In the original "Short Circuit", Ben was one of the original builders of NOVA's robots, including Johnny Five. After he leaves NOVA, he designs tiny robots that resemble the ones he was building at NOVA except these ones are tiny. He calls one of them "Number Five" because it was meant to resemble the most famous robot that NOVA made, except his version was tiny.

The tiny Number Five robot wanders away from Ben's stand and ends up in Sandy's office. Sandy works at a toy store. When she finds the robot, she searches for the maker. When she finds Ben, she orders 1,000 of them. Ben does not have 1,000 tiny robots just yet, so they agree on a deadline for him to have them ready for her.

After overhearing the transaction between Ben and Sandy, a con artist named Fred offers to help Ben obtain the money he needs to make 1,000 robots. Ben and Fred become business partners. Fred gets the money they need from the loan shark and they hire some workers and take their business into an abandoned warehouse. What they don't know is that there are two bank robbers who are secretly using that building as a starting point where they can dig a hole and tunnel their way into a ban across the street to steal some jewels.

The first time the thieves enter the building after it's no longer abandoned, they attack Ben and Fred, destroy the merchandise, and all the workers quit as a result.

Answer: Stephanie and Newton

Stephanie and Newton were the most important human characters in the original "Short Circuit". Many fans were disappointed when they did not appear in "Short Circuit 2". Stephanie's voice is heard when Ben is reading the letter that came with the package (although Ally Sheedy wasn't listed in the credits for doing that voiceover) and aside from that, Stephanie and Newton are only mentioned in the second movie. It is revealed that they are Ben's friends. Newton and Ben were partners at NOVA in the original "Short Circuit". Stephanie definitely did not consider Ben to be her friend in the original movie (Ben made some rude comments to her). After Newton and Ben left NOVA, they remained friends and Stephanie became friends with Ben.

Ben sent a letter to them asking for money to fund his new business so he can complete the 1,000 robots before the deadline that he and Sandy had. Instead of sending him money, they send him Johnny Five. The letter explains that Johnny Five could help them more than any amount of money could. Despite the hardships that Johnny Five goes through during the movie, they are proven to be right.

Johnny Five was sent to Ben to help him build the 1,000 toy robots that he needed to build. Johnny Five starts doing that, but then he overhears Fred say the word "city". When Johnny Five learns that he is in a city (he'd lived on a farm and never been in a city before) he leaves the building to explore it. Most people are not nice to him just because he is a robot.

Oscar works at the bank across the street from the warehouse where the main characters work. When Johnny Five explores the city, Oscar is the only person that seems to be friendly to him. What Johnny Five does not know at first is that Oscar is the leader of the bank robbers and the other two thieves (who Johnny Five had previously defeated when they invaded the warehouse) are his employees. Oscar makes his employees lock Ben and Fred in a freezer in a Chinese restaurant while he tricks Johnny Five into building a tunnel under the warehouse that leads to the bank vault.

When Johnny Five sees the jewels, he is enraged. Then, things get even worse. Oscar leads Johnny Five into the street and his employees come there (having already locked up Ben and Fred). Oscar speaks in Pig Latin to get them to sneak up behind Johnny Five. Johnny Five does not understand Pig Latin so he does not know what is going on.

While Johnny Five asks Oscar what he said to his employees, they attack Johnny Five from behind and severely damage him.

Answer: By using songs as hints

When Ben and Sandy go on a date, Ben learns a lot of her favorite songs. When they are captured by Oscar's employees, they call Sandy on her cell phone. Sandy calls a taxi and gets the taxi to take her to where they are being held captive. Ben uses these songs as directions for how to get to where they are being held captive.

She understands most of the directions perfectly and when she gets to one song she doesn't recognize, the taxi drive recognizes it. So, this plan is successful and Sandy gets there and sets them free.

Because the tunnel to the bank vault is started in Ben and Fred's workplace and because Sandy is working with them, the police conclude that they are the bank robbers. They intend to arrest all three of them, but Fred gets away. Fred finds a badly-beaten Johnny Five in an alley. Fred breaks into a Radio Shack and partially repairs Johnny Five.

After Fred partially repairs Johnny Five, they track down Oscar and his employees. Meanwhile, the police release Ben and Sandy, who then convince them to find Johnny Five. Fred and Johnny Five capture Oscar's employees and then the police arrest them. Oscar almost gets away on a boat, but then Johnny Five finds a crane and he uses it to swing over to the boat and capture Oscar, and then the police arrest him.

After all this, the badly damaged Johnny Five lies on the ground and seems to die. Ben revives him with a defibrillator.

Johnny Five and Ben are seen taking The Oath of Allegiance to become citizens of the U.S. When Johnny Five is asked how it feels to be the first robotic citizen, he jumps and says, "I feel alive!" That's how the movie ends.
