Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What happens to Slim and Tubby in the ending of "Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1953)?

Answer: The English cops turn into monsters and chase them.

At the end of "Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," Slim brings Tubby into the police station while he is still in the form of Mr. Hyde. Tubby bites the inspector and four police officers. Tubby reverts to his human form but, when he looks at the five bitten law enforcement officers, they have turned into monsters, as result of his bite. Slim and Tubby flee the police station and the film ends.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: The House of Grisly Death

"House of Wax" (1953) wasn't a house in the residential sense but rather an exhibition of wax figures. The "House on Haunted Hill" (1959) was a rented mansion in which guests were required to spend the night to earn $10,000. In "Terror in the Haunted House" (1958), the house is an ancestral mansion in rural Florida.

There does not appear to be a motion picture called "The House of Grisly Death."
3. How is the monster in "The Snow Creature" killed?

Answer: He is shot to death.

Once in Los Angeles, the yeti escapes captivity and is pursued through the sewers under the city. The police assist Dr. Parrish's efforts to recapture the monster. Five men throw a net over him. He reaches through the net to choke one of the men. Another shoots him once and then shoots him three more times, fatally.
4. Which actor played the part of Captain Nemo in the 1954 version of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"?

Answer: James Mason

The English actor James Mason (1909-1984) enjoyed immense success and a long career. He starred in films such as "A Star Is Born" (1954), "North by Northwest" (1959), "Lolita" (1962), "Heaven Can Wait" (1978), "Georgy Girl" (1966), and "The Boys from Brazil" (1978). To fans of horror and science fiction, he is especially remembered as Richard Straker, the vampire's servant, in "Salem's Lot" (1979).
5. In "The Amazing Colossal Man" (1957), how does Major Eric Coulter, one of the attending physicians, die?

Answer: impaled with a giant hypodermic needle

Dr. Paul Lindstrom and Dr. Eric Coulter initially treat Lt. Col. Manning for the burns he received in the detonation of the plutonium bomb. Then they try to treat him for his uncontrolled growth. In the culminating scene of the picture, they take an enormous syringe and stick it in the Colossal Man's ankle (which is as far up as they can reach). Manning pulls it out and stabs Dr. Coulter with it, killing him instantly.
6. Was the 2005 movie "House of Wax" a true remake of or sequel to the 1953 motion picture "House of Wax"?

Answer: Neither; it was unrelated save in its name.

The original "House of Wax" was made in 1933; the classic remake was made in 1953. Another film named "House of Wax" was made in 2005 as a sort of slasher movie, but was similar to the 1933 and 1953 versions in name only. The remake centers in a nearly-ghost town, the only public attraction in which is a wax museum. Paris Hilton stars as Paige Edwards.

She won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress, and the Teen Choice Award for Best Scream Scene Of The Year. Hilton was also nominated for the MTV Movie Award for Best Scared Performance but did not win.
7. In "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" (1951), whose photograph is referred to as that of the inventor of the invisibility serum, Dr. John "Jack" Griffin?

Answer: Claude Rains

As a sort of "homage" to actor Claude Rains, the picture of Dr. John "Jack" Griffin is actually a photograph of the English actor. Rains played the lead in the first Universal Pictures entry into the field: "The Invisible Man" (1933). Rains was little seen in that picture, although his voice was often heard, because he was invisible!
8. For what is Richard Carlson best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Richard Carlson (1912-1977) played handsome leading roles in a wide variety of motion pictures. His character in "The Magnetic Monster" was his first part in a horror and science fiction film. Then followed "It Came from Outer Space" (1953), "The Maze" (1953), "Riders to the Stars" (1954), and "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954).

He had many television roles, e.g. in "Thriller" and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." He also starred in the TV series "I Led 3 Lives" (1953-1956).
9. Where is "Pharaoh's Curse" (1957) set?

Answer: Egypt

The opening credits of "Pharaoh's Curse" are shown over a stone tablet on which Egyptian hieroglyphics are written which then dissolves into a map of Egypt over which the British flag is flying. A riot breaks out in Cairo in 1902 jeopardizing a British archaeological expedition in the Valley of the Kings. A small British army detachment is sent to retrieve the scientists who are searching for the lost tomb of Rahateb. All of this was shot in California's Death Valley National Park which doubled for the Egyptian desert.
10. What happens to the Bat at the end of "The Curse of the Aztec Mummy" (1957)?

Answer: thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes

Right when it appears that the evil Dr. Krupp (the Bat) will prevail, the Aztec mummy Popoca comes out of Xochitl's tomb, bursts into the secret laboratory of Dr. Krupp, and kills all of his henchpersons. He then tosses the screaming Dr. Krupp into a deep hole filled with venomous snakes.
