Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How were the iconic sand-pit scenes in "Invaders From Mars" (1953) filmed?

Answer: a vacuum sucked sand through a huge funnel

The sandy area atop the hill was constructed over a large canvas with a slit cut in it. This was covered with sand. A large funnel was fitted under the hole in the canvas, attached to a powerful vacuum machine. When the sandpit was opening, the vacuum was applied and the sand went down the hole.

Then the camera was mounted upside down (around the lens' axis) and the negative was printed reversed to show the sandpit appearing to close up.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Alien Women of Rarotonga

"Captive Women" (1952) is set in 3000 AD in post-apocalyptic New York City. "Mesa of Lost Women" (1953) takes place in the "Muerto Desert" of Mexico. "Untamed Women" (1952) occurs on an uncharted island during World War II.

Rarotonga is a volcanic island, the largest of the Cook Islands. While there was never a motion picture named "Alien Women of Rarotonga", several movies have been made there: "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" (1983), "The Other Side of Heaven" (2001), and "Johnny Lingo" (1969). The U.S. television programme "Survivor XIII: Cook Islands" (2006) was filmed on one of the islands there.
3. How were the monsters in "Attack of the Giant Leeches" (1959) killed?

Answer: dynamite detonated in the swamp water

Early in the film, Lem Sawyer, played by George Cisar, shoots one of the leeches five times to no effect. Later, Doctor Greyson, played by Tyler McVey, wants to explode dynamite in the swamp to bring up the bodies of the dead and to kill the leeches. Game warden Steve Benton, played by Ken Clark, objects because the blast would kill the other animals living in the swamp.

He finally relents and helps the doctor and some state troopers to set up their charges. The explosion kills one giant leech, the other having been killed when Steve stabbed it underwater.

As the people walk away from the bayou, the sucking-gurgling sound of a surviving giant leach can be heard.
4. Perhaps better known for his leading role as Joe Mannix on the CBS television programme "Mannix" (1967-1975), who played Ted Bronson, the jungle guide, in "Voodoo Woman" (1957)?

Answer: Mike Connors

American actor Mike Connors (1925-2017) was of Armenian descent; he was named Krekor Ohanian at birth. He played private eye Joe Mannix for which he earned one Golden Globe and six Emmy nominations. Connors' roles in horror and science fiction films included "Day the World Ended" (1955), "Swamp Women" (1956), "Voodoo Woman" (1957), and "Nightkill" (1980). Chuck Connors played Lucas McCain on ABC-TV's "The Rifleman" (1958-1963). Carroll O'Connor played Archie Bunker on CBS-TV's "All in the Family" (1971-1979). Bill Murray played television weatherman Phil Connors in the motion picture "Groundhog Day" (1993).
5. Who composed the musical score for "The Neanderthal Man" (1953)?

Answer: Albert Glasser

Albert Glasser (1916-1998) distinguished himself by composing, directing and arranging musical scores for a large number of undistinguished motion pictures of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Of his roughly 200 film scores, quite a few are horror or science fiction films: "Invasion U.S.A." (1952), "The Neanderthal Man" (1953), "Monster from Green Hell" (1957), "Beginning of the End" (1957), "Viking Women and the Sea Serpent" (1957), "The Cyclops" (1957), "The Amazing Colossal Man" (1957), "War of the Colossal Beast" (1958), "Giant from the Unknown" (1958), "Teenage Cave Man (1958)" and "Earth vs. the Spider" (1958).

His best-known television theme was probably "The Cisco Kid" (1950-1956).
6. In a generally attenuated fashion, what was the literary source of "The Revenge of Frankenstein" (1958)?

Answer: a novel by Mary Shelley

All movies with some connection to Frankenstein descend from the 1818 novel "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley. Beginning with the 1931 Universal Pictures version, there have been innumerable remakes, sequels, and variations on the theme. Hammer Films' "The Curse of Frankenstein" (1957) was that studio's first attempt to enter the genre.

It was so successful that they followed with "The Revenge of Frankenstein" a year later, using the mythos derived from Shelley's original work.
7. What is the name of the place where the dissidents from Killer Kane's dictatorship in "Planet Outlaws" (1953) live and hide?

Answer: The Hidden City

Buck Rogers and Buddy Wade join the resistance to Killer Kane's despotic rule. The resistance is centered in the Hidden City. The civilian leader of Hidden City is the scientist Dr. Huer and the military leader is Air Marshal Kragg. Spaceships enter and leave the city through gigantic sliding doors of solid rock which look like part of a mountain.
8. For what is Barboura Morris best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Barboura Morris (1932-1975) began her motion picture acting career in 1957 when Roger Corman gave her the lead in his B-picture "Sorority Girls". She had more major roles, e.g. opposite Charles Bronson in "Machine-Gun Kelly" (1958) and opposite Peter Fonda in "The Trip" (1967).

The horror and science fiction pictures in which Morris appeared include "The Viking Women and the Sea Serpent" (1957), "Teenage Caveman" (1958), "A Bucket of Blood" (1959), "The Wasp Woman" (1959), "X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes" (1963), "The Haunted Palace" (1963), "De Sade" (1969), and "The Dunwich Horror" (1970).

She and director Roger Corman had a romantic episode during the filming of "A Bucket of Blood".
9. Where is the motion picture "The Vampire" (1957) set?

Answer: San Francisco, California

In the film, Dr. Paul Beecher is identified as a San Francisco physician. His colleague Dr. Campbell's residence is in a nearby neighbourhood of San Francisco. Interiors were shot at the Hal Roach Studios in Los Angeles. The exterior of the police station in the movie was shot on the 10300 block of Woodbine Avenue in Culver City, California.

In other exterior shots, street signs for Mentone Avenue and Woodbine Street are readable; these are locations in the Palms neighbourhood of West Los Angeles.

The U.S. premiere of the motion picture, consistent with the fictional location, was San Francisco on 14 June 1957.
10. "It was a dark and stormy night." What happened to Bill Farrell on the night before his wedding to Marge in "I Married a Monster from Outer Space" (1958)?

Answer: He was abducted and duplicated by an alien.

Bill Farrell's male friends take him out to a bar in Norrisville for a bachelor party. Bill leaves early to check on his fiancée Marge. As he drives to her home, he brakes hard to avoid running over a body lying in the road. This is a trap. As he gets out of his car, the body disappears.

A scraggly three-clawed glowing arm touches his shoulder. The glowing monster to whom it is attached frightens him sufficiently that he faints. A cloud of moving black smoke envelopes him and he disappears. He reappears (or, at least, his body appears) the next morning, late for the wedding.
