Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is *NOT* one of the scary persons/things that threaten Slip and Sach in "The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters" (1954)?

Answer: a Frankensteinian monster made of body parts

Slip and Sach are invited to Gravesend Manor to negotiate the lease of a vacant lot in the Bowery for neighbourhood kids to use to play baseball. Grissom, the butler, drinks a potion which turns him into a monster. Francesca Gravesend thinks she is a vampire but this may be a morbid delusion. Derek Gravesend wants to transplant a human brain to his gorilla Cosmos and Anton Gravesend wants to transplant a human brain into his robot Gorog.

There is no Frankenstein-style creature assembled entirely from spare parts.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Return of the Creature

In "The Return of Dracula" (1958), a vampire leaves his home in the Balkans and appears in the U.S. using an adopted false identity. In "Return of the Fly" (1959), Philippe Delambre, the son of Andre Delambre, the original fly, remakes his father's mistake. In "Godzilla Raids Again" (1955), a new Godzilla, accompanied by another giant monster named Anguirus, heads for Osaka.

There was an episode of the animated television programme "Monster Force" (1994) titled "Return of the Creature from the Black Lagoon". There was a progrock album by Keith Stone called "The Return of the Creature from Outer Bass" released in 2020. There was an episode of the comedy sketch programme "Mister Show with Bob and David" in 1997 called "The Return of the Curse of the Creature's Ghost". There does not appear to have been a 1950s feature film called "Return of the Creature".
3. What sort of monster is "The She-Creature" (1957)?

Answer: a prehistoric humanoid sea organism

The evil Dr. Lombardi places Andrea Talbott, played by the Elizabeth Taylor look-alike Marla English, under deep hypnosis. He "regresses" her to a 17th century lifetime through whom he calls a primordial sea monster into being. The monster murders at his command.

The monster's costume was constructed and worn in every scene of Paul Blaisdell, who nicknamed the horrid-looking beast "Cuddles". Blaisdell almost made the ultimate monster-maker's sacrifice. Director Edward L. Cahn ordered him to wade into the sea up to his waist.

The costume filled with water and the surf tipped him over. Film critic Leonard Maltin called the costume "one of Paul Blaisdell's more memorable monsters".
4. Better known as Napoleon Solo on the American television series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (1964-68), who played the Symbol Maker's Teenage Son in "Teenage Cave Man" (1958)?

Answer: Robert Vaughn

Actor Robert Vaughn was perhaps a bit old to play a teenager. The film did not go well for him. He cut his foot by stepping on broken glass during the filming which took him off the shooting schedule for several days. There was a scene in which Vaughn's character shoots a deer with a bow and arrow.

The scent of its blood attracts a pack of wild dogs which steal his deer and attack him. During filming, one of the dogs bit Vaughn and he was transported off the location for medical treatment. According to the Internet Movie Database, the actor said that "Teenage Cave Man" was the worst movie ever made.
5. Who made and wore the costume for the mutant in "Day the World Ended" (1955)?

Answer: Paul Blaisdell

Special effects creator and monster maker Paul Blaisdell made the costume for the mutant in "Day the World Ended". He crafted a rubber suit, claws which he purchased in a costume shop, and toenails carved from white pine. Blaisdell made the costume to fit his own diminutive height. The wearer had limited visibility which made some of the actions required difficult to execute.
6. John Carpenter remade "The Thing From Another World" (1951) and called it "The Thing" (1982).

Answer: True

Howard Hawks' adaptation of the novella "Who Goes There?" was loose. John Carpenter's 1982 film, "The Thing", was much more faithful to Don A. Stuart / John W. Campbell's original story. The setting was changed; the monster was changed. The sequel was not well received critically but grew on home DVD audiences and now is a sort of cult film.
7. What interrupts the plans of Dr. Harrison and Professor Nordstrom to employ Tobor as a space pilot in the movie "Tobor the Great" (1954)?

Answer: a Communist-spy plot to steal the robot

Communist spies infiltrate a confidential press briefing introducing Tobor. They resolve to steal the robot. Their plan to break into the Nordstroms' home is thwarted by a photo-electric alarm system and loudspeakers blaring the battle-scene soundtrack from "Sands of Iwo Jima" (1949).

The Communist gang then kidnaps Gadge and his grandfather. Tobor responds to a telepathic distress call, frees the hostages, captures the spies, and returns to his preparation for spaceflight.
8. For what is Ted Cooper best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Ted Cooper (1917-1994) was born William Harold Thompson in Alabama. He appeared in "Enter Arsene Lupin" (1944), had a small part in "Outlaw Women" (1952), and another in "Wild Horse Ambush" (1952). He had the lead in "Phantom from Space" (1953), followed by small parts in "The Caine Mutiny" (1954) and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954).
9. There is a small-town feeling to the area in which "I Married a Monster from Outer Space" (1958) occurs. Where is this motion picture set?

Answer: Norrisville, California

Norrisville is a fictional location in California. According to a 2011 review in Million Monkey Theatre by Nathan Decker and Pam Burda, Norrisville, California is "just west of Neptune, east of Knots Landing, north of Fairvale, and just south of Sunnydale".

This is not particularly helpful in that three of those four Southern California locations are also fictional. Exteriors for the motion picture were shot at Malibou Lake and Lake Sherwood, both California locations in the Santa Monica Mountains.

The exterior of Marge and Bill's home was shot at 4946 Melrose Hill Street in Los Angeles, which house also appears in the motion picture "Halloween H20" (1998).
10. What is Doctor Laird's principal concern when Brigadier Cartwright brings a new computer expert to replace the injured one in "The Strange World of Planet X" (UK title) "Cosmic Monsters" (USA title) (1957)?

Answer: The new one is a woman.

When an accident in Dr. Laird's laboratory injures one of his laboratory assistants, Singers, an expert in computers, the Ministry of Defence sends down Brigadier Cartwright to investigate. He brings with him a replacement computer expert, Michele Dupont.

When Dr. Laird is informed that the newest member of his team is a woman, he responds, "But a... woman? This is preposterous. This is highly skilled work!" Dupont goes on to solve a major power-usage problem but Laird remains unconverted in his misogynism.
