Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the name of the band formed by Chazz (Brendan Fraser), Rex (Steve Buscemi), and Pip (Adam Sandler) in the 1994 movie 'Airheads'?

Answer: The Lone Rangers

They play heavy metal and hard rock. Early in the movie they break in to a radio station where the play their demo named, "Degenerated". The station plays rock usually and it's name is KPPX. Eventually they get a chance to play on MTV. The film was a critical and commercial flop at the time, although it's now been elevated to the status of "cult film".
2. At the beginning of 1985's "Back To the Future," we see Marty McFly's punk-rock band auditioning for a gig at their high school. What is this band's name?

Answer: The Pinheads

Marty (Michael J. Fox) states the band's name just before ripping into a heavy version of the movie's theme song: Huey Lewis and the News's "The Power Of Love". The geeky-looking man with the bullhorn who rejects The Pinheads almost immediately is, of course, played by Huey Lewis himself. They are told they "are just too darn loud". The other members of the band are Paul, Lee and Bobby.
3. And while we're on the subject of Michael J. Fox, in 1987's "Light Of Day," Fox portrays a young man in a band with his sister played by Joan Jett. What is this band called?

Answer: The Barbusters

Fiction bled over into reality a bit when The Barbusters' version of the Bruce Springsteen-written "Light Of Day" was released as a single and hit the charts. When Joan Jett and the Blackhearts play in concerts they frequently are asked to play this song. The song is on "The Light of Day" album. The Barbusters were on the video played on MTV, along with many scenes from the movie.
4. Michael J. Fox isn't the only "Family Ties" cast member to star in a movie about a band - Justine Bateman starred as the leader of an all-female band in a 1988 comedy-drama, "Satisfaction." What was this band's name?

Answer: The Mystery

And yes, the rumors are true -- that IS Julia Roberts playing second fiddle to 'Mallory' from "Family Ties." Funny how times change. The movie was also called "Girls of Summer." Justine Bateman plays Jenny Lee. She is in an all-girl band from Baltimore that is managed by Martin Falcon (Liam Neeson).
5. In 1989's "The Big Picture," aspiring film director Nick Chapman (Kevin Bacon) directs a bizarre but inventive video featuring a band led by his friend Lydia (Jennifer Jason Leigh). What is this band called?

Answer: PEZ People

"The Big Picture" was directed by Christopher Guest. It was also the debut of Teri Hatcher. The film is a satire of the Hollywood movie industry. The song in their video was, "The Whites of Their Eyes". The PEZ People were all actors playing musicians. The song was sung by Michael McKean.
6. In 1984's "Streets of Fire," Diane Lane plays Ellen Aim, a rock and roll superstar. What's the name of the band that ably backs her (dubbed-in) power vocals?

Answer: The Attackers

We see posters on walls throughout the movie advertising "Ellen Aim and The Attackers." Diane Lanes' vocals were performed by Fire Inc. (Laurie Sargent and Holly Sherwood). Ellen was kidnapped by Raven Shaddock, who was played by Willem Dafoe and the rest of his biker gang called, The Bombers. One of the songs the band plays in the movie was, "Nowhere Fast".
7. In the 2010 romantic action comedy film, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World", we see 22-year old bass player Scott Pilgrim dating 17-year-old high-school student, Knives Chau, much to the dismay of the band. What was the name of the band?

Answer: Sex Bob-Omb

The band is a garage rock band from the Toronto indie scene. Real musical bands such as Beck and Metric played in parts of the battle of the band sessions. Michael Cera plays Scott Pilgrim and Nega Scott. The Battle of the Bands is sponsored by fictitious record executive Gideon Graves. Back in high school, Scott Pilgrim and Kim Pine started out in a band called Sonic and Knuckles.

Answer: Oneders

The Oneders are informed by their manager (Tom Hanks) that they get to keep their 'Cap'n Geech' costumes. The movie is set in the 1960s rock and roll culture. They practice in Jimmy Mattingly II's garage. It was Jimmy's girlfriend Faye Dolan, because she was inspired by The Beatles, that she feels the band should be named "The Oneders." They win an opportunity to earn some real money by playing at the local pizza parlor, Villapiano's.
9. In the 1980 American musical comedy "The Blues Brothers," Jake and Elwood Blues set out to track down every member of their former band. They find five of them playing at a Chicago Holiday Inn's Armada Room. What was the new group's name?

It doesn't take much persuasion from Jake and Elwood to get the MagicTones to pack in their hotel bar act and re-assemble the Blues Brothers Band. When Jake (Joliet) goes to prison in the 1970s the original Blues Brother's Band falls apart.

The Holiday Inn's address was 3801 Mannheim Road near the O'Hare Airport. It has now been replaced by a Quality Inn. The hotel was southeast from the airport.
