Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mac invites Peripetchikoff, Borodenko and Mishkin from the Russian Trade Commission to his office. What is the purpose of this meeting?

Answer: to discuss setting up bottling plants in Russia

Mac thinks that if he can secure a deal with the Russians, he'll get the Head of European Operations job in London. He discusses setting up six bottling plants in Russia, but wants Coca-Cola to provide the syrup, and the Russians to do the bottling. The Russians want Coca-Cola to supply the formula, and they will make the syrup themselves. Mac refuses and the Russians say, "No formula, no deal".

After Mac says no deal then, they confer and agree to the deal in principle. As they're leaving, Peripetchikoff tells Mac they have an emergency meeting with the Swiss trade delegation. "They send us twenty carloads of cheese. Totally unacceptable, full of holes". Shortly after the Russians leave, Mac gets a call from Mr. Hazeltine, his boss in Atlanta, who tells him they're not interested in doing business behind the Iron Curtain.
2. Mac's wife and kids have to cancel their trip to Venice because Scarlett Hazeltine, the daughter of Mac's boss, will be staying with them a short while. Why does Mr. Hazeltine send Scarlett to Europe?

Answer: to break up her engagement

Scarlett, who has already been to Rome and Paris, fell in love with a pimple-faced basketball player, according to her father. When she arrives in West Berlin, she tells Mac and Phyllis that her father sent her to Europe to break up her and Choo Choo Babcock.

They met in a phone booth when 43 people piled in to break a record. They were on the bottom, and by the time they came out, they were engaged. Scarlett, who's only seventeen, says she's been engaged four times.
3. Scarlett's two-week visit turns into two months, and one morning she shows up at Mac's office with a new husband. Why doesn't Mac like Scarlett's husband?

Answer: he's a communist

One morning, Mac's wife calls to tell him that Scarlett isn't at the house and her bed hasn't been slept in. Mac's driver, Fritz, tells him that he's been dropping Scarlett off at the border with East Berlin every night. Just after a frantic Mac finds out that Mr. Hazeltine and his wife are arriving in West Berlin the next day, Scarlett shows up and tells Mac that she married an East German named Otto Piffl. Mac fears for his job if the Hazeltines find out that Scarlett has married a communist. When Scarlett brings Otto in to Mac's office, Mac and Otto take an instant dislike to one another.
4. After spending a little time with them, Mac decides to give Scarlett and Otto a wedding gift. What does he give them?

Answer: cuckoo clock

Scarlett and Otto are planning to leave on the train for Moscow that night, so Mac needs to stop them. He has a cuckoo clock, given to him by his staff, which plays "Yankee Doodle Dandy" while a small Uncle Sam comes out each hour. Knowing Otto is going back to East Berlin, Mac gives the clock to them as a wedding gift, being careful to wrap it in "The Wall Street Journal". To be sure to get the attention of the police in East Berlin, Mac has Schlemmer attach a balloon to the exhaust of Otto's motorcycle.

The balloon used to say "Yankee Go Home", but now reads "Russki Go Home".
5. After Mac successfully schemes to get Otto arrested, why does he have to arrange to get Otto out of jail?

Answer: Mac finds out Scarlett is pregnant.

The East German police, noticing the balloon on Otto's exhaust, pull him over and arrest him for smuggling American propaganda after finding the cuckoo clock and the "Wall Street Journal". Meanwhile, Mac arrives home to tell a waiting Scarlett that Otto won't be picking her up because he's been arrested.

When Scarlett hears this, she faints. Phyllis calls for Dr. Bauer, who determines that Scarlett is "schwanger", but can't think of the translation. Mac and Phyllis' son says he knows what it means but they told him not to say words like that.

Their daughter then tells them Scarlett is going to have puppies. Mac tries to think of a lie to tell the Hazeltines about Scarlett's husband, but Phyllis is so angry at him for orchestrating Otto's arrest that he decides the best thing to do is get Otto back.
6. Mac asks the Russians to help him get Otto out of jail.

Answer: True

The Russians had taken a liking to Mac's secretary, Ingeborg, when they saw her at his office. Mac calls on her and Schlemmer to help with his plan to get Otto out of jail. Crossing into East Berlin, Mac tells the policeman that he works for Coca-Cola.

When the man asks if Mac has proof, Mac holds up a six pack and says, "Will this do?". The policeman says he's confiscating the proof and Mac says, "Fair enough. Just return the empties". Fritz drives Mac, Ingeborg and Schlemmer to the Grand Hotel Potemkin, where the Russians are staying. Mac tells them Otto stole his cuckoo clock, and if the Russians don't get him out of jail, the Coca-Cola deal is off.

He also agrees to let them have Ingeborg go to work for them.
7. While Otto is being interrogated by the East German police, what song do they make him listen to over and over?

Answer: Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

The East Germans are keeping Otto awake, and making him listen to "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" over and over, to get him to admit that he's an American spy. He finally cracks and says he's a spy so they'll leave him alone. Shortly after, the Russians arrive to pick up Otto.

They hesitate momentarily when they find out Otto just confessed to being a spy, but figure that if Moscow finds out, they can cross the border into West Berlin.
8. When Mac is attempting to leave East Berlin, why does the East German policeman tell him to wait?

Answer: So he can return empty Coca-Cola bottles.

While the Russians are inside the jail getting Otto, Schlemmer changes into Ingeborg's dress. As soon as Mac has Otto, he says he'll send Ingeborg over. Fritz, Mac, Otto and a hidden Ingeborg drive off. The faux Ingeborg starts across the street, tripping on "her" shoe halfway across.

The Russians rush to help "her", but realize that they've been bamboozled by Mac. They give chase, but Mac makes it to the border first. The policeman sees Mac and tells him to wait. Just after he comes out with the empty Coke bottles, the Russians drive up in their out-of-control car and crash into the Brandenburg Gate.
9. Mac has three hours to make Otto presentable to his new in-laws. One thing he does is have Otto adopted by a moneyless, aristocratic washroom attendant. What title does Otto receive?

Answer: Count

Scarlett arrives at Mac's office later that morning and wakes Otto up. Mac realizes he has three hours to turn Otto into a capitalist before the Hazeltines arrive. He begins barking orders to Schlemmer and Ingeborg, and soon has his office filled with manicurists, barbers, jewelers, tailors, his lawyer and even an MP doing a Cagney imitation.

He has Schlemmer send for that moth-eaten count, Count von Droste Schattenburg, who Schlemmer finds working in the men's room at the Kapinsky Hotel. The Count doesn't accept Mac's initial offer of 2,000 marks, but they eventually agree on 4,000 in exchange for the Count adopting Otto. For a little extra, the Count throws in the family crest (a porcupine on a field of fleur-de-lis) and a picture of the Schattenburg Castle. Otto isn't too happy about being adopted without being asked, but Scarlett is thrilled at being a Countess and having everyone curtsy to her.
10. Mr. Hazeltine is so happy about his daughter's marriage that he gives Mac the job in London as Head of European Operations.

Answer: False

As part of his renovation of Otto, Mac makes him manager of the bottling plant. Otto initially resists Mac and Scarlett's efforts, but eventually rises to the challenge of being a capitalist when he meets his new father-in-law. Mr. Hazeltine is so impressed with Otto when he meets him, that he gives Otto the London job. Thinking he's doing Mac a favor, Mr. Hazeltine decides to send him to the home office in Atlanta as Vice President of Procurement.

Although Mac feels it's a demotion, Phyllis is happy because she was leaving for the States with the kids anyway. Phyllis and the kids take a vote (it's two out of three) and agree to go with Mac to Atlanta.
