Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what part(s) of "The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll" (1957) is either Doctor Jekyll or Mister Hyde visible on screen?

Answer: none

It might have been a challenge to make a "Jekyll and Hyde" movie without either character appearing on screen, but that is what was accomplished in "The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll." The premise is that Dr. Jekyll has died (like he did in the novel and in both the 1931 and 1941 motion pictures).

He has left behind a daughter, Janet Smith, who is about to come into his estate upon reaching her majority. Not only is there no "Hydian" monster in the film but the monster is a werewolf, instead.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: The Invisible Creature

Invisibility is a popular and recurrent theme in horror and science fiction films and in comedies such as "Blithe Spirit" (1945; 2020) and "The Canterville Ghost" (1944; 1996). "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" (1951) is very loosely based on the 1897 H.G. Wells novel.

In "The Invisible Boy" (1957), Robbie the Robot turns a boy named Timmie invisible. In "Invisible Invaders" (1959), producers used the monster costume from "It! The Terror from Beyond Space" (1958) in those scenes where the invisible monster becomes momentarily visible at its time of death.

There does not appear to have been a 1950s movie called "The Invisible Creature."
3. The character Chani in "Devil Girl from Mars" (1954) is similar to which character in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951)?

Answer: Gort

Chani is the bodyguard robot which accompanies Nyah on her trip from Mars to Earth. Gort is the bodyguard robot which accompanies Klaatu, played by Michael Rennie, on his visit to Earth. Chani looks a bit like a very tall 1950s refrigerator with arms. Chani is equipped with a ray gun which issues a beam which disintegrates people and things.
4. Which actor played the local newspaper publisher, Martin Cochrane, in "The Monolith Monsters" (1957)?

Answer: Les Tremayne

When fragments of the meteorite are recovered by Federal geologist Ben Gilbert, he examines them with Martin Cochrane, the editor/publisher of the San Angelo newspaper. Martin was played by Les Tremayne, many of whose roles were as a narrator due to his fluid and memorable voice. At the end of the film, he is reminded of his statement that the nearby salt flats were "Mother Nature's worst mistake." Had those salt flats not been where they were, the water from the dam could not have produced the salt water which ultimately stopped the monolith monsters.
5. In "The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake" (1959), there is much discussion of "tsantsas." What is the meaning of "tsantsa"?

Answer: shrunken heads

Human heads are shrunken and preserved, particularly by the Jivaroan peoples of Ecuador and Peru, including the Shuar, Achuar, Huambisa and Aguaruna tribes. The skull is removed and the skin of the head is preserved which causes it to reduce in size. In the Shuar language, these shrunken heads are called "tsantsas." This may be transliterated as "tzantza." Tsantsas figure significantly in "The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake" because the curse placed upon the Drake family men is a Jivaroan curse and their heads are removed and shrunken after they are killed by it.
6. In what country was the 1956 motion picture "1984" made?

Answer: United Kingdom

The movie was shot in English in the U.K. by Holiday Film Productions Ltd. This was particularly appropriate because the novel on which it was based was set in London, the capital of Airstrip One, which was a province of Oceania. Holiday Film Productions appears to have produced no other films and ought not be confused with Holiday Pictures Ltd. of Vancouver, Canada.
7. In "Gog" (1954), what is the name of the computer which operates the entire underground space-research facility?

Answer: NOVAC

The research facility in Gog is run by the Nuclear Operated Variable Automatic Computer (NOVAC). MANIAC is the computer used in Ivan Tors' "The Magnetic Monster" (1953). The business computer seen in the movie "Desk Set" (1957) was EMERAC. In Kurt Vonnegut's "Player Piano" (1952) the computer which runs the entire U.S. economy is called EPICAC.
8. For what is Curt Siodmak best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: script-writing

Curt Siodmak (1902-2000) was a German-born American screenwriter who escaped Nazi Germany and wrote an impressive number of horror and science fiction movie scripts. He moved from England to Hollywood in 1937 and made his mark in "The Wolf Man" (1941) with Lon Chaney, Jr.

He will be forever remembered for the poetic lines "Even a man who is pure in heart / And says his prayers by night / May become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms / And the autumn moon is bright." His other notable films include "The Invisible Man Returns" (1940), "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" (1943), "I Walked with a Zombie" (1943), "Son of Dracula"(1943), "House of Frankenstein" (1945), "Bride of the Gorilla" (1951), "The Magnetic Monster" (1953), "Riders to the Stars" (1954), "Creature with the Atom Brain" (1955), "Curucu, Beast of the Amazon" (1956), and "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" (1956).
9. Where is the motion picture "Terror in the Haunted House" (also known as "My World Dies Screaming") (1958) set?

Answer: rural Florida

Sheila Wayne Tierney receives psychiatric treatment in Switzerland before moving with her new husband Philip to a mansion in rural Florida. The place is cared for by Jonah Snell but he has not been fully occupied by this job for seventeen years. This is the house about which Sheila has had nightmares.
10. From what planet does Exeter come to Earth seeking assistance in "This Island Earth" (1955)?

Answer: Metaluna

Exeter's planet, Metaluna, is under constant attack by his people's rivals the Zahgonians. This enemy is bombarding Metaluna with flaming meteors guided by Zahgon's warships. A protective shield shelters Metaluna but requires huge amounts of atomic energy to maintain and the Metalunans are running out of uranium.
