Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Answer: "Let the magic begin"

Get your broom out, it's time for the sorcery (and the magic) to begin! The first instalment of the "Harry Potter movies" was released in 2001. It was directed by the suspiciously named Chris Columbus and introduces us to eleven-year-old Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe. Harry is an orphan who discovers he's actually a famous wizard.

After a whole big thing involving excessive junk mail, he's promptly whisked away to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There he becomes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, learns magic, plays the suicidal sport of Quidditch, and eventually realizes that something nasty might just be lurking beneath all the cozy wizarding-school fun.
2. A Beautiful Mind

Answer: "He saw the world in a way no one could have imagined"

"A Beautiful Mind" stars Russell Crowe as John Nash and was directed by Ron Howard. Nash is a brilliant but socially awkward mathematician - aren't they all? - whose work eventually earns him a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. The catch here is that Nash also develops schizophrenia, and much of the movie plays out without us understanding quite what's real and what exists only in his beautiful mind. We watch Nash progress from his days as a young Princeton student through his career, marriage to Alicia Nash, and his long struggle to regain control of his life.

As is often the case with biopics, numerous liberties were taken with the real story of Nash (particularly about his illness), but that didn't stop it from winning Best Picture at the 74th Academy Awards.
3. Shrek

Answer: "The greatest fairy tale never told"

For those times when you're feeling less handsome and princely and just want to be left alone in peace, there's "Shrek". It's an animated fairy-tale comedy from DreamWorks that introduced us all to the grumpy ogre voiced by Mike Myers who, like most of us, just wants to be left alone in his swamp.

Unfortunately, the fairy-tale creatures have been dumped on his property by the obnoxious Lord Farquaad, so Shrek sets off with a snarky donkey, voiced by Eddie Murphy, to get his swamp back. "Shrek" became such a hit that it helped turn DreamWorks Animation into a serious competitor in animated films, and it became the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Shrek was never the hero we deserved, but he was definitely the hero we needed in 2001.
4. Ocean's Eleven

Answer: "They're having so much fun it's Illegal"

If you want to see eleven people team up to rob three Las Vegas casinos, have I got the movie for you. Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Eleven" hit theaters in 2001, featuring George Clooney as Danny Ocean, a recently released thief who immediately starts assembling a ridiculously talented crew to pull off an even more ridiculous heist. Their target is the vault beneath three Las Vegas casinos owned by ruthless casino mogul Terry Benedict, played by Andy Garcia. If you like big names, there's also Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Don Cheadle, and more.

The movie was actually a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film starring Frank Sinatra, but Soderbergh put his own spin on the movie, making it slicker and more suspenseful. You can decide if it's better. It became a major box-office draw, making more than $450 million worldwide.
5. Mulholland Drive

Answer: "A love story in the City of Dreams"

It's a David Lynch film, so "Mulholland Drive" isn't really the sort of movie where you can quick check your texts and expect anything to make sense when you look back up. The movie takes you on a very strange trip through Los Angeles, although not quite "Eraserhead"-strange. Instead, it's a neo-noir mystery starring Naomi Watts as Betty Elms, an aspiring actress who arrives in Hollywood and discovers an amnesiac woman hiding in her aunt's apartment after a car accident. Just another day in David Lynch's world.

Lynch originally developed the project as a television pilot but reworked it into a feature film after that fell through. The picture was received a lot of interest and earned Lynch the Best Director award at Cannes.
6. Moulin Rouge!

Answer: "Truth - Beauty - Freedom - Love"

Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge!" stars Ewan McGregor as Christian, a broke young writer who finds himself in the glittering and scandalous world of the Moulin Rouge cabaret. Because we need a plot, he becomes smitten with Satine, the club's dazzling star (Nicole Kidman).

The movie is basically a jukebox musical fever dream, with songs like "Roxanne," "Your Song," and "Like a Virgin" hammered to fit into the story alongside an original score by Craig Armstrong. Kidman and McGregor did a good amount of their own singing, and both received Golden Globe nominations, with Kidman winning Best Actress.

The film also earned eight Oscar nominations and won two (production design and costume design).
7. Legally Blonde

Answer: "Boldly going where no blonde has gone."

"Legally Blonde" stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a cheerful, fashion-obsessed sorority president living her best life. Then her boyfriend, Warner, dumps her because he doesn't think she's serious enough for his political ambitions. I know, right?

So of course, Elle responds to this as anyone would. She gets herself into Harvard Law School, where she has to deal with snobbery from classmates, professors, and Warner himself. The movie was directed by Robert Luketic and became a surprisingly big hit, earning more than $140 million worldwide on a pretty modest budget.
8. Monsters, Inc.

Answer: "We Scare Because We Care"

Okay, get your flashlight out. We're gonna take a look at the monsters under the bed. They have jobs, ya know. Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." takes us there... well, to Monstropolis to be exact, where monsters make their living scaring children because human screams are used to power the city. John Goodman voices Sulley, a giant blue furry monster who is the company's top Scarer. Billy Crystal plays his one-eyed best friend and assistant, Mike Wazowski. Then a little human girl wanders through a door into the monster world, which I guess is like finding a moose sitting on your couch with a beer.

The movie was directed by Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich, and David Silverman, and it became a huge hit, earning nearly $580 million worldwide. If you're looking for weird trivia, and I know that you are, it's worth noting that it was also Pixar's first film to feature a human child as a major character.
9. Black Hawk Down

Answer: "Leave no man behind."

Ridley Scott directed 2001's "Black Hawk Down", which dramatizes the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. That's when U.S. forces attempted to capture two senior lieutenants of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid and ended up fighting their way through the city after two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down. Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana, Tom Sizemore, and William Fichtner lead a huge cast, with a very young Tom Hardy and Orlando Bloom also saying hi along the way.

The film was criticized by some for historical inaccuracies and for giving relatively little attention to the Somali perspective, but the technical filmmaking was lauded, particularly the editing, cinematography, and sound. The movie picked up four Oscar nominations, winning two for Film Editing and Sound. It also made about $173 million worldwide against a $92 million budget.
10. Donnie Darko

Answer: "Life is one long insane trip. Some people just have better directions."

If David Lynch is too pedestrian for you, 2001 has you covered. This one's directed by Richard Kelly. It stars a young Jake Gyllenhaal as Donnie Darko, a troubled (and troubling) high-school student, who meets a creepy possibly human person in a bunny suit named Frank. Frank comes to Donnie one night and tells him that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. The next morning, Donnie wakes up at a golf course and learns that a jet engine has crashed into his bedroom, and nobody seems to know where it came from. Bunny Man Frank may have saved Donnie's life, but why?

The movie starts to get weird after that.
