Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fondue Savoyarde was invented in the 1700s in what European nation?

Answer: Switzerland

Fondue was created out of utility, as it was eaten by Swiss villagers when they were in the middle of freezing winter and only had stale cheese in their homes to eat. Heating the cheese in a pot made it edible and far tastier and it paired well with broken pieces of bread.

It was also very popular in France, which is where the name originates and where the recipe first appeared in cookbooks, but it actually originated in Switzerland and was promoted as a Swiss National Dish in the 1930s.
2. What popular Mexican dip is generally made of avocado, onion, cilantro, tomato, garlic, and lime juice?

Answer: guacamole

Guacamole originates from Mexico and appeared as early as the 1500s when it was made by the Aztecs. A slightly different Venezuelan version of guacamole is called guasacaca and it is made with vinegar and red chili peppers, rather than lime juice, tomato, and jalapeno peppers.
3. According to fondue etiquette, if a woman is eating fondue and she drops her bread into the fondue pot, she is supposed to kiss every man at the table.

Answer: True

According to Emily Post and Martha Stewart, this is actually a quirky fondue tradition. Comparatively, if a man dropped his bread in the pot, he was then supposed to buy each person at the table a bottle of wine...Not what I would call an even trade-off.

Interestingly enough, fondue became very popular again in the 1970s when adults were having "adult parties" that centered around eating fondue together.
4. This small Turkish and Greek dish, or meze, is generally made from salted and cured cod or carp roe (fish eggs) and it can vary in color from beige to pink. What is the name of this delectable dish?

Answer: Taramosalata

Kibbeh is a dish that originates from Turkey and is generally made of bulgar, spices, and chopped meats, while fattoush is a Turkish salad made from garden vegetables and pita bread. An aioli is basically the garlic version of mayonnaise.
5. According to standard fondue etiquette rules, if someone drops TWO pieces of bread into the fondue pot, what are they required to do?

Answer: plan the next fondue party

This was a great etiquette rule to have because it not only spurred further sales of fondue equipment, but it also encouraged people to keep getting together to explore fondue together!
6. This Balkan and Middle Eastern hot and spicy pepper dip is made with lemon juice, olive oil, breadcrumbs, and walnuts. It is best eaten either on bread or paired with meat and fish kebabs. What is the name of this delicious dip/spread?

Answer: Muhammara

Garum is actually the southeast Asian translation for 'fish sauce,' which is a salted fermented fish sauce very similar in consistency to soy sauce. Tentsuyu is a Japanese dipping sauce generally used in tempura and made up of dashi, soy sauce, and mirin. Peri-peri sauce is one of my favorite sauces, and it is the African Swahili word for the 'African Bird's Eye chili' and is generally used in hot sauces and marinades used to cook fish and meat.
7. What popular Middle Eastern dip/spread consists of a mixture of tahini, smashed chickpeas, salt, lemon juice, and olive oil?

Answer: hummus

Hummus can be made with a variety of different additional ingredients for flavoring, such as roasted red bell peppers, olives, garlic, jalapeno, as well as other herbs/spices. It is a very ancient food that dates back to the 12th and 13th century and the time of Saladin, the first Ayyubid Sultan of Egypt and Syria.
8. Many dishes that derive from the Middle East, India, and Eastern Europe are served with a mellow sauce made from yogurt to cut the heat of the spices in the food. Which of the following dips is NOT made with yogurt as the base?

Answer: Bagna cauda

Cacik is a yogurt dish that comes from Turkey and is made of yogurt, salt, olive oil, garlic, cucumber, dill, mint, sumac, and lime juice; cacik is similar to, but much thicker than, tzatziki. Tzatziki comes from Greece and it is usually made with cucumbers, yogurt, salt, garlic, olive oil, pepper, and sometimes either dill, mint, parsley, or lemon juice. Raita is an Indian sauce that is made with yogurt, coriander, cumin, mint, cayenne pepper, and other various herbs and spices. Bagna cauda is a regional Italian vegetable dip that is made of garlic, anchovies, oil, butter, and/or cream.
9. This bright red and versatile hot and spicy "Rooster Sauce" from Thailand goes well on pretty much everything, especially due to the wonderful combination of whole chilies, salt, vinegar, sugar, garlic, and water. What is the name of this spicy hot sauce?

Answer: Sriracha

Dou ban sauce is an Asian sauce used in Szechuan foods and is made from chili and soybean paste, while guilin sauce is made of chili, garlic, and fermented soybeans. Texas Pete is a popular Louisiana-style hot sauce that has been in production since 1929. Sriracha originates from Thailand and is generally used as a condiment for the traditional Vietnamese dish pho.
10. It is customary to double dip in a fondue pot and to eat with the fondue fork.

Answer: False

As per most eating situations, double dipping can lead to spreading germs and spit to the other people you were sharing the fondue pot with. It is also not recommended to touch the fondue fork to your mouth because it can be very hot, it can damage your teeth, it spreads germs, and it is an extremely long fork to try and eat with!

If you are eating cheese fondue you can pry off the bread with your fingers, and meat fondue should always be removed and put on a plate before eating.
