King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) was leading his men to fight against the mighty Persian army led by Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) at the Battle of Thermopylae. At the narrow path of Thermopylae, the Spartans held off the Persians for three days. Leonidas and his men fought to the last man until they were eventually wiped out by a barrage of arrows.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto (So Yamamura) spoke this line at the end of the film. He knew that although Japan had achieved a military victory, his country would not be able to prevail against the industrial might of the U.S in a protracted war.
