Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

While the book "Deathly Hallows" went into more detail concerning Snape's memories, viewers of the movie were at least finally able to see several short scenes that explained why many aspects of Harry's life had played out the way they did. Snape had just been murdered, and Lord Voldemort issued an ultimatum that either Harry should give himself up or everyone who fought with him would die. Taking the time to go into Professor Dumbledore's office to view Snape's memories, however, provided Harry with some important insight and information as to how to handle the situation he was about to face.

Petunia hated magic. The first memory viewed was of two sisters, Petunia and Lily. Lily had just conjured up a flower, and Petunia was outraged, calling her a freak and threatening to tell their parents. Throughout the movies it was obvious that Aunt Petunia hated Harry, and this scene explained why. She was jealous of her sister's magical ability. More information concerning this jealousy was revealed in the book. Petunia apparently wrote Professor Dumbledore a letter asking if she could attend Hogwarts along with her sister; he turned her down gently, but she never got over it.

A young Severus befriended Lily, saving her from Petunia's harshness. The two of them were childhood friends. He came from the same town as the two sisters, but lived in a poor area. He told Lily that he had a very unhappy home life, as his parents seemed to argue a lot. He was also able, however, to tell Lilly more about being a witch and going to Hogwarts because his mother was a witch. The two friends hoped to be sorted into the same class, but the Sorting Hat placed Lily in Gryffindor House, while Severus was placed in Slytherin.

Snape hated James. Lily and Severus remained friends for a time, with Lily choosing to spend time with him instead of her rather rambunctious Gryffindor house mates, James and Sirius. Viewers of the movie series already learned in "Order of the Phoenix" that James bullied Severus and made his time at school miserable, and this was reinforced further by Snape's memories in the Pensieve. As Lily and Severus grew up they began to see things differently, especially as Voldemort rose to power and Snape became a Death Eater; during an argument Snape called her a Mudblood, and that was pretty much the end of their friendship as far as Lily was concerned. From that time on she was more drawn to James, who apparently had matured. When Harry came to Hogwarts, Snape was overwhelmed by his physical resemblance to his father, in spite of having Lily's green eyes; over time, however, he came to realize that Harry also possessed Lily's kind nature. Even so, the two appeared to have a rather antagonistic relationship.

Snape found Lily dead after Voldemort murdered her. He was in agony, terribly guilt-ridden, because he had overheard part of Professor Trelawney's prophecy and relayed it to Voldemort, who thought it described Harry. Afterwards Severus asked Dumbledore to protect Lily and her family, and made some sort of deal with him (according to the movie scene), but the Potters unfortunately placed their trust in the wrong person, shown to be Peter Pettigrew, who betrayed them.

Snape always loved Lily. In a discussion regarding Harry's future, he revealed to Dumbledore that he cared about Harry, which was a bit of a surprise considering their antagonistic relationship. The reason he cared for Harry, however, was because he always loved Lily.

The love Snape felt for Lily was also manifested by his Patronus, a doe, which had also been Lily's Patronus. Death Eaters were rarely able to produce a corporeal Patronus due to their association with evil, and it is unknown if that was true with Snape before Lily's death; his profound feelings of love for Lily led to his Patronus mirroring hers. This discovery helped Harry to understand that it was Snape who had led him to the Sword of Gryffindor while he and Hermione were in the Forest of Dean, which was desperately needed to destroy the Slytherin Locket.

Snape was a double agent. He had promised to help Dumbledore in exchange for his protection of Lily's son. He was posing as a Death Eater while being a very active agent for the Order of the Phoenix. No one was aware of this arrangement except for the two people involved in the agreement; while some members of the Order of the Phoenix didn't trust Snape at all, others trusted him because Dumbledore did. Wow! And to think that I strongly disliked him through all the movies up to this point. Snape played his role very convincingly. During the conversation regarding the plan for Dumbledore's death, it became apparent to astute viewers that Snape was acting as a double agent. Why else would it be important to Dumbledore that Voldemort trust Snape? The epilogue also reinforced this idea, as Harry told his son, Albus Severus, that he was named for one of the bravest men he had ever known.

Dumbledore was poisoned by ring, which he kept a secret from everyone except for Severus. After finding the Horcrux, he tried it on, hoping to be able to make contact with his dead family. Like all the Horcruxes, however, the ring was cursed. That is why Dumbledore's hand was blackened in "Half-Blood Prince". Severus was quite an accomplished healer, and he contained the poison the best he could, but he warned Dumbledore that he only had about a year to live.

Dumbledore, therefore, planned his own death. He knew that Voldemort had chosen Draco Malfoy to be his murderer, but he did not want to damage Draco's soul in that way. He made Snape agree that when the time came, he would be the one to commit the murder, arguing that it would help him to gain more trust from Voldemort if he was the one who completed the act. So, when Harry witnessed Dumbledore's death in "Half-Blood Prince", Snape appeared to be the villain, while in fact, he was following Dumbledore's plan.

Dumbledore believed that Harry must die, and had apparently been thinking about it for quite some time. He told Severus that on the night Harry's parents had been killed, the Avada Kedavra curse that killed Lily had bounced off her and attached a piece of Voldemort's soul to Harry. Harry did not seem at all surprised by this revelation; in fact, he acted as if he had known it for quite some time. Why else could he speak Parseltongue and know what Voldemort was thinking? The vision was just a confirmation of what must be done, and Harry accepted that with courage and honor.

The incorrect choices are all true statements, but the events described were not a part of Severus Snape's memories that were revealed to Harry at the end of "Deathly Hallows 2". Harry freed Dobby in "Chamber of Secrets", Luna was at Malfoy Manor and Voldemort found the Elder Wand in "Deathly Hallows 1". Goyle made a spell for Fiendfyre (in the book it was Crabbe) and Nagini was found to be a Horcrux in "Deathly Hallows 2".
