only recover the cost of the coffee sleeves but could make money by selling advertising space on the sleeve. As the sleeve grew in popularity other coffee shops used the space it provided to promote their business, community events and partnerships with other businesses. Barry Konkin, in his article "Why Branding with Coffee Cups Works", says the coffee sleeve is effective because it "literally puts the name of your brand under the customers nose".
4. Jay Sorenson is considered an inventor of the modern coffee sleeve. After spilling hot coffee on himself while driving, he decided to come up with a solution to protect coffee drinkers. He took his invention to a coffee trade show. In what US city, known for its coffee, did he take his newly designed coffee sleeves?

Answer: Seattle, Washington

At about the same time Chelossi was working on his invention, Sorenson, a real estate agent in Portland, Oregon, was also designing a coffee sleeve. At first, he toyed with the idea of developing a new insulated coffee cup, but shipping and manufacturing costs were an obstacle, so he rejected that plan.

In 1991 he came up with his sleeve design. He sold his first case of sleeves out his car in Portland, before going to a coffee trade show in Seattle, where he sold one hundred cases in less than an hour. Seattle is known as the "Coffee Capital of America" and, with its numerous coffee roasters, houses and its vibrant coffee culture has had a global impact on the coffee industry.
5. What alliterative name did coffee sleeve inventor Jay Sorenson come up with for his invention?

Answer: Java Jacket

Sorenson called his invention a Java Jacket. He trademarked the name in 1995. His company, with the same name, started in Sorenson's garage and rapidly grew. The company sales about one billion sleeves a year and considered one of the largest suppliers in the world.
6. What coffee-selling giant took inventor Jay Sorenson's coffee sleeve and developed the "Coffee Clutch" for its customers?

Answer: Starbucks

After Sorenson patented and trademarked his creation, Starbuck's showed interest but the two sides could not come to an agreement. Starbucks built it off the inventor's idea and tweaked their coffee sleeve by using different types of cardboard. The changes got them out of any copyright infringement trouble, and they called their new sleeve the coffee clutch.
7. TRUE or FALSE. "Coffee sleeves" were thought to be first introduced around the fifteenth century in the Ottoman Empire and are called "zarfs".

Answer: True

Coffee became a popular drink in Turkey and the surrounding region. The beverage was usually served in a cup with no handles. To keep the drinker from being burned decorative holders made from metal, like gold or silver, or wood were created as a coffee cup sleeve.

It was called a zarf which comes from an Arabian word meaning "container" or "envelope". Some people still use the word to refer to modern day coffee sleeves.
8. Why do most coffee sleeves have a textured surface?

Answer: To improve grip capabilities

Most coffee sleeves are textured or have a "rough" pattern design to make it easier for the coffee drinker to hold on to the cup. With the increase of the use of "to go" cups, drinkers needed a sleeve that would not easily slip, reducing the chances of spills. To further help at limiting spillage, coffee drinkers are sometimes offered plastic lids with a raised rim and "spill sticks".

They are toothpick like plastic items with a head at one end that are inserted into the hole of a lid to prevent mishaps.
9. In what famous museum was a coffee sleeve put on display in 2005? (You can also see Van Gogh's "The Starry Night" and Warhol's "Campbell's Soup Cans" there).

Answer: Museum of Modern Art (New York City)

In 2005 the coffee sleeve was placed in the MoMA as part of its collection titled "Humble Masterpieces". Besides the coffee sleeve it featured other ubiquitous items that are part of our daily life, including Post-It notes, Bic ink pens, and Band-Aids.

It was part of a bigger display called "SAFE: Design Takes on Risk," which features over three hundred items that make our daily lives safer and less stressful.
10. What American actor, who gained fame as Derek Shepherd in the TV show "Grey's Anatomy", played the role of the inventor of a coffee sleeve, that he called a "coffee collar", in the 2008 movie "Made of Honor"?

Answer: Patrick Dempsey

The 2008 romantic comedy movie "Made of Honor" features Patrick Dempsey, as playboy Tom Bailey who invents a coffee sleeve, he calls the "coffee collar". After years of philandering, he falls in love with his geeky friend Hannah. Played by Michelle Monaghan, Hannah works at the Museum of Modern Art and becomes engaged on a trip to Europe. Tom, realizing his love for Hannah is more important than his coffee collar business, tries to stop her wedding.

The romantic comedy has many plot twists before reaching a wild ending.
